    3. Marilyn, There was a large settlement in Jones County, where the notes say the group came from CT. Were the Tounsley's part of this migration. I may have read about it in the History of Jones County, Georgia. The settlement was in Clinton from memory. 3. Brenda First I had better correct one thing I said, (I) "Did see a Holley cemetery near Dooley county border, but that isn't close to < 5TH District >Houston County." That cemetery is in Houston County, but not near Ft Valley. I have checked to see if there were Thomas marriages in Crawford county for them, but didn't see any. I would definitely check to see if they married in Bibb County, as many people were married in Bibb County from FT Valley as opposed to Perry. You would find those marriages in Washington Memorial library and while you were there, I would ask for help looking at local newspapers, because that is so sad and the newspapers would often cover those sad stories. If Nanny wasn't from Houston County, they may have married in her home county. They may have other marriage books in the Washington Memorial library. Since Benjamin married Neoma in Jan 1900, there isn't much chance of finding Nanny on a census, as an adult. Next see if you can find out which church they attended. You might be able to find Nanny on a church role. 1895 from memory was a very depressed time in Houston County, and they may have only had a wooden marker. Any other descendants of this family on the list that could assist? 3. I am researching the TOUNSLEY family of Perry, Houston County. I have quite a bit of information on this line but have few details on JOB TOUNSLEY, the first person of this family to come to GA who eventually settled in Houston County, early late 1790s/early 1800s. JOB TOUSLEY (without the "N") was from Salisbury, CT and served in the Revolutionary War; I have lots of information on this period of his life. I don't know why his name became TOUNSLEY. Job TOUNSLEY appears on the 1790 York County, SC census. He must have moved there about 1788/89, then moved into GA to help drive the Indians westard into what became Alabama. He is on the 1800 GA census. Michele Heiderer

    3. Some Holley families resided along Lake Joy Road (Tharpe's Mill Road) during the mid to late 1800's, a few miles North of Perry. Many of their descendants still live in that area. But, I'm not aware of any Holley family cemeteries. It's usually a good idea to trace all known property that the family had, and then try to find any hint of a cemetery on it. This may entail reviewing the deeds, tax digests, estate records, arial tax maps, soil survey maps, and old plats. Land records are some of the most interesting records that you can research. They give you a real "lay of the land" perspective of your ancestors' environment and way of life. At least half of all people who were buried in this area prior to 1900, lie in unmarked graves. This is not to say that they weren't marked in some fashion after the burial. Most had wooden markers or large rocks placed on the graves. However, time and construction [destruction] have taken their toll on many of these markers. Many families in Houston Co., GA were tenant farmers during the 1800s. A large statue will be dedicated to these tenant farmers on Friday, 3 Oct. 2003 at the Fairgrounds in Perry, GA. Former President Jimmy Carter will be present to help in this dedication. King and his slaves/ descendants - from South Carolina and Georgia. He came to Houston County in Feb. 1850. He left much family behind. Have at least 2 letters written to him in Houston County from a cousin in South Carolina. There are also Felders and Henrys in this family line as well as several children of african descent.
