Hello It is interesting to see Frederick Slappey in Edgefield District, SC c 1800, and later he is in the Houston County area. It just shows how many of Houston County settlers came from Edgefield District - Orangeburgh District SC. I am almost positive he is the one I was looking for. I now need to find him in the 1830 census records with three male children under ten years of age. Probably in Ga. but not in Houston Co. Thanks
this is excellent, to see how the counties morphed over the years. I am not sure this is the same family. According to Addie Howell's "Cemeteries and Obituaries of Houston County, Georgia" pg 202, Minerva Knight died 15 Oct 1895 at her home in Hawkinsville and she was born in Wilkinson County, Ga. She was the widow of James A. Knight. She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Perry, Ga I am not sure this is the same person and nothing is mentioned about Native American Heritage. It wouldn't have been widely discussed in that era. There are photos are some names listed by Billy Mills on the Houston County, Georgia Web page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahousto/evgcm.htm Best of Luck Gaila

Have you looked in the marriage records for Houston Co. ? One side of my family from Houston co. is of Cherokee descent, but there are records of them as they came to Houston county in the 1820's so there should be records for your family as well. You may also want to check the Chapman roll of Cherokee who were still in GA. in the 1850's. Argus Week of November 4, 1890 TOM WOOLFOLK HUNG He dies protesting his innocence to the last Tom Woolfolk, the wholesale murderer of Bibb County, was hung at Perry, Georgia, last Wednesday. The story of the Woolfolk murder is known throughout our country to be one of the most brutal and bloodiest tragedies ever committed in the annals of Georgias history From the time of his arrest to the moment of his execution he claimed that he was an innocent man. Whether he was innocent or not he and his Maker only knows, but the general opinion of all who heard of the testimony in the case is that he was surely guilty. On the day before his execution he made the following statement which was read on the scaffold just before the drop fell: I, Thomas G. Woolfolk, realizing the existence of an infinite, wise and holy God, so as to meet Him, knowing all that I have ever done, and fully understanding that I must stand before the judgment bar of God, and that today , in a few hours, I shall be called into His presence, do solemnly declare my innocence, and I leave as my last declaration that I did not take the life of my father, or any member of his family, or have any knowledge of the person or persons who did the murderous deed. At midnight of Tuesday, October 25th, Mr. Wiley Leverett died at his home in the Upper fifth district of Houston county. The interment was in the home cemetery Wednesday. He was born in Dekalb county January 18th, 1821 therefore lacking only 8 months of being 84 years of age. He moved to Houston county in 1851, and for 36 years he had lived on the place where he died. He was a man of strong convictions, energetic, a good friend and neighbor, an excellent citizen. Public spirited, charitable, kind and true, his friends were all those who knew him well. He was married three times and the father of eighteen children. He is survived by his last wife, nine sons and four daughters. A truly good man, as he saw and understook the right, has been called to his eternal reward. He was one of the best-known men in Houston Co. For a year or more, he was in declining health, confined to his bed for two weeks or more prior to his death. The friends of the bereaved wife, sons, daughters and grandchildren extend their sincere sympathy. Additional Comments: I am searching for the parents/siblings of Wiley Leverett. Barbara Grizzle shared these photos of her Crawford County Busbee ancestors with us. She believes one man to be Allen Busbee, son of William Reese Busbee, of Bibb County but we aren't 100% sure of some of the people in the photos. If you know any of the pictures in the photo ( maybe you have a matching picture), please share that information. And this is a reminder to everyone when you take photos, write down the names and even relationships of people in them and ask your oldies to help before they aren't able to. What a great family get together idea. Have lunch and after washing up, play name that person with old family photos. Best regards, Gaila
