    1. [GAHOUSTO] Mr. Mills pages
    2. Crilley
    3. I have just loaded onto the Houston County pages two pages which contain most of what Mr. Mills has been sending to the List. The one page is all of the Eyewitness Accounts. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahousto/mills2.htm The other is a group of his Research Tips. I have indexed them at the top, so you can quickly go to them. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahousto/mills.htm Gaila will be creating a LINK from the front Houston County page, so you can easily get to these....but I just wanted to pass this along to you. I hope this will make it easier for all of you to reference his materials.... Virginia

    3. Wally, If I had an email address for you, I would have responded to you personally. >> Does Anyone know where Market Snellgrove Sledge may be buried? I couldn't find her. << Do you know what her middle name was? "Margaret M. Sledge" was an inmate of the State Sanitorium, under committment. This probably meant she was at Milledgeville, GA, and could possibly be buried there. Info concerning her is listed in my 1871-1900 Administrators & Guardians Bond Abstracts. Take care! William A. If I can find Margaret Snellgrove Sledge grave she may be buried next to her husband, then I would know which Sledge she married. But with my luck since the youngest child in the family was born in 1839 her husband may have died in another county and she moved to Houston County to be with her father. 1. [GAHOUSTO] Houston Co., GA: Guardians Bond Abstracts 1865-1870. Intro.

    3. Houston County Researchers: When I have a book which is currently in print, I almost never post portions of it *anywhere*. However, in this case, I am making an exception, even though I still have a few dozen of this particular book left. The time period between 1865 and 1870 is one of the most difficult to trace, for those seeking the names of an orphan's parents. And since the Civil War was just ending in 1865, and this country was going thru the Reconstruction Period up into the 1870s, America was basically in a transitional period. You would be amazed at the number of widows and orphans who made an exodus out West, usually heading to Texas and various points in between. Therefore, I am going to post the 1865 to 1870 Guardians Bonds from Book "A", pages 110 thru 154. This information is part of a book entitled: HOUSTON COUNTY, GEORGIA, ADMINISTRATORS & GUARDIANS BOND ABSTRACTS 1852-1870: By William A. Mills. Copyright 1998. I will post it in 2 separate posts. Take care & happy hunting! ___________________________ William A. That file is now quite impressive and I have found it invaluable in my research, not only of my Houston County connections, but with researching family lines in any county. The principles of research that Mr. Mills has shared with us can be used for all our research. Thank you again, Billy, for all you have done and are still doing for genealogy researchers. 3. Janet, Yes I have a description of every tombstone that was there when I took my survey of this 12-acre cemetery in Fall and Winter 1996. Here is what I have about Martha Summerford's tombstone: 5 foot tall, upright stone monument with curtains draped on the top and sides. Marker is in #2 condition (Good). There is only this marker on the gravesite, and no slab of any type. However, there is a small unmarked footstone. This is the only marked grave in plot # R-26. There is a possibility of other graves, and maybe room for more future burials. There is no coping, fencing or borders around the plot. Survey taken: 12 November 1996 by William A. Mills. If I had included all of this type of data in the Evergreen Cemetery book, the size of the book would have been 2 or 3 times the size it was. The Taylor Foundation was not used to funding individual cemetery projects, so I didn't push my luck with them by asking for the additional $1500 to include this data. The primary reason that I compiled the Evergreen Cemetery book, was to make it easier for researchers to find the graves. I don't know how many times I spent *hours* just trying to find one grave. Now, with the plat and info in the book, I can find any of those graves within about 10 minutes or less. For those of you who plan to make a visit to Evergreen Cemetery, I recommend that you obtain a survey plat that I have drawn of it. You can get one by photo-copying the one in the Evergreen Cemetery book at: 1. The Perry, Warner Robins or Centerville Public Libraries. 2. Perry City Hall. 3. Houston County, GA Probate Court. 4. Washington Memorial Library; Macon, GA. Take care! William A. 1. Re: [GAHOUSTO] Email deluge.
    2. Mr. Mills, I took a cousin from California to the Evergreen Cemetery in march of this year to show her the graves of the family I had married into. We walked around the Cemetery for hours and got up close to some of the markers. My cousin was near a marker that caught both of our eyes because we knew under the pollution of years that there was a beautiful picture. It was the gates to heaven with the a sun beam and a cross . We had to look closely, but it sure was worth it. I also took a tour around the crypt of the SWIFT family that is caved in. If not for your stories on this beautiful Cemetery I probably would have just kept to the Leverett Family Cemetery that my husband and I caretake of. I would recommend those in and out of the area to take a day and tour by walking rather than driving this Cemetery. Stephanie Langston

    3. Stephanie, I'm glad that the Houston-L list is helpful to you for your genealogical research. Addie Howell, Helen Hudson and many others, are always willing to volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow genealogists. >> If not for this page and your book on the Cemetery I would have probably never gone there and seen that beautiful place where some of the family is buried. << Evergreen Cemetery certainly is a unique and beautiful place. For those of you who have never visited the cemetery, by all means, take the time to do so if you are ever in the vicinity. The place has a charm, all of its own. While I was transcribing the data from all of the tombstones at Evergreen Cemetery, I also took just as much time to record a very detailed description of the stones, along with the condition that they were in during late 1996. I took several photographs of the especially beautiful and unique older ones. Take care! William A.
