Valerie & Carolyn: Do either of you know who "Nola" was ? Was checking the 1900 census reports and came across a whole boatload of family living next door to each other. Lucious Bell with a bunch of his children.....course, his son John, married Frances "Fannie" Hammond (dau. Boswell & Nancy Miller Hammond), my uncle Joe Thompson (he married Fannie's sister, Mary Cansis Hammond (dau of Boswell & Nancy), some of my Ashley kin, one of whom married into the Hammond family, Nancy Gordon, Smith, Brigman, Miller, Knopp and in the midst of all this was : Asa J. Smith, with wife Nola: Note the differences in ages. He is 61 / she is 29. 223/223 Smith, Asa J., head, WM, Feb 1839, 61, married 0 years, farmer Nola, wife, WF, Dec 1871, 29, married 0 years, 0 children born / 0 still living All born GA/GA/GA He was a farmer, both could read write and speak English. He owned his farm but it was mortgaged, and was listed as a farm instead of a house. I couldn't read the Farm Schedule number as it was too dark & blurred. That must have supposed to been "Nora" as the marriage records show that an Asa J. Smith married Nora Rooks on 17 February 1899. > Smith, Asa J., head, WM, Feb 1839, 61, married 0 years, farmer > Nola, wife, WF, Dec 1871, 29, married 0 years, 0 children born / 0 still > living > All born GA/GA/GA > He was a farmer, both could read write and speak English. Jane, Wonder if this is OUR Asa. Must have married her after Caroline. When did Caroline die? Did they divorce? Tracing family lines gets so confusing. Where did you find this entry. My Ancestry hasn't index 1900 yet. (I'm just full of questions, aren't I? Don't know the answer to the first four questions, but it definitely says "Asa J.". I found the marriage entry in the Marriage Volume book that was put out by the Heard County Historical Society, listing an A.J. Regarding the 1900 census, I have it on a CD and was going thru it looking for family when I came across the two pages that was full of Miller, Bells, etc. I don't have Ancestry. If it isn't indexed (and my CD isn't either), does it go by page or what? I'm not terribly fond of Ancestry and have no subscription to it. Maybe if you tell me that, I can help guide you to the right page so you can find it. It was in the Franklin District, beginning about household 217 and running straight down from that. > Wonder if this is OUR Asa. Must have married her after Caroline. When did > Caroline die?
