They are so human and so sad. He died while in the army and is buried at Mound City, Pulaski, Illinois. They had a son and I do not know if he ever saw his son. She remarried. The letters breaks you heart to read them. I like the idea of a video and a running commentary and may try it for some of the cemeteries I am most fond of. Can one be fond of cemeteries? Some hold some very precious memories of my mother and visiting them with her when I was growing up. We lose so much of that in today's world.

It is rather long and detailed and I haven't looked at it in a long time but it does have the CSA marker I had erected for my great grandfather Ashley on it. Great Grandpa Thompson is also CSA but he is buried in VA and is not there by my great grandmother Martha Elizabeth "Patsy" Adams Thompson. That is one sad story in that she never knew what had happened to him. All she knew was that he never returned. I'm sure there are many sad stories connected to people buried there and too many of us older generations will not have passed them down.

I was down in Heard County earlier this year making pictures and if she had died I think the family would have had the death date put on the tombstone. As I said she is a wonderful lady and I loved her as a child. Her husband was very nice too, very quiet, tall and skinny and had a lot of patience with children for someone who did not have any. The Salem UMC is a beautiful white wood country church and like a lot of cemeteries it has the one covered grave about in the middle of the cemetery, four posts, two sided peaked roof and a short slatted fence around the bottom with an opening, a gate sometimes. The cemetry at Caney Head Methodist Church has one too almost in the middle of the cemetery person not known.

I knew from reading my Thompson family history that she undoubtedly had to be a very sweet person. I've still got a great many cousins living in those areas (Heard, Coweta, Carroll & Troup) that I've never had the pleasure of meeting but I still have hopes of traveling that direction someday. The Thompson side of my family is some of the sweetest people on the earth, I think, and the Bells, etc. all lived at one time around the Salem UMC church area. Lucius Bell, my great grandparents Thompson (as well as the Ashleys), Boswell Hammond, etc. were all neighbors when the Salem church was first built. Great grandfather Abraham Thompson's young daughter was the first one to be buried in that cemetery and it has been my understanding that a John Bell lived at his old homeplace near the church. I just didn't know which John that was but apparently it must be a descendant of John Bell & Fannie Hammond Bell.

The last I knew of Imogene she was still living but that was years ago. I knew this lady. A wonderful person who never had children but loved children and helped with her brother's sons. Imogene was the daughter of Walter Hiram Miller and harriett Jossey Williams and she had two brothers, John Thomas Miller and Walter Howard Miller. She had two sisters also, Martha Norene Miller and mary Helen Miller. John Thomas Miller married Bessie Ernestine Adams. They had four sons, one died at about 16 years of age. This Miller Family has family buried at Salem United Methodist and the Bevis Cemetery and the Miller Cemetery. I do not know where Imogene is buried and will have to check. Imogene and John lived very close to Salem United Methodist Church and used to visit t! hem at their home. Some of the younger generations of Millers still live in Heard County. This is one of my dangling people lines I call it. I have information on Bells and Millers and missing some connecting people.

According to my family notes, "Mary Cansis Hammond lived with her sister, Fannie Hammond Bell, after their mother died and her father married Sidney Harris. Fannie was married to John Bell. In later years, before Ida Lee Thompson Forbus was confined to a nursing home, IMOGENE MILLER, wife of John Bell (DiL of Fannie's) cared for Ida Lee in her declining years." Any thoughts on who Imogene Miller was ?

I had O Z Daniel without the Martha and now it fits like it should. I do not know where the Miller I had came from but intend to find out. I should know better than to trust my memory completely when there are already so many different names and spellings of names depending on where the information comes from. The Census takers kind of winged it a bit in every census. Thanks for the correction and the other information. Interesting about the actress.

It "sounds right" to me. As for the Z, I have no idea what it stands for, but won't surprise me if we find it stands for Zylphia. I am expecting to receive some info from a family Bible from a relative, but haven't gotten it yet. Maybe that will help. Here is what I have on the Alexander P. and Amanda Daniel family - a lot of this is from family records. John A. b 8 Nov 1841, died 22 Oct 1931; married Emily Wilson. Mary E. 13 or 15 FEB 1843 died 13 APR 1934 William H. b 5 MAY 1844; died 22 APR 1863 Missouri A. 15 SEPT 1845; died 1911; married James Simonton Rufus Alexander b 27 MAY 1845, died 8 DEC 1858 Zelphia S. b 31 JULY 1849, died 8 SEP 1919 - never married Julia E. b 16 DEC 1850 died 24 JULY 1920 married a Lipham (John Simon, I believe) Sarah A. E. b 4 July 1852 died 6 SEPT 1909 married Harrison Lane (They are both buried at Salem, also). Rebecca Criswell b 18 APRIL 1854, died 26 JUNE 1922; married James Jefferson Hammond (both buried at Salem) Joseph E. b 27 Oct 1855 Lucy Eldridge b 14 MAY 1857 died 29 Nov 1945; married Samuel Murrell Garrett Martha O. Z. (Sometimes shown as Orazebba, Ora Zebba, etc.) b 31 MAR 1859, died 5 Nov 1935. As I posted earlier, she is buried at Salem next to Samuel, with the name "Mattie Simonton Justus" on the tomb. But the birth and death dates on the tomb match those I have for Martha. At LDS, the 1880 census transcription has Samiel Semelton, 28; Martha Semelton, 21; and a son Perry, age 1. They are in District 987 Heard Co. They are next door to James and Rebecca Hammond, and not far from Harrison and Sarah Lane, and James Simelton 34, Mousorie Simelton 35, with a son Richard, age 3. I believe all this to be essentially correct - if it is not, I hope someone will correct me! One puzzling thing is that Samuel and Martha are shown with a child named Perry . . . perhaps he died as a small child? Also - Carolyn was the child of Carl and Mittie Jane Simonton, but I'm not sure it was the Carl b 1885 died 1966. I don't believe he (Carolyn's father) was that old - I think there was more than one Carl. Another thing of interest - the 30's - 40's movie star Evelyn Keyes (played Sue Ellen in Gone With the Wind) was a grandaughter of Lucy Daniel and Samuel M. Garrett.

For some reason I am showing that Sameul Simonton was married to Martha A. Miller. And I have a Missouri Daniel who was married to a Simonton, do not know his first name. Missouri was one of 11 children of Alexander P. Daniel and Amanda McComb and there is a Rebecca and a Zyphbia and a Mary but no Martha or Mattie. Could Missouri who married the Simonton be the wife of Samuel? Are you sure that you have the right person for the husband of Samuel? I could be wrong because I cannot find my notes for this family and I did not reference them in my database. Maybe the Mattie Simonton Justus was not the wife of Samuel and was a Simonton instead of a Daniel. Just a few thoughts and would like to know for sure who is who and who married who. Anyone have the answers?
