    3. Jack and Dorothy and anyone else: You say you knew the families slightly but know nothing of their ancestry. Actually I'm hoping to find one of those descendants to talk to. So does anyone know how I might contact some of that family? Thanks, Larealia

    3. I'm not sure I can add enough to help, but another name or two to search might get you somewhere - "Dr. Charles Marion Mickle was born Sept 30, 1866 in Roanoke, AL, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McDonald Mickle" "He married Edna Alice Kitchens Jan. 12 1896 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jackson Kitchens." The son, James Toxie was called "Jim T." Erin married William Carey Brannan. They had one daughter, Edna Rebecca. "Hugh married Nelle Vrenee Lane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Hill Lane. (She was from Meriwether Co. GA) They had two daughters, Joyce Vrenee and Myrtis Louise." I knew the families slightly but don't know anything about the ancestry . . . and most of the above I quoted from the History of Heard County 1830 - 1990, compiled by the Heard County Historical Society. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larealia" <larealia@charter.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2003 7:54 PM Subject: [GAHEARD] Charley and Hugh Mickle > I am in search of proof on my Anderson line from Randolph Co., Ala, and the > trail has lead me to Charles Mickle who was on 1920 and 1930 Texas, Heard > Co. census with wife Alice and children Erin and Jim. 3. I am in search of proof on my Anderson line from Randolph Co., Ala, and the trail has lead me to Charles Mickle who was on 1920 and 1930 Texas, Heard Co. census with wife Alice and children Erin and Jim. Next door is a younger man named Hugh Mickle with wife Nellie and daughters Joyce b. about 1919 and Virginia b abt 1921. Hugh would appear to be son of Charles Mickle. I believe Charles Mickle's mother was Lydia Anderson who married Hugh Mickle (who would be the grandfather of the Hugh Mickle on Heard Co. census). Charley Mickle, b. 1867, is on 1880 Randolph Co., AL census with his sister, Cora, b. 1860, and their parents, Hugh and Lydia Mickle. Lydia's brother was my g-g-grandfather, John Prior Anderson, and their parents were Wesley Anderson (1799-1855) and Frances (Harris) Anderson Mickle (1806-1902). Frances married 2nd James M. Mickle between 1860 and 1870. I believe James Mickle is the father of Hugh Mickle who married Lydia Anderson, dau of Frances and Wesley Anderson. What I need is some proof that John Prior Anderson was the son of Frances. If I could locate someone from the Mickle family, that might give me a clue. Lydia was on 1850 census with her parents while her brother John Prior Anderson had already married and was out of his parents' household. Thanks for even the slightest information. Larealia Camp

    3. Jane - thanks again for all the information! When I read your question about Bird Bell, I didn't even notice that you had "Joseph" instead of "James" because the other names were right . . . . except for Bird Bell. I have no idea who that was. My guess would be a cousin boarding to be near school or a job - most likely a job. I remember Aunt Nannie (Nancy) and Uncle Arnold well. Everyone I knew from that family was wonderful, but I remember Uncle Arnold as being especially warm, friendly and kind. He always seemed to single me out to talk to me when I was very young. Maybe it was because my father was named for him. I plan to see a cousin next week who may have a clue as to who the boarder was - I will make a note so I won't forget to ask her. I appreciate any CW information on any of these people - I plan to get together some family ancestry stuff to give to my children and siblings for Christmas. I would like to include a list of all the family members who served, as far as I can determine. I've been reading rosters wherever I can find them, but so often I don't know "who is who". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Benson" <jab50@bellsouth.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 10:29 PM Subject: Re: [GAHEARD] Alexander P. 3. Jane, thank you so much for all that information! I have also just received some information from a Gunn descendant, and she tells me that Lucy J. married Jesse Homer GUNN, and that Joseph married Sara Elizabeth GUNN who was a daughter from a previous marriage of Jesse Homer Gunn. What a tangled web they did weave for us! :) I have this too, from a copy of a handwritten note sent to me by a cousin. It is a copy of some information my aunt requested years ago, and is written in the rather shaky hand of an older person. It is about William M. Hammond and family: "Dad, William M. Hammond born Jan 26, 1856, died Nov 29, 1939. Mother, Nina Hammond born Oct 29, died April 1933. Bert Y. (at least I think it is a "Y") born Feb 14, 1882, died Mar 12, 1963. Lena Hammond (Hester) born Sept 3, I don't know what yr., died ? 15, 1967. Herman Hammond born april 11, 1897. Bertha Hammond Gay, Feb. 2 1899." It is signed by Bertha, who I am sure is now deceased. She must have written this before 1985 because she includes a note, "Tell your Mother I love her" which I am certain referred to my Grandmother who died in 1985. The name of "Mother", Nina Hammond would fit with the Pernina Hester you have, and I suppose Lena must have married a cousin. I also have printouts of the 1880 census info from the LDS site - My "Jim and Becky" HAMMOND were living near Wiley and "Fanie" and their children (Nancy, Edward, Elonza), and Arch and "Susen" who had Georgia V., Emma, Nancy, John, Dovie, and Jocola. It took me a while to find those, as they have the name spelled HAMMON. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Benson" <jab50@bellsouth.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 6:43 PM Subject: Re: [GAHEARD] Alexander P. 3. I agree that the census reports and other reference sources sure is confusing at times. This particular family line has been spelled Hammond, Hammonds, Hammon, Harmon. Jacola on the actual census image is written as Jo Cola and in reality, her name was Silema Jo Cora Hammond, b. 20 November 1876 in Heard County, GA. Silema died in 1954. She was married to Charley Nias Huffman. This is Betty Thornton Jones direct family line back to Archibald & Susan Ann Harris. Lots of wonderful old photos on Betty's website. Thanks so much for the additonal data. Perhaps, slowly bit by bit we can gain more insight into this family. Their names & the history of the old stories is what makes them live again. That's the best part of genealogy......old family Bibles, little notes and letters and incidents and stories and photos, family reunions, etc. I was just looking at where I had jotted down some census notes a while ago for 1900 Heard County. Joseph & Rebecca were in household 251. Francis Marion Screws (married one of my Ashleys) living next door in 252, then in HH 255 were William & Sarah Ashley (this was my grandfather's brother who married my grandmother's sister), ggrandpa's old maid sisters in HH 256 (Martha & Elizabeth Ashley) and Arch Hammond was in household 258. Do you have any idea who the Bird BELL was that was listed as boarder, white male, b. 1877 that was living in the HH with Joseph & Rebecca ? The others in that HH were Arnold L, Nancy E. and Kansas O. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jack and Dorothy <dorothy917@bellsouth.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 7:16 PM Subject: Re: [GAHEARD] Alexander P. 3. My Thompson family history gives the names of some of these children of Boswell & Nancy's but somewhere down the line, I think there must be a few mistakes, or the possibility of two spouses since not all of my cousins agree with my Thompson notes. However, my Thompson cousins knew far better than I did who aunt Mary's siblings & spouses were so I have to listen to both of them. I will list here what is contained in my Thompson history notes: 1. The first child is listed as James Robert Hammond. His wife's given name is all that it gives. Her name was Amanda. According to my notes, James Robert Hammond was born 1833 in Oglethorpe County, GA, died July 27, 1852 in Atlanta, GA during the Civil War. Age at death estimated to be 19. According to some of my Hammond cousins, his middle name was Rufus instead of Robert. 2. Catherine Hammond, born 1834 in Oglethorpe County, GA, married Littleton Phillips. She is buried at Ridgeway Methodist Church Cemetery. She died about 1915. *Peggy Benefield Gilbert Shaw is connected to this family line and she is a great researcher. She has changed email addresses and I can't seem to locate it at the moment. 3. Martha Hammond, b. about 1835 in Oglethorpe County, GA. Neither my Thompson cousins nor some of the Hammond cousins had a spouse listed for Martha or any further data on her. 4. John H. Hammond, b. 1838 in Oglethorpe County, GA has his wife's given name listed as Susan but no last name. 5. Lucy Jane Hammond, b. 1842 in Oglethorpe County, GA. Spouse listed was Jesse Gunn according to my Thompson cousins. My Hammond cousins have him listed as Jessie James Gunn. 6. Archie B. Hammond (Archibald Hammond), b. 1843 in Heard County, GA, died 1919 in Heard County, GA, buried Olive Branch Church Cemetery. Wife was Susan Ann Harris (who was the daughter of John G. Harris & Sidney Pye). We have a cousin named Betty Thornton Jones who has compiled a lot of data on Archibald & Susan's descendants from this line. Betty's email is bluefeth@aol.com She also has other cousins listed on her MyFamily.com website. 7. Frances "Fannie" Hammond, b. December 25, 1844 in Heard County, GA, died August 5, 1927 in Heard County, GA and buried at Salem UMC Cemetery. She married John Bell. 8. Boswell Hammond Jr., b. 1846 in Heard County, GA. His wife's given name is listed as Jane. My Hammond cousins have her name listed as Mary Jane. (He is listed on my CW webpages at http://www.geocities.com/csareserve1/index.html ) as B. Hammond in Company A and so is his brother Joseph Lyon Hammond. 9. Joseph Hammond, b. 1849 in Heard County, GA. Now, this one is a dilly of a point because Aunt Mary's descendants have his wife listed as Sarah Mathis, b. 1848, married November 11, 1884. According to my Hammond cousins, this one was named Joseph Lyon Hammond and he married Sarah Elizabeth Gunn and Joseph & Sarah married January 11, 1866. A wonderful descendant of this line is Amy Penn. Her email address is listed on my CW webpages by Joseph's name. 10. Jim Hammond (??) This must be your James Jefferson Hammond and my Thompson cousins knew him as Jim. Born 1850 in Heard County, GA. Wife's given name was Rebecca. 11. Wiley B. Hammond, b. 1855. Wife's given name listed as Fannie. 12. Bill Hammond, b. 1856 in Troup County, GA. My Hammond cousins tell me this was William Mason Hammond that married Pernina O. Hester. These two buried over in Randolph County, AL 13. Eugenia / Mary Cansis Hammond............which I have already listed her data previously and will not add here again. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jack and Dorothy <dorothy917@bellsouth.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2003 8:39 PM Subject: Re: [GAHEARD] Alexander P. 1. [GAHEARD] Liberty Hill Cemetery Grave Photo Request
    2. AZ LIL OWL
    3. Does anyone on this list have access to the Liberty Hill Cemetery in Heard County, Georgia that would/could take a photo for me of a gravesite? I'm told my great grandmother is buried there, plus the book, "Heard County Georgia Cemeteries," by Lynda S. Eller, does mention the gravesite as being in Liberty Hill. Please email me personally with what you will charge for this request. Thank you, TJ

    3. " but I also love knowing others in the family, and sharing old photos and family reunions.........perhaps I'm just getting old and far more sentimental about these things." I'm the same way! I almost wish I COULD restrict myself to just my direct line . . . sure would save a lot of time :) You have solved one mystery for me - I had decided that Boswell and Nancy Hammond must have had twins about 1850, and one of them died! But that was Mary/Eugenia, right? Interestingly, my branch of the family spells the name "Kansas" and I feel certain that is who my grandmother, Orrie Kansas Hammond, was named for. But I like the spelling "Cansis" - gives it a softer sound! Sometimes people want to know which spelling is "right", but I don't think one is right and one is wrong . . . they're just different. This all goes back to a time when communication was verbal to such an extent that spelling didn't matter much except in legal matters. Do you know who any of the other Hammond children (of Boswell and Nancy) married? I have that Catherine married a PHILLIPS, Frances married John BELL, and Martha married a CRANE. Of course I know that James Jefferson married Rebecca DANIEL, for they are my great-grandparents. And now I know about Mary Cansis/Eugenia and Joseph THOMPSON. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Benson" <jab50@bellsouth.net> To: <GAHEARD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2003 4:43 PM Subject: Re: [GAHEARD] Alexander P. 3. Yes. Aunt Mary is found on the first census following her birth (1860) listed as Eugenia and her name was changed around the time she was age 10 according to her family descendants. On the 1870 census she is listed as Mary C. I had asked my cousins about the Hammonds and was told that they really had not done much on that line other than list Boswell & Nancy's children so I did do a little research into that family. After all, Aunt Mary's children and her sibling's children were all first cousins and grandchildren of Boswell & Nancy's so I really wanted to know more about them. I discovered that the name Kansas was in the Hammond family lines and asked if perhaps Aunt Mary's name should be that way but all of her descendants spell it as Cansis. Kinda reminds me of my kids and all their names beginning with the letter K which most people spell the same names with the letter C. So maybe they were like me and just liked it spelled a different way from the norm. Uncle Joe had a business there in Heard County and I've got a copy of his business ledger covering the years 1889-1895. Did you know that he made Aunt Mary something that was almost unheard of during that time......what we would call a Lazy Susan today? It was a huge round table with a carousal and he also made one for his children later on. Some of these still exist today in his descendants. He made Aunt Mary a pie "cubbard", a storage cabinet, built like a desk with a cover that raised from the top, used to store her baked goods. He was marvelous with woodwork of any kind. Uncle Joe & Aunt Mary built a new house in 1884 that was located on Bowdon Highway 100, near the Salem Church. It was a large house where they raised their family. During the late 1890s there were 10 Thompson family members plus teachers from Simpson School living in the house. Their daughter, Lucy, married one of the teachers, Colonel Dick "C D" Barnes on April 26, 1903. Uncle Joe lost three fingers which were severed at his saw mill and Aunt Mary put them in a small box and buried them in her garden. I guess they are still there. I'll have to find my Hammond notes and get back to you on that, perhaps on a personal basis, since I am sure that there are many who wish I would get off their computers and shut up. But, I've many many notes and family members on Aunt Mary & Uncle Joe's children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and beyond.
