There were a few Cherokee but they were mostly in the North GA. mountains where the terrain is similar to North Carolina. Hogan and Mary A. Blanks, but if not, here is the transcription of it. It is great because there is an affadavit from Thomas M. Hogan's father Thomas Hogan in the file. There is also an affadavit from Mary A. Blanks Hogan's sister-in-law Martha Hogan Blanks in the pension file: Civil War Pension Application of Thomas M. Hogan January 6, 1897 State of Georgia, Heard County T. M. Hogan, of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15, 1894, hereby submits his proofs and after being duly sworn true answers do make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name, where do you reside? T. M. Hogan, Simpson, Heard County, Georgia 2. Where did you reside on Jan 1, 1894 and how long have you been a resident of this state? In Heard County Georgia; have resided in State since birth. 3. When and where were you born? In Coweta County, Georgia in September 1837 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? I enlisted in May 1861 in Dadeville, Ala. in Company A. 1st Ala Regiment. 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? I remained in said Company and Regiment for 2 years and regiment was then reorganized and I remained in it to close of the war. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? About four years. 7. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I was regular discharged at close of the war in 1865. 8. What is your present occupation? Farming 9. How much can you earn (grossP per annum by your own exertions or labor? About $20. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you bse your application for pension, viz; age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or blindness and poverty? Infirmity and poverty. 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition; if on the second condition give a full and complete history of the infirmity and it's extent. I am suffering from rheumatism, has a bad broncal affection and a severe cough and my general health and constitution is all broken down and am now a complete physical wreck. 13. What property, effects of income do you possess and it's gross value? I have about $30 worth of household & kitchen furniture and have no income. 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did you make of same? I had no more property effect or income in 1894, 1895 and 1896 than I have now. 15. In what county did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? In Heard County and returned this property for taxation. 16. How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By what little I could earn and kindness of children and neighbors. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $50. I contributed about $25. 18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896? What pay did you receive in each year? Farming. I received for my own labor about $25. per annum. 19. Have you a family, if so who composes such family; give their means of support, have they a homestead? I have a family of wife and two children. They have no means of support only their work and they have no property. 20. Are you receiving any pension, if so what amount and for what disability? No. T. M. Questions for Witness State of Georgia, Heard County Thomas Hogan of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of T. M. Hogan for pension, and after being duly sworn true answers do make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Thomas Hogan. I reside in Simpson, Heard County, Georgia. 2. Are you aquainted with T. M. Hogan the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? I am. I have known him for 61 years. 3. Where does he reside and how long has he been a resident of this state? He lives in Heard County, Georgia and has so resided (in this state) since his birth. 4. Do you know of his having servd in the Confederate Army or the Georgia Militia? How do you know this? I know he served in the Confederate Army, was with him during his term of service. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? He enlisted in Company A 1st Regiment Ala Militia in May 1861. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. 7. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? He performed rgulary military duty for four years and was a good soldier and was regular discharged at the close of the war. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant? He has only a small amount of household and kitchen furtniture. I live near him and know this circumstances. 9. What propety, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did he make of same? No more than he has ever had. 10. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? He is a farmer and is now wuffering with rheumatism, broncal affliction, has a bad cough and is suffering from general debility. He is now a complete physical wreck. 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? He is unable to support himself by labor of any sort on account of his physical condition. 12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By his own labor, help of children, friends and neighbors. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? About one fourth. 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitled him to a pension? He is now a complete physical wreck on account of his rheumatism, broncal affliction and cough and general bad health. 15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by the applicant? None. Crain,Ordinary July 23, 1897 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appeared, Thomas Hogan, who being duly sworn according to law says on oath that he is the father of T. M. Hogan the applicant for pension, that the 33 acres of land returned for taxes by the applicant is the property of Deponent and the said T.M. Hogan has no interest in it nor did he ever have. That he is 95 years old and unable to do any work and that he lives with his son and gives him the use of the said land for his support and to pay the taxes on same and on this account he authorized the said T.M. Hogan to return the property in his name. He has no interest in this pension being allowed. Thomas Hogan, X, his mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this July 23rd 1897. Robt G. Grain, Ordinary Robt G. Crain, Ordinary, Heard County, GA do certify that Thomas Hogan is a trustworthy citizen and his statements are entitled to full faith and credit and are worthy of belief. January 21, 1901 Applications for Pensions Due Deceased Soldiers County of Heard, State of Georgia Personally appeared, Mrs. Mary A. Hogan of the County of Heard, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn on oath says that she is the widow of T. M. Hogan, who was a disabled Confederate Soldier and whose name has been duly enrolled as entitled to pension of Sixty Dollars Annually from the State of Georgia. That said T.M. Hogan died on the 10th day of January 1901 in Heard County and that at his death, his right to said pension for the year ending Oct 26, 1901 had accrued, but had not been paid to him for the said pension year. Applicant, as his widow, applies for the amount which would have been paid him had he lived to this time. Mary A. Hogan, X, her mark Widow's Pension of M. A. Hogan of Heard County, Georgia, Widow of T. M. Hogan February 5, 1902 State of Georgia, County of Heard Personally came Mrs. M.A. Hogan who says on oath that she is the widow of T. M. Hogan, to whom in the County of Heard, State of Georgia she was married on the 15th day of January 1865, that she remained his wife up to the 9th day of January 1901 at which time he died, and that she has not since married. At the time of his death he was a resident of Heard County in the State of Georgia and was on the indigent pension roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $60. per annum on account of being a soldier in Company A 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteers. What affliction have you and how does it affect you? I am all crippled up with rheumatism. Constitution and general health wrecked and she is worn out. What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st of January 1900? I have been doing nothng, not able to work. What property or affects had you on 1st January 1900? I had nothing. What have you acquired since, and what income have you now? I have not acquired anything since that time. What disposition have you made of any property since 1st January 1900 and at which price and for what purpose? None Deponent further says that she is a resident of Heard County and has continuously resided in the state of Georgia since 1866. She applies for the pension provided by Act of General Assembly approved Dec 18, 1901. M.A. Hogan, X, her mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this 5th day of February 1902. Robt. G. Crain, Ordinary of Heard County May 20, 1902 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally came, Mrs. M.A. HOGAN who on oath says that she married T.M. Hogan on Jan'y 15, 1865 and that he in a few days after that time returned to the war and served out his time and never returned home until May 1865. M. A. Hogan May 20, 1902 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally came, Mrs. Martha BLANKS, who on oath says that T. M. Hogan and M.A. BLANKS were married on January 15, 1865 and that M.A. Hogan is now the widow and person that T.M. Hogan married on that day. This was in the State of Alabama. I was at the marriage and have personal knowledge of this fact. That the said T. M. Hogan then returned to the war and served out his time with his command and remained in the service until the close of the war in April 1865. I personally know the above stated facts. I have lived near Mrs. M.A. Hogan since before they married. I have no interest in the recovery of a pension for the applicant. Martha Blanks, X, her mark I hereby certify that Martha BLANKS is known to me as a reputable citizen and that her statements are entitled to full credit. Robt G. Crain, Ordinary. ******************************************************************** State of Georgia, Heard County January 18, 1907 For Indigent Widow's Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia, County of Heard Personally comes Mrs. M.A. Hogan, who being duly sworn on oath, says that she is a bona fide resident of said County of Heard, State of Georgia, and that she has resided in said State since continuously since 1865, that she is the widow of Thomas M. Hogan, who was a soldier in Company A of the 1st Ala Regiment of Ala Volunteers, that he enlisted in said regiment on or about the month of May 1861 and served in the Army to the close of the war. That he died on the 10th day of Jan 1900. That she is old, worn out and destitute of means and not able to work for a living. M. A. Hogan January 6, 1897 State of Georgia, Heard County T. M. Hogan, of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved December 15, 1894, hereby submits his proofs and after being duly sworn true answers do make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name, where do you reside? T. M. Hogan, Simpson, Heard County, Georgia 2. Where did you reside on Jan 1, 1894 and how long have you been a resident of this state? In Heard County Georgia; have resided in State since birth. 3. When and where were you born? In Coweta County, Georgia in September 1837 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? I enlisted in May 1861 in Dadeville, Ala. in Company A. 1st Ala Regiment. 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? I remained in said Company and Regiment for 2 years and regiment was then reorganized and I remained in it to close of the war. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? About four years. 7. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I was regular discharged at close of the war in 1865. 8. What is your present occupation? Farming 9. How much can you earn (gross per annum by your own exertions or labor? About $20. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you bse your application for pension, viz; age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or blindness and poverty? Infirmity and poverty. 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition; if on the second condition give a full and complete history of the infirmity and it's extent. I am suffering from rheumatism, has a bad broncal affliction and a severe cough and my general health and constitution is all broken down and am now a complete physical wreck. 13. What property, effects of income do you possess and it's gross value? I have about $30 worth of household & kitchen furniture and have no income. 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did you make of same? I had no more property effect or income in 1894, 1895 and 1896 than I have now. 15. In what county did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? In Heard County and returned this property for taxation. 16. How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By what little I could earn and kindness of children and neighbors. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $50. I contributed about $25. 18. What was your employment during 1895 and 1896? What pay did you receive in each year? Farming. I received for my own labor about $25. per annum. 19. Have you a family, if so who composes such family; give their means of support, have they a homestead? I have a family of wife and two children. They have no means of support only their work and they have no property. 20. Are you receiving any pension, if so what amount and for what disability? No. T. M. Questions for Witness State of Georgia, Heard County Thomas Hogan of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of T. M. Hogan for pension, and after being duly sworn true answers do make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Thomas Hogan. I reside in Simpson, Heard County, Georgia. 2. Are you aquainted with T. M. Hogan the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? I am. I have known him for 61 years. 3. Where does he reside and how long has he been a resident of this state? He lives in Heard County, Georgia and has so resided (in this state) since his birth. 4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate Army or the Georgia Militia? How do you know this? I know he served in the Confederate Army, was with him during his term of service. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? He enlisted in Company A 1st Regiment Ala Militia in May 1861. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. 7. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? He performed rgulary military duty for four years and was a good soldier and was regular discharged at the close of the war. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant? He has only a small amount of household and kitchen furniture. I live near him and know this circumstances. 9. What propety, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did he make of same? No more than he has ever had. 10. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? He is a farmer and is now wuffering with rheumatism, broncal affliction, has a bad cough and is suffering from general debility. He is now a complete physical wreck. 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? He is unable to support himself by labor of any sort on account of his physical condition. 12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By his own labor, help of children, friends and neighbors. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? About one fourth. 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitled him to a jpension? He is now a complete physical wreck on account of his rheumatism, broncal affliction and cough and general bad health. 15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by the applicant? None. Crain,Ordinary July 23, 1897 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally appeared, Thomas Hogan, who being duly sworn according to law says on oath that he is the father of T. M. Hogan the applicant for pension, that the 33 acres of land returned for taxes by the applicant is the property of Deponent and the said T.M. Hogan has no interest in it nor did he ever have. That he is 95 years old and unable to do any work and that he lives with his son and gives him the use of the said land for his support and to pay the taxes on same and on this account he authorized the said T.M. Hogan to return the property in his name. He has no interest in this pension being allowed. Thomas Hogan, X, his mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this July 23rd 1897. Robt G. Grain, Ordinary Robt G. Crain, Ordinary, Heard County, GA do certify that Thomas Hogan is a trustworthy citizen and his statements are entitled to full faith and credit and are worthy of belief. WItness my hand and seal this July 23rd 1897, Robt G. Grain, Ordinary. January 21, 1901 Applications for Pensions Due Deceased Soldiers County of Heard, State of Georgia Personally appeared, Mrs. Mary A. Hogan of the County of Heard, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn on oath says that she is the widow of T. M. Hogan, who was a disabled Confederate Soldier and whose name has been duly enrolled as entitled to pension of Sixty Dollars Annually from the State of Georgia. That said T.M. Hogan died on the 10th day of January 1901 in Heard County and that at his death, his right to said pension for the year ending Oct 26, 1901 had accured, but had not been paid to him for the said pension year. Applicant, as his widow, applies for the amount which would have been paid him had he lived to this time. Mary A. Hogan, X, her mark Widow's Pension of M. A. Hogan of Heard County, Georgia, Widow of T. M. Hogan February 5, 1902 State of Georgia, County of Heard Personally came Mrs. M.A. Hogan who says on oath that she is the widow of T. M. Hogan, to whom in the County of Heard, State of Georgia she was married on the 15th day of January 1865, that she remained his wife up to the 9th day of January 1901 at which time he died, and that she has not since married. At the time of his death he was a resident of Heard County in the State of Georgia and was on the indigent pension roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $60. per annum on account of being a soldier in Company A 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteers. What affliction have you and how does it affect you? I am all crippled up with rheumatism. Constitution and general health wrecked and she is worn out. What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st of January 1900? I have been doing nothng, not able to work. What property or affects had you on 1st January 1900? I had nothing. What have you acquired since, and what income have you now? I have not acquired anything since that time. What disposition have you made of any property since 1st January 1900 and at which price and for what purpose? None Deponent further says that she is a resident of Heard County and has continuously resided in the state of Georgia since 1866. She applies for the pension provided by Act of General Assembly approved Dec 18, 1901. M.A. Hogan, X, her mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this 5th day of February 1902. Robt. G. Crain, Ordinary of Heard County May 20, 1902 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally came, Mrs. M.A. HOGAN who on oath says that she married T.M. Hogan on Jan'y 15, 1865 and that he in a few days after that time returned to the war and served out his time and never returned home until May 1865. M. A. Hogan May 20, 1902 State of Georgia, Heard County Personally came, Mrs. Martha BLANKS, who on oath says that T. M. Hogan and M.A. BLANKS were married on January 15, 1865 and that M.A. Hogan is now the widow and person that T.M. Hogan married on that day. This was in the State of Alabama. I was at the marriage and have personal knowledge of this fact. That the said T. M. Hogan then returned to the war and served out his time with his command and remained in the service until the close of the war in April 1865. I personally know the above stated facts. I have lived near Mrs. M.A. Hogan since before they married. I have no interest in the recovery of a pension for the applicant. Henry Lane, that was in Heard Co., and the went to Randolph Co. about 1850, and there is a Lanes Chapel Methodist church there, that is named for him!
