The Callaway Gardens Country Store had a line of products with Pine Mountain in the trade name since the Gardens store is atop Pine Mountain. Officials in Callaway Gardens wanted a separate post office designated Pine Mountain in order that their Pine Mountain products would be shipped from Pine Mountain and not Chipley. Even at that early time quite a large number of packages were mailed from the Gardens store. When leaders in Chipley found out about the proposed Pine Mountain post office, they knew that the reduction in volume from Callaway would lower the classification of the Chipley P.O. It would drop back to a lower class facility. They negotiated with officials from Callaway Gardens who agreed to continue to bring their shipments to the Chipley P. O. if the name of the town were changed to Pine Mountain. The main highway in Chipley dangerously curved around the railroad depot, creating a very unsafe intersection. Since Cason Callaway was on the board of directors of the railroad, town leaders wondered if he would use his influence to get the depot moved from the middle of the road. It was agreed that the town would change its name if that could be done as well. After much speculation and discussion all around town for months, the town council voted to approve the change. No one knew it at the time, but on the very day the council approved the change, the Town of Chipley was 75 years old. My mother, Mary Carlisle Askew, was city clerk, and she discovered this in the process of getting all the information together petitioning the Georgia legislature to approve this change. It took about two years to get state and federal approval. The name change greatly helped Callaway Gardens for Pine Mountain sounds like a resort. The name "Chipley" does not have tourism appeal in the way "Pine Mountain" does. Incidentally, the towns of Chipley, Georgia, and Chipley, Florida, were named for the same business man W. P. Chipley. Mr. Chipley had financed the extension of the railroad from Columbus, GA, as far as the town of Chipley. ~ ~ ~ A. L. AsKew Athens GA 2003-11-22 From: Barbara Smallwood Stock To: Albert L. It was such a good response and I think a number of people are interested. Barbara Smallwood Stock -----Original Message----- From: Albert L.
