To Mary & any others interested in when & how the town of Chipley became Pine Mountain: I searched the Legislative Documents on the Galileo online database (has legislative docs from the 1700's to present] and found the following item which gives the date. It does not give the reason for the change but I suspect it had to do with the mountain being more marketable to the tourist trade. The Chamber of Commerce would probably be able to give a more definitive answer. Law Number: No. 29 Origin: (House Bill No. 664). Full Title: An Act to amend an Act entitled, "To incorporate The Town of Chipley, in the County of Harris, and for other purposes", approved December 9, 1882 (Ga. L. 1882-1883, pp. 265-268) and all acts amendatory thereto so as to change the name of said Town of Chipley to Town of Pine Mountain. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Georgia, and it is hereby enacted by authority of the same: Section 1. That an Act entitled, "To incorporate the Town of Chipley, in the County of Harris, and for other purposes", approved December 9, 1882 (Ga. L. 1882-1883, pp. 265-268) and all Acts amendatory thereto be and the same is hereby amended so that the corporate name of said Town of Chipley be and the same is hereby changed from "Town of Chipley" to "Town of Pine Mountain". [Sidenote: Name changed.] Section 2. That all laws and parts of laws in conflict with the provisions of this Act be and the same are hereby repealed. Georgia, Harris County: Before me, an officer who is authorized by law to administer oaths, personally came W. D. Sivell, who on oath says that he is Representative in the Georgia House of Representatives from Harris County, and that he is the author of a bill to which notice is hereto attached, and that the attached notice was published in the Harris County Journal, a newspaper published in Harris County, Georgia, it being the official organ of said Harris County, Georgia, that said notice of intention to introduce said bill was published in said paper in three consecutive issues thereof within 60 days next preceding ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Page: 2102 this affidavit, and that the notice has been published as required by law. /s/ W.
