Chipley Physican Runs Amuck and is Killed By Town Marshall. John C. Hardy, aged about thirty five years, a well known physician of Chipley, Ga., was shot to death there at noon Thursday in the store of S.A. Goodman, mayor of the town, by Olin White, the Marshall of Chipley. During the morning Dr. Hardy had publicly horsewhipped an old white man who had offended him. A case was made against him. At noon Dr. Hardy walked into Goodman's store, pulled out a pistol and asked the mayor how much he was going to fine him. In the conversation he called the mayor a liar. Marshall White was in the store, and when he started to interfere, Hardy began shooting. Both he and the Marshall fired three shots. When the smoke cleared Dr. Hardy was dead, having been shot through the body and through the head, his brains splattering the floor. Mayor Goodman had been shot through the left arm and the bone shattered near the wrist, and Marshall White was uninjured, although two bullets had gone through his clothing. Dr. Hardy leaves a wife and several children. File size: 1.5 Kb
