If you received a similar copy of this email, please accept my apology. Many lists did not receive the one I sent on Sunday. Some that did said the email was too large. There was more info on the family names mentioned below. If you are interested in the other info, please email me privately. All, On Sunday, February 9th at 1:00 pm, a group of descendants and other interested persons will meet at the Clapp Cemetery in Columbus, GA to make plans on cleaning the cemetery up. We would like to extend an invitation to all those who are interested to attend. We welcome anyone who may have relatives buried at the cemetery, who may have information about the Clapp's Factory mill, community or cemetery, or who may simply be curious about the cemetery and the project. In 1834, the Clapp's Factory mill was established above Columbus on the Georgia bank of the Chattahoochee River (near the site of present-day Oliver Dam). Around the mill grew up a village where the factory workers lived, shopped and attended church. The Clapp's Factory Cemetery was in use by 1856, purportedly on the site of an ancient Native American burial ground, and continued to be used until at least 1904. However, the mill closed in the mid-1880's, and over time the families moved away and the cemetery deteriorated. No records for the cemetery have been located,. We are working to restore and maintain this sacred final resting place of our loved ones. Surnames believed to be connected to the cemetery include (but are not limited to): ABNEY, ALLGOOD, BELCHER, BIRD/BYRD, BROWN, CAIN, CHRISTIAN, CLEGG, COGGINS, COLE, FOSTER, GOLDSMITH, GRANTHAM, HEATH, HELMS, HILL, HOPKINS, JACKSON, LEWIS, LUMMUS, MARTIN, MILLER, MORRIS, NEWSOM(E), NIX, PAGE, PATTERSON, PIKE, SKIPPER, STATHAM/STATUM, TOLLERSON/TOLLISON, VICKERY, WARREN, WOODS. In addition to the mill workers and their families, burials likely include slaves, ex-slaves, veterans of the War of 1812, Confederate soldiers, and Native Americans. The cemetery encompassed five acres. A list of persons known or supposed to be buried at Clapp's Factory follows at the foot of this message.
