    1. [GAHARRIS] Re: Park

    3. There is a Wildwood Park on the corner of 17th Street and Wildwood Avenue in Columbus. It's very small. Most think it's just a sparsely wooded area. Across the street from Columbus High School is either Weracoba Park or Lake Bottom. Across the street from there were the new little league field is the other one. There are signs on the corners of '17th Street and Cherokee Avenue' and '17th Street and 18th Avenue' that state which is which. The signs say Lake Bottom at Wildwood and Lake Bottom at Weracoba. But at this point I can't remember which sign is on the corner. I didn't come home that way today. kemis ----- Original Message ----- In Columbus there was a man made park. Made in 1888. It has been called: Wildwood Weracoba Park Lake Bottom in the St. Elmo area. As teenagers my parents visited the Park , that they called Weracoba. There was a Lake, A Trolley from downtown that stopped at what is now known as St. Elmo Shopping Center across the street from St. Elmo School., dance pavilion, ballfields, Zoo and other attractions. Does anyone know where these attractions were located. It was first called Wildwood, my parents called it Weracoba Park , then I came along and called it Lake Bottom. The park was active from 1888 until 1925 , the the lake was drained. The park went form 18th avenue to 17th avenue--Girrard to Forrest Ave. It's the park across from Columbus High School where everyone walks and jogs. It is now in the Historial District. In my own search for information on my Blanton/DeLamar heritage, I have just come across his contributions to the Harris County website, one of which contains obituaries taken from a page from my great-grandmother's scrapbook that includes my grandfather's obituary, I have tried hitting on the link for Grey Blanton, and AOL insists that the linked e-mail address belongs to an "unknown member." It's possible that Mr. Blanton has blocked incoming transmits for privacy purposes, which I thoroughly understand. Would you please forward this e-mail to him, or else if would create absolutely no difficulty for you, send me his/her corrected e-mail address? I would greatly appreciate it. 1. [GAHARRIS] Waverly Hall and Shiloh communities
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Randy gave a good explanation about these communities. I had never thought about the mail route as being connecting links -- stronger than county lines! That would be a good thing to keep in line whenever we're researching towns that lie on county lines. From Randy: Not only is Shiloh adjacent to the northwest corner of Talbot County, the Shiloh post office mail route covers quite an area of Talbot County. That has been true for many years, at least back to the early 1900s. In addition, that part of Harris County was originally Talbot County (for the first year or so after ceation in the 1820s), and in the 1850s, I think, a further small area in the Shiloh area was moved from Talbot to Harris County. At least part of Shiloh itself was involved. Hope this is helpful. Randy Phillips

    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Carla, who is so wonderful to be transcribing newspapers has asked for some help in identifying these locations.... Shiloh and Waverly Hall She's working on The Butler Herald (Taylor Co) and previously did work on The New Era (Butler Co). There was a society column in New Era for Shiloh. http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/histcountymaps/harris1883map.htm This map shows both Shiloh and Waverly Hall in Harris County but near the Talbot border. I'm assuming that the county boundary line shown here would have continued to exist during the time of the newspapers she's working on -- but we would like to have others comments and input. Is the explanation of why articles were in the Talbot papers, that the community was so near Talbot and perhaps those folks associated themselves more with Talbotton than Harris Co seat Hamilton? Sometimes it may have depended on the condition of the roads to determine where people went to shop or do business. Any ideas on this?? It might also have something to do with Church Associations and the way the area was organized. Maybe someone could help us explain that as far as Primitive Baptist Association or Methodist (don't know if they had a Presbyterian church)

    1. [GAHARRIS] John Wallace's Home (On John Wallace Road or not?)
    2. Could any one tell me if the home of John Wallace is still standing? The Home is it on the (John) Wallace Road? Is the house before or after you turn off the road from Pine Mountain to the left on (John) Wallace's Road? Is the house close to the Highway or is it on down the road across the bridges where all the Construction is going on no? There is a Trailer Park on the right side the you pass the lakes, then on down are other houses, there is also a modest type house then a large , looks very tall, Barn. The Barn looks very old. When you turn off the highway there is a smaller house on the left , maybe a screen porch in a shaded area, not far from the road. This house is rather small and no Barns. Does anyone know what the house looks like that Josephine and John Wallace lived in and what part of Wallace Road, and was the house on Wallace. Story goes he own 3000 acres of land. Could his house been built somewhere else on his land. Can anyone tell me about William (aka Wilson) Turner's son who lived in Woodbury , Ga. as a grown up and what happen to him? What was his name and when he died? Thanks for any help. Sandra

A copy of this actual handwritten record was made at the Salt Lake City Utah LDS Library by a hired research group, and then purchased and transcribed by myself, TJ Malone. It was then proof read by Fred Malone. Every effort has been made to interpret the document correctly, though some mistakes may have occurred due to the documents condition, as well as the difficulty in reading the old handwriting. I have added punctuation marks, words in parentheses, and the capitalization of all surnames to help the reader to better understand the document. Please report any errors to me personally by email. The Ira E. Farmer, mentioned in this record is my 3rd Great Grandfather. He is also a brickwall in my Farmer family research. Ira was born circa 1806, in North Carolina. The exact county of NC is yet unknown as well as the proven names of his parents and his siblings. However, it is my theory that the James Farmer, John Farmer, Roda Gardener, wd., and Anna Farmer mentioned in this record may very well be the siblings of Ira E. Farmer. It’s also my unproven theory that the James Farmer, R.S. that drew land in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery while living in Henry County, GA is the father of my Ira E. Farmer and his possible mentioned siblings. I’m not at all sure, but would love to know how the William Mays, Isaac Reeves, and Francis A. Morris, connects with this Farmer family. If you are a descendant of this Farmer family, a descendant of any of the other names mentioned in this document, or if you have information/records that might help with this family research and proving, then please, feel welcomed to contact me. Morris connects with this Farmer family. If you are a descendant of this Farmer family, a descendant of any of the other names mentioned in this document, or if you have information/records that might help with this family research and proving, then please, feel welcomed to contact me. 3. Anybody know anything about these early academies -- where they were located, (there is a specific land lot mentioned) Both Land District 22 and 17 seem to be on the East side of Harris County -- but there probably was a church or community near them? Is Mount Airy a correct name? how long they were in business -- or anything about the trustees named. (If there are errors in the spelling of the surnames, please do let us know) from:Galileo ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE State of Georgia, PASSED IN MILLEDGEVILLE AT AN ANNUAL SESSION IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER, 1832. 3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/military.htm#indian Linda Ayres has typed up another 1836 Roster -- this one is for Harris County. See if you recognize anyone -- and could identify them. Many of these men received bounty land and pensions later in life for this service of just a few months.
