    1. Fw: [GAHARRIS] Need replacement
    2. Kemis Massey
    3. Hi all, Several days ago, Rex ask if someone to take over as the list administrator for Harris County. I volunteered and now am the new list administrator. What does this mean? If there is a problem with either subscribing or unsubscribing from the Harris County list (GAHARRIS-L-request@rootsweb.com with subscribe or unsubscribe in the subject line), then let me know and I will take care of it. Any info that needs to be posted will still be sent to Barbara Smallwood Stock at bsstock@comcast.net or to http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/index.html. I would like to thank Rex for allowing me to take over handling this list for him. I would also like to thank him for his contributions to this list. If you visit the Harris County archive pages or web pages, you will find his contributions from his Harris County Roots. We could all learn a lesson from his wiliness to share his findings with us. Thanks Rex and good luck with your next endeavor. kemis massey List Administrator: Chattahoochee, Harris, and Muscogee Counties ----- Original Message ----- From: Rexmt2@aol.com I am in need of a replacement to take over as the list administrator for Harris county Georgia. 2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Thank you so very much, Rex, for being the List Manager for these years. So much of your work was behind the scenes, so not everyone may be aware of all the administrative tasks you performed. We're lucky to have such an active and helpful GAHARRIS-L list, and I'm sure that will continue. Everyone has something to contribute, so never hesitate to ask your questions (which might just give someone else an idea of something to pursue). And also a big thank you to Rootsweb which continues to provide this service of County Lists free of charge. I believe that the Mailing Lists provide a wonderful service for even beginners on-line. 1. Thomaston-Upson Co Archives

    3. The Thomaston-Upson County Archives just keeps growing and growing. If any of you are planning to do research in this area of Georgia this summer, don't forget to include at least one day to visit the Archives. Penny, Cliff, Archivist/Director, and her staff are just wonderful in helping you find your way around. And teams of volunteers work to make the materials more readily available. This is an OLD listing of some of the things that can be found in the Archives -- and I want to add to it. So if you've been a visitor there, let me know about something you may have used. I know that they have countless CDs and Census records available. Records Transferred to the Thomaston Archives Inventory and Appraisement Records List all the property of an estate including personal property Records of Accounts Lists how the estate was handled..how the money, slaves, property were distributed (usually family members). Lots of valuable information about minor children and guardians as well. Loose Estate papers Index on-line for Loose Estate Paper Poor School Records(1830s-1860s) Records on-line Not many children were lucky enough to go to a plantation school. Most boys and girls had to go to "Old Field Schools," if they went to school at all. These schools were built in an old field, often a worn-out cotton patch. A neighborhood had several children in it, and the parents wanted a school for them. So somebody gave a field that was good for nothing else, and the neighbors all came in and built a one room log schoolhouse in this old field. They hired almost anyone who would take the job of schoolmaster. The main thing the State did to help early eduction was to supply a "poor school fund." a part of this money the State used to send poor children to school for three years. Every student age person was listed who attended the school, so it doesn't necessarily mean they were poor. These loose papers (submitted by teachers from the militia districts) name the children eligible for schooling (may have ages, others give birthdates) Marriage Record Applications 1875-76 Copied by Mr. Jack Morgan Birth and Death Records 1876-1876 Copied by Mr. Jack Morgan Funeral Home Records Stephen Funeral Home Pasley Funeral Homes (Interments from 1920 to approximately 1946) 1920-1935 grouping are by date of death 1936-1946 grouping are alphabetical by name of deceased Funeral home Index gives name of deceased, name of person paying for burial in later cases, date of death, and name of cemetery. 3. The county courthouse is in Hamilton on Highway 27 (you can't miss it). Records are in the lower/lowest floor. Do you know what part of the county that the Wests called home? I'm familiar with the eastern part of the county--Shiloh, Waverly Hall, Pine Mountain Valley. Hamilton is in the center of the county. Pine Mountain (formerly known as Chipley) is the largest town, toward the north of the county, and features the nature/golf resort Callaway Gardens. -----Original Message----- From: DRTJOHN@aol.com [mailto:DRTJOHN@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, April 11, 2004 7:56 PM To: GAHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAHARRIS] Levin West I am searching for the place where Levin West might be buried .he died in Harris Co.sometime between 1850and 1860.His wife's name was Jane I found her still living in Harris Co.on the 1870 census.I know nothing about Harris Co.
