Hi all, Seeking more info on James Monroe Watson. He was born in 1852 and died in 1931, was married to Fannie Jane Dorman sometime about 1875, but I haven't located a marriage or death record for him yet. Does anyone have access to marriage records about 1875 or death records for 1931 who would be willing to do a lookup for me? Have info to share with anyone interested. Appreciate any help/assistance. Hello Listmembers, It was called to my attention, I forget to say the slaves were in the care of Joseph Davis of Harris Co. Ga. I am sorry about this overlook. Thanks Ellen Parker
Hello Listmembers, Our family has a bill of sale in Columbia Co. Arkansas for slaves. They were sold to a William G. Barton of Columbia Co. by Payton Letcher and Martha W. Parker. They were in the care of Joseph Davis. I feel like these slaves were willed to either Payton or Martha, since they had been in Arkansas for at least 10 years before the sale in 1857. If anyone can make a connection please contact me. Thanks Ellen Parker
Marriage record from Harris Co. Henry Truitt m Eliz Brown Oct 7, 1832 Pernell and Mary are listed in the 1830 &1850 census being from Md. but I did not find Henry in the 1850 census. Nor did I find him in the 1840 census. hope THIS IS OF SOME HELP
I am searching for descendants of Henry Newman Truitt, b. 1815 in GA (we think Harris County) who married Nancy Brown c 1832 (marriage record). His parents are said to be Purnell and Mary Truitt. We descend from them. They moved to Clay County or Tallapoosa County, AL where they were listed in the 1870 Census of Tallapoosa in Hackney Twp. Thanks for any response. Derrick, The Middlebrooks cemetery is located in the Hopewell Community. There is a record at the Hamilton Courthouse as to location of cemeteries, but we have not had a chance to follow the map of record. We thought it was probably on the piece of wooded land in front of Beech Springs Church. ??? Ancestors are Nelsons and Middlebrooks in that community. The Nelson cemetery is there and in good shape. Feel free to call on us as you work on your project; we would be happy to help. Derrick, I commend you on your grand vision. It sounds great. Rootsweb has free space available. You might consider that for your site. Sorry I don't live closer to be more involved helping with the cemeteries. If I can write letters, make phone calls, whatever to elected officials to help in preserving sites let me know who and where. I am the third great grandson of Pleasant P and Lavinia Massey and Edmund and Sarah Cook of Harris Co GA. Good Luck. Harold in New Orleans
Hello List, I am trying to locate the grave of Blackman W. Dixon, of Harris County. According to an Apr 16, 1885 obituary that I found on microfilm of the LaGrange Reporter, in the Archives of Troup Co., Blackman was 85 years old and died on 14 Apr 1885. The obit said he was an old citizen of Harris Co. He must have once lived in the West Point area of Troup Co. before 1856 because of several Troup Co. court records available, then moved to the Whitesville Post Office area of Harris Co. because he was in the Census of Troup for 1840 and 1850 Census, then in the 1860 Census of Harris Co. taken at the Whitesville Post Office area. I read Blackman's will and will probate records at the courthouse in Hamilton, and I know he died in Harris Co., but I do not know where. According to the obituary, Blackman Dixon was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. I made several personal surveys of the Shady Grove Cemetery in Harris Co., but could not find his grave. However, one of Blackman Dixon's sons (Benjamin F. Dixon) and family are buried in Shady Grove Cemetery. I drove all day around the countryside in the Whitesville area and many country roads east of there trying to locate cemeteries, but even having the USGS coordinates and Street Atlas 7.0, it was useless because most of the USGS registered cemeteries are off the road hidden in briars and bramble on private property, and most cemeteries cannot be spotted from the road. I hope Mr. Derrick Chapman's active survey of Harris County cemeteries becomes a reality and can be viewed online. He has a lot of difficult work involvement doing such a survey, and is to be commended for it. V. Allen Singletary Knoxville, TN [email protected]
Yes, Adrienne, that's exactly how I located the cemetery I was looking for at Ridgeway. I ordered maps of the east part of the county from USGS. Only took about a week to get them. I suppose that might be the best way to track down where the Middlebrooks cemetery might be. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, February 25, 2000 12:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GAHARRIS] HERITAGE BOOK? Not sure if you're replying to my post or someone else's. I'm working all by myself on a project (so I guess I'm in charge of it)that could mushroom. I want to put together a web site and archive of Harris County history. Databases, memoirs, digitized photos, the works. A repository of Harris County historical information freely downloadable and usable to the public. If it gets too big for my web space--great!---I'll offer to burn CD's of the material for cost of production. First priority for me is to establish it as a work that doesn't infringe on anyone's copyright, particularly that of the Barfield family. (She put a lot of work into her book and her survivors are justly entitled to any profits.) I would insist that all work contributed by me and others to this project must be done as a public service, no strings attached. Currently, I'm conducting a survey of cemeteries in the eastern part of the county (where I'm from and where I currently live)to provide an on-line listing that covers all identifiable graves. Ms. Barfield's book excluded black cemeteries, so that is one area where there isn't an existing baseline to work from. She also included family cemeteries that aren't easy or possible to locate now, so that's another problem. Some grander thoughts occur as I fantasize: --- making sure that all US war veteran's graves have a decent headstone, and applying for VA headstones for those that don't. --- getting the county commissioners to do something (if they can) about cemeteries that are neglected and overgrown with brush. --- getting a Georgia historical marker or two erected if I can dig up (no pun intended) justification. --- encouraging descendants to visit cemeteries on Memorial Day so that Memorial Day becomes a chance to commemmorate all our ancestors (veterans or not) --- getting interested folks together (either as a formal or as an informal group) to share historical and genealogical info Big Dreams. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, February 25, 2000 12:10 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [GAHARRIS] Herritage book I have volumes to add to the book on my family and other data I have collected over the years. I don't recall which community section (in Barfield's book) the Middlebrooks Cemetery is listed in. I just yesterday tracked down a cemetery in the now-defunct Ridgeway community. Down a dirt road off Hwy 315, off in the thorn bushes and pines. Family cemeteries often get neglected, abandonned, overgrown, and erased by time and indifference.
