"Kemis Massey" <[email protected]> From: "Kemis Massey" <[email protected]> Subject: Clapp Cemetery - Columbus (Muscogee County) GA Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 21:34:08 -0400 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 Hi, In Columbus, GA in the 1800's we had the Clapp Factory on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Close by the Clapp Village was built for the factory workers. Later a cemetery was placed on the hill over-looking the Charrahoochee. The Clapp Cemetery records seems to be lost. Known buried: Mary Catherine Skipper (b. Nov 28, 1825 - d. Sep 10, 1880) daughter of Isaac W. Woods and Eliza/Elizabeth Patterson, wife of Jacob S. Skipper (son of Silas S. Skipper and Esther/Ester) John P. Lewis (B. Dec 12, 1812 - D. Feb 10, 1886) Grave of a child, J.F. Cain no dates Other family names rumored to have been buried there: Hopkins, Miller, Warren, Watson (several years back Ms Watson told other locals she had 14 family members buried in the cemetery) and Bird. There are suppose to be 20 Confederate soldiers from Georgia and Alabama there. Also American Indians and Slaves are buried there. The reason for the email is the land the cemetery is on was purchased in the 1920's by Georgia Power. Georgia Power feels it is not their responsibility to take care of the cemetery and that is a job that the families should be doing. At this point in time, I need to attempt to find as many descendants of the deceased buried in Columbus Georgia's forgotten Cemetery. Ultimately we would like to have the cemetery cleaned to the point that descendants could actually visit the graves. The cemetery is a jungle. This is a job that will have to be tackled during fall or winter. It is also a monumental undertaking. . . there is no way this would be a day's work. I have already been in touch with several descendants, several local Historic societies, several local historians, Sons of Confederate veterans, and Daughters of Confederate Veterans asking for guidance and help. So far all agree, if it can be done it will be monumental. But if you look at it as being part of your heritage to take care of your ancestors graves and we all work together, we could make the Clapp Cemetery a true resting place for those buried in a beautiful place so long ago. You are taking to time to find out where you came from. . . we are all story telling of our family history. . . add a chapter as to how you help save a forgotten resting place of loved ones. Thanks for taking the time to read my email. . . if you know or think you have family members buried in the Clapp Cemetery in Columbus, GA, please let me hear from you. We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. Sorry, I meant Hopewell !
I did not find New Hope cemetery, recent addition.
Thanks to Hopewell Methodist Church #2 in Pine Mountain for submitting a recent survey of their cemetery by Alice O'Conner. And thanks to Rev. Mike Ayers for coordinating the effort before leaving for another church assignment. If you find this survey helpful, email me or the list and I will forward your comments to the church, along with my own letter of thanks. I have also added Anderson Cemetery and Antioch Cemetery. These cemeteries were surveyed a while back and I was having formatting problems with them. Therefore, it took some time to get them online. I have misplaced the name of the person/persons who did these transcriptions. I would like to give credit to those individuals on the cemetery pages. Barbara Smallwood Stock Harris County GAGenWeb

Kemis, I recently acquired a copy of a book entitled "Columbus, Georgia 1827-1865". The history was compiled by John H. Martin and was published by Thomas Gilbert, Book Printer and Binder, Columbus, GA, in 1874. The book does not have an index but I will keep an eye out for mention of J. R. Clapp or the Clapp Cemetery. Clapp whose factory caused a village to be built later a cemetery. Recently the Clapp Cemetery has come up in some emails and it has sparked some interest in readers. If any of you has information of the Clapp Factory, Village and Cemetery, please share it with the me. thanks, kemis ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
I'm looking for information on this family -- 1850 Harris Co. Census shows Martha Stephens, head of household, age 50, with Hannah 19, Ceily A. 17, Margaret A. 15, John 12, and Martha 6, living next door to Glover Knight 29, Lavina B. 23, Samantha E. 3, and Cornelia B. 1. I believe that Lavina B. (Stevens/Stephens) Knight was the sister of my ancestor Sarah Stevens, who married Glover Knight's brother William Elexander Knight. I found two Stephens families in 1840 Harris County in proximity to William Knight (father of Glover and William Elexander), J. L. and G. Stephens -- but neither has daughters of the age of Sarah and Lavina. Any help appreciated! Georgia Fleming

Hello, June 9th, 2002 I have been researching the history of Pernell Truett and his son William P. Truett who settled in the Whitesville area of Harris County, Georgia. Purnell about 1827 and William P. about the middle of 1830. I found a reference in a book by The Daughters of the Confederacy stating they had placed a Confederate Marker on the grave of a Truett soldier in " The Old Truett Family Cemetery located one and a half miles north of Antioch Baptist Church. If anyone can help me find this cemetery I would be deeply grateful I would like to have a census of all buried and any inscriptions. My Great Great Grandfather was John Henry Truett b.12-23-1823 in Newton County, Ga. d.12-13-1901 in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama he was the son of William P. Truett any information on descendants of these Truett men would be welcomed. Regards, Howard O. Truitt [email protected]
Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie from another list: " wanted to remind everyone that most of the Georgia AHGP web sites have places where you can post your family or school reunion or get-together for free. These can be posted state-wide from the main page at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state/ or most of the individual counties have them. You can also post them nation-wide at http://genroots.net/reunions.html" kemis
Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie Hi all, In an attempt to verify the spelling of some names sent by another lister, I used my "Columbus Georgia 1828- 1978 book and I found a section in there on "Antebellum Manufacturing" It mentions J.R. Clapp whose factory caused a village to be built later a cemetery. Recently the Clapp Cemetery has come up in some emails and it has sparked some interest in readers. If any of you has information of the Clapp Factory, Village and Cemetery, please share it with the me. thanks, kemis

Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie Hi, I received this from another email list. I looked at it for GA, it's not a lot. But it's a start. Maybe you can find something for you. kemis From: Poor House Lady Sent: Saturday, June 01, 2002 7:51 AM Subject: POORHOUSE Information The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a lot of new material and have almost totally reorganized your page. That's because so many of you responded to our questions with a great deal of more specific information. When we used your photos or quotes we cited you as the source. But we want to thank the many of you who simply offered suggestions or clarifications. And that's the best way for a clearinghouse to work! Among other things, there is a new photo album and a timeline based on quoted excerpts from many of your local histories, etc. Here is a tip to help you follow all of this: FIRST there was a city almshouse in Poughkeepsie, then that almshouse became a county poorhouse, then the city & county divided up their poor relief system, and the county built a new county poorhouse in 1863 in Oak Summit near Millbrook in the town of Washington, and then the city of Poughkeepsie built a new City almshouse on the old site in 1868-69. Whew! IMPORTANT NOTE! If you want to see the latest information posted ... you will probably need to click REFRESH or RELOAD on every page to which you go that you may have visited recently. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on on your state on the table of states, and then if the county is there, click on it. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
