Did we really have a civil war battle or skirmish in Gainesville GA in 1862? In September 1862 there were conflicts in Gainesville VA (Virginia) Part of Second Manassas http://www.civilwarhome.com/manassasevents.htm Also in Oct 1862 there were the hangings of Unionists at Gainesville TX http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/GG/jig1.html The 23rd Indiana was around Gainesville Alabama but not until after Oct 1982. The 20th Indiana seems to have been in VA during Sept 1862. I would be glad to know of any conflicts in the Gainesville GA area for the web page. Donna Parrish

Donna, thank you for your response. I have just been in touch with the historical society and they have steered me toward other Gainesvilles. I simply jumped to the conclusion that your town was so near the Chickamauga conflict that it must have been there. Maybe we have both learned something now. Blessings, Orpha Vincent
