    3. Dear MFLP, Thanks for your reply, that Hall Co was formed in 1818 from the Cherokee cessions of 1817 & 1819, per your reference of the American Local History Network. And thanks for pointing out ALHN, I didn't know about it. But the Hall Co USGenWeb page states that Hall Co was cut out of Franklin and Jackson counties. Why the difference? Also on the Hall Co site, were three maps contributed by Dan Pierce, showing Land Districts, Land Lots, and Militia Districts. But none showed the Oliver Miller District (as in the 1820 census). I wonder where it was? 3. John, Some sources state that Hall was created in 1818 out of Cherokee Lands, Jackson County and Franklin County. As Donna pointed out, the infomation on the Secretary of State's website says that Hall was formed by Act of "December 15, 1818 and December 19, 1818" from "Cherokee cessions of July 8, 1817 and Feb. 27, 1819 - an original county." The opening paragraph from "The Families of Hall County, 1817-1849" by Robert S. Davis, Jr., 1991 Magnolia Press, gives the following information: "Hall County was created from Cherokee Indian lands by Act of Decemter 15, 1818. Four days later another act gave the couty land from Jackson and Franklin Counties to form what is today southeast Hall County. The rest of the county, the area taken directly from the Cherokee Indians, was divided into land lots and given to fortunate Georgians through the 1820 land lottery." ..."In addition to the above, Hall County was given addtional Cherokee Indian lands adjoining Habersham and Rabun Counties by Act of December 21, 1819." Apparently the Cherokee Lands were ceded July 8, 1817, then Hall County was formed from these lands on December 15, 1818. So technically, Hall County was originally formed only from Cherokee Lands. However, four days later, parts of Jackson County and Franklin County were given to Hall County, so effectively, Hall was formed in 1818 from Cherokee Lands, Jackson County and Franklin County. More land was ceded by the Cherokee on February 27, 1819 and given to Hall County on December 21, 1819. I don't have a copy of your original question, so I'm not sure exactly what you wanted to know, but I don't know anything about the Oliver Miller District. Are you saying that this district is listed on the 1820 census of Hall County? The districts shown on the map on the Hall Co. website are more recent district names. The names changed over time, but the GMD district numbers remained the same. If you know the GMD number for Oliver Miller's district, we can find it. 3. As often happened with the creation of Georgia counties, the borders with surrounding counties were changed. Hall County was created from the Cherokee cessions (mostly). There is a strip along the Southeastern edge of the current county contains land that was in the original Franklin County. This was in the Southern half of Franklin which was cut off to form Jackson County in 1796. If you look at the Hall County map at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahall/hcdists.jpg the area designated "Headrights" came from the Franklin/Jackson county area. It is very difficult to say that any Georgia county was "created from --- County" and be 100% accurate. A tract of land might have been part of five or six different counties over the years and a current county may contain land that came from many different counties/cessions.
