September 30, 1901 The man who saved the flag at the Soldiers' Home Monday during the conflagration at that place is James R. Stringer, formerly of Buford, who entered the Soldiers' Home on July 27th. Mr. Stringer was a member of the Forty-first Georgia regiment, which was in Stovall's brigade during the civil war. The flag he saved he now has. He carried it around with him and it was seen by hundreds of Atlantians today. Before thinking of his personal property before attempting to call the inmates of the building to a place of safety, Mr. Stringer thought of the Confederate flag, under which he passed numbers of times, everyday. He took it from its place over the door and carried it outside the building. There he secured it just before starting to the city, and he now has it at Thompson's hotel. Next day he said: "When the fire first started I first went to the front door and took down the flag we were all so proud of. After placing it where the smoke and cinders could not hurt it, I went back into the building and took out my bed and a few personal effects I had. After carrying these to where the flag was I again went back in and carried out George Lackey, of Atlanta, on my back. He was suffering with paralysis, and was in the room that had been named for Mrs. Joseph E. Brown. I want to say that, although Comrade Lackey has been in great pain, I have not heard him complain even once. "I then took out Robert Griffith, of Hall county, and carried him to a place of safety. By that time the fire had spread to such an extent that it was dangerous to go into the building again. Everybody had been taken out and we sat on the hill and watched the fire. "I was to say just one word more. The confederate soldiers of the south, of Georgia especially,a nd their friends will never forget what The Journal has done for us. We had splendid quarters last night, everybody was comfortable and we were given excellent food. For a time we did not know where we were going until it was announced that The Journal had rented a hotel for us." Surnames: Mccutcheonn, Black Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/4c.2ADE/2127.2.1 Message Board Post: Hi Debra, saw your posting and hope you can help me out or point me to someone who can. I am trying to locate a military district referenced on the 1820 Hall Co. GA census. It is the district of Capt Benjamin McCutcheon. However, it is indexed on ancestry.com as Benjamin Wheetchery district. Very hard to read. The transcriber did the best they could. I have no idea where this is located correlating to todays geographics. Appreciate any help you can provide. To give you the rest of the story. I am looking specifically for the location of one Garvin Black listed on the 1820 land lottery as a winner, residing in Rogers Dist, Jackson Co., GA. Now, Hall Co was formed from the western piece of Jackson Co in Dec of 1818. The oral oaths for the 1820 land lotteries were taken in 1819. (I do not know when exactly but would like to find out.) The actual drawing for the "1820" land lottery was taken from Oct -Dec 1820. Garvin Black is listed in Wheetchery 's Dist (misread - should be McCutchen) in 1820 Fed census. So, you see I am trying to determine if "Rogers" district of Jackson Co 1819 land lottery is/could be in fact the same as McCutchins (Wheetchery's) dist in 1820 fed census. Appreciate your help, Thank you, Scott

Do you know where I can find a map of the military districts used in the 1820 census? Garvin Black is enumerated on the 1820 Hall Co., GA census in Capt Benjamin McCutchen's district (it is indexed on ancestry.com as Capt Benj Wheetchery's district by mistake). I cannot find a reference for where it is. I noticed in your message you referenced that the party of interest lived next to the Alexanders and the Blacks. Could this be related to the family of James Black who married Temperance Alexander? Appreciate your help.
