The Lula Area Betterment Association is working on a new book about Lula's past. We are looking for pictures not published in other historical works. Especially pictures of people and places in the early history of the town. Scanned photos would be acceptable or a copy mailed. Please reply to [email protected] for further information. Thanks
Haven't seen any new postings. Just checking to see if the list is still up and running. Thanks, Jackie
MR. PIERCE, I FOR ONE AM VERY GRATEFUL TO SEE THAT SOMEONE HAD POSTED LISTS OF BOOKS ON GENEALOGY INFORMATION ON THIS WEBSITE. I HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY FINDING ANY INFORMATION ON VITAL STATIS- TICS IN HALL COUNTY IN THE EARLY 1800s. MARTHA [email protected]
Mr. Pierce, I have not INTENTIONALLY solicited business over the open mailing list. But my mother taught me it was good manners to answers notes. When I replied to Ms Jarrell I hit the reply button, and did not notice that the reply was going to the list and not her personally. For that mistake, I am very sorry. Once the message popped up on the list, I was upset myself as I had put my address and phone number out there for whomever to view and use. THAT is NOT something I would have done intentionally. I have PRIVATELY emailed people who are looking for marriage information, will, and cemetery information stating that those books (that I did not research and publish) are available. If this is considered a crime, I am sorry, but there are lots of folks whose families came through Hall County and moved on. If I can help them locate the records they need for their research, I am happy to do so. Thank you for your understanding Ms Becky Nix On Sat, 23 Nov 2002 18:31:59 -0800 "Two Run" <[email protected]> writes: Becky, Please don't be doing business selling your books over the mailing list. Neda, Thanks very much. This is my family. And getting to the other side would be very wonderful! But I am, indeed, having trouble reaching the site you have mentioned. Can you give me the complete address, starting w/ http... (or whatever it actually begins with?) Is it possible to put the entire address all on one line? Thanks very much. Kate W. My ggggrandfather, John Shaw, went to Georgia after his wife died in Duplin County, NC, after 1823. I believe he was claiming land in a land lottery. Would someone look in the cemetery inscription books and see if you find a tombstone for a John Shaw. John was born in Cumberland County, NC, the son of Colin Shaw and Sallie Marion McCraney. Thanks, Billie Carolyn Shaw Powell
Thanks to all those who responded to my message regarding information relative to parents on marriage licenses. It seems that every State is different. Edwina
The data you have is all that is available. Another reply mentioned that the 'license' and 'execution' were both recorded in the books and did not mention any other data. I doubt that early marriages required much of an application process either. If it did, none of those have been retained. The Probate Judges office has custody of the record books. I have one transcribed marriage license on the Forsyth website . http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/gagen/marrlic1.html This is basically what all the recordings are. In the old books they were written out by hand. Newer books are fill in the forms. Current books are photocopies of the license copied onto acid free pages that can be inserted into the books. The applications for the license would have contained the parents names etc. Very few of those survived. One Clerk in Forsyth County recorded some into part of Book E. They either changed clerks or he realized he was doing more work than necessary. An example of those pages are on the Historical Society of Forsyth County page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gafchs/mbke1.html Donna Parrish
Do you know if the marriage certificates show the parents of the bride and groom. This is what I have: Marriages Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia, Book C, Page 378, 10/13/1887 Wiley B. Bagwell---Lizzie Hughes. and Marriages Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia, Book C, Page 234, 12/27/1884 W. B. Bagwell--Mattie Jones (I think it should be Mattie James) However, if the certificates for that time period are not available, nor don't show the parent's names hey are not much help to me. Will appreciate hearing from you. I would not normally use information found on the list for this purpose. I live in Hall County. Last year a partner and I compiled an index of the Hall County Marriage records from 1819 to 1900. (The county was organized in December 1818, so January 1819 were the earliest marriages.) The certificates for the early marriages no longer exist unless the descendants of the couple have one. The county merely recorded the information. I believe they charge $10.00 for a copy of each record, BUT for the small price of $35.00 plus $3.00 postage, I can send you a hardbound book that contains all 7,000+ marriages that took place during that time period. The index is by groom and bride; contains the book, page and date that the marriage was recorded. Also another Hall County researcher has just completed a complete transcription of early wills. Not an abstract, but a transcription! It is indexed and a fine asset to anyone's collection. Let me know if you want more information or want either book. Thanks and happy hunting. P. S. Edwina, Marriage licenses and certificates in Georgia do not show the parents name. Here is all that is on them: 1) The license gives the name of the groom, name of the bride, the name of the person issuing the license and the date issued. 2) The certification usually gives the name of the bride and groom (but not always) , the name of the person performing the marriage and the date solomnized. Both license and certification are included together on a single document. Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: Edwina B. I tried a Google search and found the Hall County Gov web site. Several departments have email addresses. Maybe you can do it that way. I've managed it on line in at least a few states. On the Hall Co gov site there are many links, including marriage licenses and probate dept, etc. good luck (or maybe it should be "goog" luck?" ron On Fri, 22 Nov 2002 10:37:41 EST [email protected] wrote: > I tried calling the Probate Court to determine > if this was something that > could be done by mail and the cost. Peter try the following, then click on Volunteers. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state/ Also http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/ Someone sent me some inormation they copied from the GA Archives, marriage records books. I have not tried to order the actual certificates. Kept thinking I would be traveling that way. Incidentally, I have a James Keller Hyde that married Ethel Elizabeth Bagwell. I think Ethel was born in Gainesville, Hall Co., GA, but married in Sylacauga, Talladega CO., AL I am searching AL and GA for BAGWELL, OWEN, YARBROUGH in AL. I tried calling the Probate Court to determine if this was something that could be done by mail and the cost. I was given different phone numbers than the one I had and a different mailing address. They apparently have one of those new phone systems. I reached 4 voice mails, but no human.beings. If someone on the list lives in Hall County, maybe you could find this out. Donna
