Kenneth, Jackie got this info from a book at the Hall County Library. It is a really good book. It is of the whole State of Georgia. I think one of the Genealogy Societies may have it for sale. I will try to find out for you. 1864 Census for the Re-Organization of the Georgia Militia, compiled and abstracted by Nancy J. Cornell
Vicky, I read somewhere that the state of Georgia conducted censuses during the Civil War. They were of males of military age. This is the first one I have ever seen! Where can we check for the censuses for other counties? I am sure there are many others that could use this in their Georgia genealogical research. My parent's ancestors lived in Hall, Jackson, Clarke, and other north Georgia counties. Thanks, Ken Whitehead, Douglasville, GA Vicky J Chambers wrote: > I have just added to my Hall County AHGP site the 1864 Hall County Militia Census. Please come by and have a look. Seeking biographical information on Mathew/Matthew Fleming Stephenson, b ca 1802 VA, and his son-in-law, Dr. John Wills, b ca 1819 PA or MD. They were Masons and lodge brothers at Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, in 1854, and both eventually moved to Gainesville, Hall County. Stephenson was assayer at the Dahlonega Branch Mint from around 1850-1855. Reportedly, in Mark Twain's book "The Gilded Age", he is credited as the originator of the phrase "Thar's gold in them thar hills". Wills married Susan A. Stephenson in 1858 at Dahlonega. Their family appears in Hall Co 1860-70-80 censuses, and in the early 1880's moved to either Kaufman Co TX or neighboring Dallas County. The censuses have been pretty well picked clean for both the Wills and Stephenson families. Mathew's wife was Sarah S. b ca 1818 TN, children were 1. Virginia E. Stephenson, b ca 1838 GA (m John C. C. Lawrence); 2. Susan A. Stephenson, b 1839 GA; 3. Jane Stephenson, b ca 1843 GA; 4. Robert S. Stephenson, b ca 1845 GA. Dr. John Wills was regimental surgeon for the 43rd Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. He apparently had two children, Walter and Callie, by a first marriage: 1. Walter S. Wills, b ca 1846 TN. Pvt in Co B, 11th GA Cav. Raised family at Gainesville. (Two sons: John K. b ca 1874, William W. b ca 1878.) 2. Callie Wills, b ca 1848 TN. Children of Dr. John and Susan: 1. John C. Wills, b ca 1859 2. David Wills, b Mar 1861 3. Robert B. Wills, b Jun 1863, m Frances E. "Fannie" Rublee 4. Olive Wills, b Mar 1866, m Charles A. Rublee 5. William Clark Wills, b ca 1867 6. May Wills, b ca 1869, probably married Dr. Albert H. Freeman 7. Mathew Stephenson Wills, b Jun 1871 8. Henry C. Wills, [b Aug 1873? Age 6 in 1880.] 9. Peter L. Wills, b Sep 1877 10. Joseph Boone Wills, b ca 1880 11. Jay Wills, b Mar 1882 -------- Any biographical info on either Stephenson or Wills would be very much appreciated. Andy Anderson

I am trying to find the parents of Nancy DOBBS,born 1815 in Georgia, died in Cobb Co GA 1881. Nancy DOBBS married William BARKER from Maine and was living in Cobb Co in 1860. It looks like several DOBBS families lived in Gwinnett & Hall counties in the early 1800's and Nancy DOBBS may have been from one of these families. I'm trying to connect the Hanes and Brown families. On pg. 177 of the 1840 Hall Co., GA census appears James Haynes, next door is a Mr. Ingram, next is Isaac Haynes, then John Haynes and William Haynes. I believe John and William Hanes/Haynes to be brothers. They remain in Hall Co. for the 1850 census and are both in Randolph Co., AL for the 1860 census. 1870 & 1880 both find them in Cleburne Co., AL. John's son John Wesley Hanes married Margaret Brown 7-20-1852 in Hall Co. There was a marriage for a William L. Brown to Franey Hanes 2-5-1854. I believe Franey was a daughter of William Hanes. Were Margaret Brown and William L. Brown siblings? Were they children of Stephen Brown? Stephen had a female M. and a male W. in the household in 1850 Hall Co. Thank you for any assistance on these families. Terry Jackson

His parents were Caleb OBRIANT and Jessey? (possibly Brown) from S.C. He had 2 brothers, one was named James and a sister Lucy that married a CORBIN. Joseph Obriant was in the civil war and enlisted in Gilmer Co. He married a Jane Charles in Gilmer co in 1850-2, I don't have that record in front of me right now. He served the Confederacy, desserted, was put back in service. I can't find him on a pension roll though. He and Jane had several children. They lived in Gilmer co. and later in Jackson and Hall Co. His daughter Susan Melinda married a Thomas Gideon SHOCKLEYand they lived in Jackson and Hall Co. until the Run in Ok territory, then they went to Willow View-Lexington area of Ok. Joseph's children were known as BRYANT.-------I have found Caleb OBRIANT on the census for Rabun Co. Forsythe and Gilmer Co. Does anyone know of a connection to these families? Any help would be appreciated. Joyce _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
