I know the names of Hugh Tatum's (b. 1782) brothers and sisters: John W., Edward b. 1780, William b. 1783and Mary b. 1799, and his father was John Tatum. None of Hugh's children were named James, but his oldest, Solomon was born in 1806, the next one was Parthena born 1808, then William born 1810, John 1814, Horatio 1821, and an unknown son born 1826. Some of their children were named James, but the ages would be wrong for any connection. I wouldn't be surprised if your James and my Hugh Tatum were cousins, but I can't confirm any real connection. Hugh was born in NC and moved to Pendleton District SC. Wish I was more help.
