We also have a responsibility to protect people's privacy. Recently, I discovered a man (whom I do not know) had somehow obtained some of the family data I had gathered and posted it on a Genforum site. This data included living people who he had listed as deceased. I e-mailed the man, asked him where he got my data, why he did not ask my permission to post it, and asked him to kindly remove it to protect people's privacy. He refused to do this and refused to divulge his source. I then e-mailed Genforum, but have never received a reply. I have also found some of my data on other websites, used without permission and including living people. I know many other people who have had the same experience. It's amazing to me how our information floats around. The internet has become a double edged sword. On the one hand, we have access to more and more valuable records and can make connections with far flung cousins. On the other side, some people do not understand other's right to privacy and the need to ask permission before using data. I am more and more cautious about giving information to anyone, which is sad, and I will not give any information past my great grandparents. Hazel Colburn
