Sadly, it has been announced that Mrs. Ellene Franklin Gowder died on Tuesday, July 4th, while picking blackberries in her garden in Batesville. She was 91 years old. She was the daughter of Paulus and Effie Sutton Franklin and the widow of George A. Gowder. I am sure that many of you Habersham County list subscribers know of her extensive research in progress about the history of the Batesville community. A teacher for 40 years in the Habersham/White counties school systems, she co-authored the book "Once Upon A Time: Schools of Habersham County, Georgia." Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Batesville.
