    2. Dan Erwin
    3. There are two cemeteries. Old Clarkesville Cemetery is downtown and most of the graves date back to the 1800s many of the graves date back to the 1800s. Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery is about a mile south and most of the graves are in the early 1900s up to the present. I live in Habersham County and have visited both cemeteries numerous times. I will be happy to try to answer any specific questions. 2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Someone just told me: "I loved the info on the Old Clarkesville Cemetery. I think this is the one across the street from the Library. (a spooky place)" So it sounds like there are totally different cemeteries. Now I'm very curious about the "old Clarkesville" one. Maybe we could get some photos from it. Does anyone know who keeps it up? Or if there is a listing for it. Thanks. Virginia

    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/habersham/cemetery.html Denise just posted a very helpful listing with very interesting details about those buried in what is described as "Old Clarkesville Cemetery". J.C. Southerland has been so gracious in taking photos of Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery on US 441. I need your help in figuring out if there are TWO Cemeteries or if the Memorial Cemetery is the same thing as the "Old Clarkesville". If someone who lives in the area, or who is familiar with the area, could help explain this, I'd sure appreciate it! I don't think I have all of Mr. Southerland's photos on-line, but am working on it!

    3. Jeff Davis-Habersham County GaArchives Biographies.....Grant, James Rusk 1876 - living in 1913 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Joy Fisher sdgenweb@yahoo.com October 15, 2004, 7:40 pm Author: William Harden p. 729-730 JAMES RUSK GRANT. An eminently useful and highly esteemed citizen of Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis county, James Rusk Grant is an able representative of the legal fraternity, as a lawyer meeting with pronounced success. A native of Georgia, he was born, March 30, 1876, in Clarkesville, Habersham county, a son of W. D. and Samantha J. (Holland) Grant, natives of South Carolina, and now residents of Clarkesville, Georgia. His father served throughout the Civil war as a private in the Twenty-fourth Georgia regiment, taking part in many engagements. Receiving his preliminary education in Clarkesville, James Rusk Grant subsequently continued his studies one term at Clemson College, South Carolina. Beginning then to read law in his native town with Hon. J. C. Edwards, he applied himself diligently to his studies, making such progress that in March, 1898, he was admitted to the bar by Judge J. J. Kimsey, passing a good examination. After practicing his profession a short time in Clarkesville, Mr. Grant opened a law office at Clayton, Georgia, where he remained ten years, building up an excellent practice. In January, 1909, Mr. Grant located at Hazlehurst, and is here meeting with equally as good fortune, his legal skill and ability being recognized, and that it is appreciated is shown by his large and lucrative clientele. He has a large general practice, and has served as solicitor in both the county court and the city court. During the Spanish-American war, Mr. Grant served as a soldier in Company G, Second Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Active and public-spirited, he takes great interest in the affairs of town, county and state, and is ever willing to support all enterprises and projects for the benefit of the public. Mr. Grant married, February 10, 1901, Mary T. Reynolds, a daughter of John A. Reynolds, editor of the Clayton Tribune. Her mother, whose maiden name was Jane Jackson, is a daughter of Rev. Jasper C. Jackson, a noted mountain missionary Baptist preacher, who served in the Confederate army during the Civil war. Four children have blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Grant, namely: Ellen, Willie J., Jesse, and James Rusk, Jr., a bright little fellow, born in 1910. 3. Seek futher info on a Samuel Bowden Duncan who was first found in Campbell County, Georgia. In 1880 census he was a child of four years. This Samuel married Ora Seleta Peacock. Later that appear in Habersham County, Ga. In fact this couple may well have actually married in Habersham County. I seek names of their children. One was that of Cromer Dewey Duncan b. 1899 in same county. His wife Bessie Mae Gabrels was one of my great-grand Aunts. I approach with caution as I realize that some of their children may still be living there in Habersham County. I am related to this line via the marriage of Cromer Dewey Duncan and his wife, Bessie Mae Gabrels. O all my Habersham connections I have not yet persued the Duncan line, until now. Any futher info on them greatly appreciated. Judy V. Mason

Kiblinger [mailto:cak1959@bellsouth.net] Sent: Monday, September 06, 2004 12:30 PM To: lab@boone.net Subject: Benjamin Cordell / Caudel Hello, I am looking for the. burial place of Benjamin Cordell. On the GA Land Lottery 1827 he is listed as Rev. Sol. On the 1820 Habersham Co. census he is listed as Benjamin Cordell, and on the 1830 census he is listed as Benjamin Caudel. Ben & his wife Sarah joined the Providence Baptist Church in 1828. Sarah, along with other family members, is shown as leaving the church in 1835. Ben is not named with the group leaving. This leads me to believe that he died between 1830 & 1835. His name is not listed at the on-line site of Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. Can you provide any tips about searching for his final resting place? Thank You very much for any help. Cordell Akins Kiblinger

    3. Marc, Scroll down to Libraries on this Resources page for the Habersham County GAGenWeb site http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahaber2/resources.htm The resources I have for Habersham County marriages do not include 1854 but if you already know the date and location of the marriage, I would suggest writing to the Probate Court, the Library and/or the Historical Society to request a copy of the marriage license. Contact information for all of these is on the page linked above. Good Luck!
