It seems like we might have communicated long ago on the Greers and we both were at a standstill (if not, I'm sorry that I might be mistaking you for someone else). Anyway, Grizella or "Grisally" Greer, born 1794 in SC, was married to Ashael "Asa" Jordan, born 1795 in GA, on 5/17/1821 in Habersham County, GA. I haven't found Grisally's parents yet and am wondering if she could be the daughter of your Richard. The Jordans migrated up to Bradley and Rhea Counties in TN, which are neighbor counties to Bledsoe. I'd like to exchange info with you in hopes that we are on the same line. Asa and Grisally are my 4th Great Grandparents on my Mother's side.

It was listed as #281, Eighteenth District, First Sections. Her residence is listed as Whitehead's, Habersham County and she is listed as a widow. I don't know if there is any connection or not but could be related. Also, in Jackson County, Georgia I found a Hannah Walker married to John Thomas on 7 Oct 1808. Although the dates for this Hannah don't quite match with the ones on the census record, it might be worth checking out. I hope you will be able to find out something about James B. Thomas's parents. - Sue -

    1. Cemetery Database
    2. Linda Barton
    3. In regard to the cemetery database donated by Sue Thompson, it has come to my attention that there are date errors on the webpages. We have decided this occurred when changing the format of the spreadsheet to webpages and I have found what the errors are. I am currently checking all entries and will upload each page as it is finished. The Latest Update Date at the bottom of each page of the database is currently 1/09/2005 - this date will change on each page as it is corrected and reloaded. This is going to take a little time, so please be patient with me - I'll let the list know when the corrections are complete and will post a message on the website. This is a wonderful resource and I apologize for this glitch but I am working to correct it. Linda Blum-Barton CC, Habersham County, GAGenWeb

    1. New Information on Web
    2. Linda Barton
    3. I have updated the Habersham County GAGenWeb site to include a large database donated by Sue Thompson which was created from records used to create the cemetery book. Thank you Sue! The information covers 45 webpages and is sorted by Surname, then given name. It should be included by the search engine within 10 days or so. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahaber2/cemdb/cemdb.htm Sue has also shared a history of the area written in the early 1900's but never published by Miss Addie Bass. This is accessed through this page and is a very interesting read! http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahaber2/history/basshistind.htm I have added the Habersham County section of "Historical Collections of Georgia" written in 1854 by Rev. George White. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahaber2/history/whitehistory.htm I have also added a link on the military page to a transcription by Suzanne Forte, CC of Jasper County, GAGenWeb of "Soldiers of the Great War" - Listing of Georgia Soldiers who Died in World War I. The page is accessed from here http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahaber2/military/military.htm I hope you find this information helpful & interesting and as always, if you have anything you are interested in sharing with others, please let me know. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3c.2ADE/8.21.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Pat was the one that gave the info that Margaret & Hannah MIGHT have been sisters. I correct myself. I shouldn't have said they WERE sisters. I was at the library this morning and found some interesting info on property in Habersham County. On every Hab Co census beginning in 1840, Margaret & Hannah are living in the same district of Habersham County. In 1851, Hannah was granted acreage on the Middle Broad River and in November of that year Vincent Henderson was granted acreage on the waters of the North Broad River. Today this property would be within 10-15 miles of each other. I don't know if we will ever know if they were indeed sisters but there's some connection somewhere. Margaret bore J.B. Thomas out of wedlock in 1830 and married Vincent Henderson in 1834 in Habersham County. I find it hard to believe that she was not living in the household of an older relative when he was born. I suppose we'll never know unless we can uncover a will that names both Margaret and Hannah as heirs. Will keep you posted on my findings.

My grandmother was Violet Thomas, daughter of Henry Louis Thomas, son of James Bartow Thomas, Jr., son of James Bartow Thomas, Sr. whose mother was Margaret Welch. Margaret bore JB, Sr. out of wedlock and gave him the surname Thomas. He was born in 1831 and in 1834 Margaret married Vincent Henderson in Habersham Co, GA. Hannah Thomas was Margaret's sister. Their maiden name was Welch and on every census beginning in 1840, Margaret & Hannah live in close proximity to each other. Hannah was the head of household beginning on the 1840 census all the way to 1870 when she was living in Darius Echols' household as his wife. My cousin Pat & I are desperately trying to find out why Margaret gave her son the surname Thomas. We thought maybe Hannah was married to a Thomas and Margaret lived with them and gave JB the Thomas surname. Any leads you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    3. A quick on-line search failed to turn up any of these people in Georgia or Tennessee in 1930. A book I have, The Heritage of Habersham County, Georgia 1817-2000, has a Jacob Canup family history that only goes into the mid-19th century, but its author might know about your Mattie Canup. The author is George W. Canup, 2340 Habersham Drive, Marietta, Georgia 30064. W.
