Herbert and Nancy Kinsey compiled a book, Early Genealogical and Historical Records of Habersham County, Georgia. I do not know when it was published. Does any one know how to get a copy of this book? Sibyl Slavin [email protected]
Sadly, it has been announced that Mrs. Ellene Franklin Gowder died on Tuesday, July 4th, while picking blackberries in her garden in Batesville. She was 91 years old. She was the daughter of Paulus and Effie Sutton Franklin and the widow of George A. Gowder. I am sure that many of you Habersham County list subscribers know of her extensive research in progress about the history of the Batesville community. A teacher for 40 years in the Habersham/White counties school systems, she co-authored the book "Once Upon A Time: Schools of Habersham County, Georgia." Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Batesville. Would the area of Present day Banks and Franklin Cos county line near Nails Creek Bapt Ch qualify me to submit a article as a pioneer descendant of Habersham Co? Thanks Buddy Pritchett Thomasville NC
The deadline for the Heritage Book has been extended to August 31. The book committee met on Thursday night to review the number of family histories and book orders received. Although we need more family histories to be submitted, the orders for books are below the publishers minimum for even printing the book. Habersham County originally encompassed Banks, Rabun, Lumpkin, Stephens and White counties and parts of Franklin and Jackson. If your ancestors were in Habersham County prior to 1850, they were pioneers, and you are entitled to submitting an additional 500 word article on the family for a total of 1000 words at no cost. Additional words are 10 cents each. Each article submitted is entitled to one photo FREE. Photos will be printed 2-1/2" wide (one column) and 1-3/4" high. (Information is outlined in the brochure.) A self-addressed, stamped envelope should be included in submitted articles with pictures. If you are interested in submitting an article and/or ordering a book, please send me your snail-mail address, and I will mail you a brochure of the guidelines. If you are interested in purchasing a book, the cost is $48.69 picked up in Habersham County or $52.69 (which includes $4.00 for shipping). Book orders with checks should be sent to: Habersham County Heritage Book P.O. Box 2643 Clarkesville, GA 30523 There will be no surplus copies printed. Only the number of pre-paid orders for books will be printed. So, if you want a book, the order must be submitted by the deadline of August 31. Habersham County was such an important center in early Georgia history, we need to have this area documented for future generations of its decendants to read and appreciate their heritage. Such a research tool is vital for future genealogists. Lynne in the beautiful northeast GA mountains [email protected]
Hi Good to hear from you and happy for you that you are going to Ga. I am in northwest SC. Batesville,Habersham co.Ga. has a" general store",which has been made into a small restaurant . The Providence Baptist church and cem.is almost directly accross from the store. There are a few houses most are rural home. This is a rural area. There is a small store on the hwy going toward Laprades.Be sure to go to Laprades and check out the old picture behind the desk in the office of the gift shop.Does anyone know who is in the picture? You may want to call/visit Ed Stamey and Ellene Gowder for any information on Shelton Fields. Also try to contact the local genealogy group and call the Clarkesville library(about 15 miles from Batesville) to see if they have information on the Sheltons. Maybe someone can give you information on the hunting lodge near Shelton Fields. later Gay
