Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Habersham/997 Surname: Merritt, Adams, Underwood, Dunagan, Boyd, Brackett ------------------------- I am descended from James Merritt b c1800 m. Lucinda Adams and would like to find further information for these families. Known children: Nancy B. Jeptha F. ( this is my line) m. Delilah Underwood lived in Habersham/White Co, GA Willaim A. James J. Andrew R. Alfred Stephen R. Lucinda Jane Polly/Mary Sarah I noticed you had Jeptha with middle name Foster. Do you know the origin of the name. I thought it possibly a link to his father, James's parents/grandps. I know the middle name for Andrew R(eid) comes from parents of Lucinda Adams/James bc1760 and Nancy Anne Reid/Reed bc1765(d/o Nathaniel Reed bc1745 & Elizabeth ?unk). I have James Adams with father James Adams,Sr. b c1740/Caswell Co, NC/died GA. Delilah Underwoods's parents were Joseph Underwod c1799 and Macariah Dunnagan bc1808. I am posting records that I have found online for the Merritts. I don't know the relation to James Merritt's family. However, some records indicate a Stephen Merritt in SC census. This could be a possibly connection to James Merritt because he named a son Stephen. Misc. 1. Revolutionary War
    2. Can anyone give me any suggestions on sources for information on migration into the Habersham County geographic area after the Revolutionary War? The specific family I am researching involves Jane/Jean/Eugenia Traill West, the widow of Benjamin West. Benjamin West was killed by Tories in the Ninety-Six area in South Carolina during the last months of the Revolutionary War. Their son James West was married to Mary Chadwick. James West (the son) was also a Revolutionary War soldier. After coming to Georgia, James and Mary's son James West was married to Eunice Bowen. Both James Wests were active in the Baptist Church (I do not know a specific congregation at this time, but have been told that there are copies of minutes from their congregation in the DAR Library in the General Records Collection for Georgia on the open shelf.) Collaterally, James West married to Mary Chadwick, was the brother of Benjamin West. This Benjamin West was married to Nancy______ 12 June 1788 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He died in Hall County, GA 25 November 1842. Nancy West's application for a pension as a widow of a Revolutionary soldier was located by a private researcher in the 1930s in Habersham County records. 2. Dear Group, Thought I would throw this your way in the event that someone as myself is interested and connected to this church as I am through the LaPrades. When I visited the church last summer, I spoke with a kind woman who showed me the inside of the church upon request. I also found out from her the the original structure of the church had burned down. She was unable to tell me when or give me an approximate year as to when this happened. Was wonering if anyone has any of this information, and if not is anyone out there, who might happen to live in the area (I live in New York City) go to the church or the archives in Georgia to find out. Maybe it was printed in a newspaper of some sort as to why the church burned down, who was responsible, what year etc.... Hoping for a response, Marc E. Shelton Email: [email protected]
