Three or four years ago I posted this series of chapters of Habersham County history written by Miss Addie Bass somewhere in the early to mid 1900s. Miss Bass was a lifelong resident of Habersham County and Clarkesville. These memoirs are written much like a diary and contain a wealth of information on Clarkesville and its residents from the beginning of its settlement. I will be reposting these chapters one at a time over the next few weeks. If you are researching the Habersham/Clarkesville area, I think you will find them very helpful. Some members of the family lived and were buried in Rabun Co., but I noticed a Merietta Smith was buried at Level Grove Baptist Church in Habersham Co., Ga. Camp Creek and Wolf Creek Cemteries have a great many ancestors and some Smith's that I cannot find the connection to. I haven't done any research in this county as yet - I had hoped to find the parents of Henry in Rabun - but haven't yet. Henry Smith b. 10/13/1832 in Georgia married Elizabeth Dockins Henry and Elizabeth had the following children: Calvin "Cicero", George L., Amanda "Mandy", John, Gus, Josephine, Merietta, Genelia Serpetia, James "Jim" Henry, and Sarah Melvina. Merietta Smith b. 6/5/1869 died in White Co., Georgia. She married John Pinckney Harvey in Rabun Co., Ga. John and Merietta are both buried in Level Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Francis J Dover b 1760 NC, a Rev War Soldier who was in Habersham Co, GA just prior to 1820 census, was married to a "Polly" Posey. He was located very near the Kings Mountain Battleground in SC after the war prior to his relocating in Pendleton Dist, SC before 1800. I wonder if anyone has information on some special draw that enticed people to move from Georgia to Arkansas between 1850 and 1860. Did authorities open up Indian to settlement in Arkansas at that time, what was the draw? My ggrandfather Doctor Jesse R (Richardson) Kelly was born 1833 Habersham County, GA; his father Hiram moved to Arkansas 1855 and Jesse followed in 1859. We know that Jesse graduated from the Atlanta Medical School in 1859, the reason for his delay in joining his father. They settled first around Hindsville, Arkansas. On the Habersham Co. Census for 1860, I find Mary Miles, Abner Magness, Andrew Miles, John Miles, J. M. Miles. Martha Hames married John Miles. Sarah or Sally Deal married J. M. Miles and then George Ivester. Andrew Miles relocated to Texas where several of his sons married Whisenant girls. You list several of these surnames,and I'm wondering if any of this looks familiar.
