I find the CD's of family tree's help point you in a direction but you MUST document your line. Please don't take the info. at face value. They are only as good as the researcher. Personally I try to find Primary Documentation on my direct lines. I don't settle for things copied from books or CD's. I use those sources as guidelines but you won't believe the error's I have found in these records. It takes more effort to order documents and records but it's worth it, believe me. The Software Program, Master Genealogist, is excellent and demands that you source your information. I use it for the final entry of documented family records. I use Family Tree Maker to put the info. in from all sources. This way I can keep them apart. Go the the Ancestry Site and get into the Genealogy Lessons area.
