    1. [GAGWINNE] BREWER
    2. Bill Hatchell
    3. Seeking help me in identifying my George W. Brewer, born August 1844 in GA? He enlisted in the Georgia 35th at Lawrenceville, GA in 1861 along with three other Brewer men: John B., Joseph A. and William H. Brewer, all or some of whom might have been brothers or cousins. My George lost a leg in the war and settled in Birmingham, AL after the war and died there about 1889. He named a daughter Mary Margaret Brewer, possibly after his mother or grandmother. He married Disa Townley of Townley, AL and there was a connection to a family by the name of Hinton.

    1. [GAGWINNE] Book - History of Gwinnett, and John F. Martin, James M. Allen, James C. Martin
    2. Brenda Hawkins
    3. Folks, Still trying to find the Martin ancestors and relatives of my Allen Martin who married Mary Ann Tumlin (daughter of William Tumlin) and was living in Gwinnett in 1830, and possibly through 1840. Just read a nice account of the Early Settlers of Gwinnett and the Creek Indian War of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett Co., GA, http://patsabin.com/gwinnett/history.htm, taken from the History of Gwinnett County, Georgia 1818-1943, by J. C. Flanigan, and note that there's a John F. Martin listed as one of the early settlers, and that James C. Martin and James M. Allen died while engaged in the Creek Indian War. And since family lore suggests that my Allen's mother might have had the maiden name of Allen (hence Allen Martin's name), I'm also interested in the James M. Allen listed there. Does anyone know anything of these families? Were John F. Martin and James C. Martin related? Can anyone who has the Gwinnett History book tell me if more is mentioned about these people? Thanks very much, Brenda ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PS: Which is more fun - Genealogy or M&M's? 2. Greg And Winnette
    3. Phillip, As long as you do not copy the entire book or use the formatting of the book you will do fine. Public records cannot be copyrighted, but, the format presented by the Historical Society can and is. The entire book could never be scanned and used, but, in piece mill you are not harming anyone. For instance my asking you for the Bass and Parker marriages from the book, is perfectly acceptable. You can type that info into an email, but, you cannot scan the entire page. 1. FW: [GAGWINNE] HOG MOUNTAIN FAMILIES
    2. Max Smith
    3. Below is a portion of an article taken from The Atlanta Journal and Constitution Magazine, April 9, 1967. The article was written by Reuben Charles Moore. This tells a little bit more about Hog Mountain. I do have the entire article if someone is interested. Max "...At the June term of court in Gwinnett County in 1821, my great-grandfather Shadrack Bogan along with John Winn and Patrick L. Dunlap were ordered to lay out and mark a road, the nearest and best way from the Gwinnett courthouse toward the ... [2 unreadable lines] ... Fields were appointed as commissioners to view the ground and mark a road the nearest and best way from Mathew McRight's ferry on the Chattahoochee to the Hog Mountain. At the September term of court, 1831, it was ordered that the petition to open a road from McAdam's ford in Harkness' field on the Chattahoochee River to Sugar Hill at Samuel Born's be accepted, provided the petitioners will keep the road in repair, and that Thomas McAdams, Thomas Rutherford and Thompson Moore be appointed commissioners to lay off the road. Thompson Moore was the father of my great-grandfather Arbin Moore. The road which Shadrack Bogan laid out passed by his tavern, the Hog Mountain House, and was named the Bogan Road which it still is until this day. The inferior court had jurisdiction over taverns and the rates were fixed by the court. These were typical: Single meal, each.............................................. .37 Persons traveling in public conveyances, each meal............. .50 Man or woman per day.......................................................... 1.25 Man and horse per night......................................................... 1.50 Horse, per day................................................ .75 Board, man per week........................................ 5.00 Board, horse per week..................................... 3.00 Board, man per month...................................... 15.00 Board, horse per month................................... 10.00 Board, Man per year...................................... 150.00 I am told that the men who laid out the Peachtree Road were paid $150 for their work and returned to the Hog Mountain House and blew in on a Saturday night dance. William Nesbit was "boss" and his buddies John Young, Lewis Lawley, and a Negro man did the work. Hiram Williams and Gustin Young drove the cart and served on picket duty as the Indians were not to be trusted. Old John Rogers, the ancestor of our late and beloved Will Rogers, had some political pull and the road was extended from Hog Mountain through John Rogers' property in Old Suwanee Town and thence to the new fort at Standing Peachtree, now Bolton, Ga...." My 3rd great grandparents were Lewis and Margaret (JENKINS) BUREL of a place called HOG MOUNTAIN. Can anyone tell me anything about that area and where it got that name? Also about the BUREL families who lived there? Thank you. Vonda Lou BELLUSO
