    1. Martins in Georgia?
    2. Brenda Hawkins
    3. Martin Descendants: Looking for any living male MARTIN who had Martin ancestors in or near the areas of Gwinnett, Hall, Forsyth, Cass, Bartow, Floyd or Cherokee counties in Georgia to participate in a DNA Study. My Brickwall Martin ancestor was Allen Martin, b. abt 1800 in GA. He was in Gwinnett Co., in 1830, but had moved to Cass by 1850 and lived out his life in Cass/Bartow as did most of his children and grandchildren. After extensive research, I still have not been able to learn who his parents or siblings were and have not been able to tie him to any other Martin line in the area. One of Allen's sons (James M. Martin) moved to Arkansas shortly before 1850 and was found living with another young Martin male - William A. Martin - who I suspect was a descendant of the Martins from Hall Co., GA. The documents of Allen Martin's Final Estate in 1876 do not mention a William A. Martin as an heir so I know he was not a brother to my James, and I have tracked this William who was still living in 1880. Because my James was living with this William Martin, I suspect maybe my Martins may be connected somehow to those of Hall Co., GA. Then, after studying many of the World War I Draft Registration Cards that are now viewable online for the Martins who were still in the Bartow/Floyd County areas in the early 1900s, I discovered that nearly all of my own Martin descendants reported having blue eyes and black hair - even after 2-3 generations of influence by the genes of their mothers and grandmothers. Checking some of the descendants of other Martin lines in the area showed that one in particular also seemed to have predominantly blue eyes and "dark" hair. That line is of Moses Martin and Delilah Bennett. Even though the coincidence of blue eyes and black/dark hair is intriguing, I know that this doesn't prove anything and so am now trying to generate interest in as many Martin descendants from the Northwest area of Georgia as possible in participating in a DNA Study. There is already one in progress on Family Tree DNA, which offers a reduced rate to participants, and currently targets several different Martin lines from many areas of the USA and UK. I have written for more information about joining this group. Please contact me if you are interested in participating. This Martin DNA Study is actually open to any Martin descendants from any area, and of any race, and since I have no clue where my Martin family came from (GA? SC? VA? Germany? England? Ireland?), they could end up connecting to anyone. Your participation may help me connect my own Martin group, but could also prove very valuable to you in making connections to other Martins - even if they don't connect to mine. Would you like to help? Thank you!! Surnames: Black, Bailey, McCracken Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Jc.2ADI/68.2 Message Board Post: I am interested in the Blacks who were living in Hall and Forsyth Cos in Ga. My husbands g-grandfather and family came to Tx in 1880s. His name was Joseph Albert Black born in Ga in 1848. His children were born in Ga. Wife was Ada Francis Sikes nee Bailey a widow. There is a Joseph Black on the Hall Co.,Ga census of 1860 about the right age in the household of an Andrew Black, 24 yrs. Maybe brother or cousin? 1850 census of Forsyth Co., Ga there is a Joseph Black 67yrs, and a James Black 44yrs. Both have a son named Joseph but wrong ages. 1850 in Campbell Co., there is a Joseph Black age 27 with young children. On the death citificate of Joseph Albert Black (1848-1915) he was Joseph Albert Black, jr. Joseph and Ada are buried in Corpus Christi, TX in Nueces Co. The interesting thing about them is that they named their first child a girl Thomas. She was called Tommy. Since you have Black family in those Counties I hoped that you would know something about these ! people. I thank you for your consideration, Jean Black

    1. Gilbert/Strickland
    2. Carolyn Sue Howard
    3. My surname interests in Gwinnett Co., GA are Gilbert and Strickland. My great, great grandfather was William Gilbert, born around 1753/1758, possible in Virginia or NC. He married Tamar or Tamer Strickland, second oldest daughter of Jacob Strickland and Priscilla Taylor or Young Strickland. Any information I could gain on either William or Tamar would be very much appreciated. I believe William died around 1828 and that Tamar left Gwinnett Co. in 1830 and went to Cobb Co., GA, where one of their daughters lived. Tamar had one child still at home - my great grandfather, William Gilbert, Jr. (middle initial may have been an "H"). He was born in 1815. I also believe that Tamar died in about 1833 in Cobb Co., GA. I would love to know where William Gilbert, Sr. was buried in Gwinnett Co. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Thanks for any information you can give me. Sue (Johnson) Howard
