First, my great aunt also had listed that William Greene was Nathanael's 2nd cousin. We have all the same information that I have seen online repeatedly. But, we know that after the Revolutionary War there was a big movement of people southward due to the land lotteries that followed the war. We also know through historical documentation that the great majority of those who moved first to North Carolina and then into Georgia were Scot-Irish. My guess is that my line of Greenes (my great grandfather was Augustine Green, brother to Lemuel Greene both of Greene County, GA) were most likely Scot-Irish, and if this be the case, they are not related to Nathanael Greene. Also we know that because of discrepancies in the dates that George William Greene and William Greene have to be two separate individuals. Only thing I have been able to confirm about the Greene side beyond a ! shadow of a doubt is that Augustine Greene was married to Phoebe Burke and the she was a member of a Baptist church in Greene County, and he was not. That Augustine died of smallpox at his brother Lemuel's farm, and that same Lemuel was born in an army fort where the family had taken refuge due to Indian hostilities. Lemuel and Augustine's father was William Greene, Jr. William's wife was Ruth Hunter (listed as Ruthie in my grandfather's Bible). William's father was also William, and he was married to Sarah Alston. The Alstons and Hunters lived in Newbury, South Carolina (where my husband's family is from so I have found some on them) and these families intermarried a lot. This is what I have been able to find independent of the Internet using the family Bible and records at the historical society here where I live. It is also notated in family Bibles that my great-great grandmother (Sarah Greene Harris) was named after Sarah Alston, and my cousin Ruthie was named a! fter Ruthie Hunter. None of the documentation I have lists William, S r. as George William. Not much help, I know. William Sr. is where I have gotten hung up for about 20 years.
