    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Autry Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ic.2ADI/1222.1 Message Board Post: Actually, it happened on the banks of Richland Creek near Scull Shoals on the Oconee River on 2 February 1788. Captain John Autry went out alone and was murdered by Creek Indians... and was buried where he fell. Note that the spelling Scull Shoals is the current modern spelling. I believe that Col. Elijah Clarke's letter to the governor of Georgia that documents Captain Autry's death spelt it Scull Sholes. If you will look at a current Georgia highway map you will see that the Oconee National Forest is divided into two separate pieces. Look at the northernmost part of the northernmost section along the Oconee River and you will see that Scull Shoals is there. It is now a "Georgia ghost town", but it did not yet exist at the time of Captain Autry's death. If I understand the political situation correctly the Creeks and Georgia settlers were at peace and Captain Autry was on lands that Georgia had acquired from the Creeks... but some Creeks did not accept the aquisition as legitimate. Not to mention that from time to time individual Creeks had a tendency to murder folks for whatever reason. There was no battle. I haven't seen anything that proves Captain John Autry was my 3-great grandfather's father, but it is my understanding that he was. My line goes: John Autry + Barbara Rebecca McMillian widow of James Murphy John English Autry + Mary McQuien Forest Presell Autry + James Daniel Haire Mary Lee Haire + King Walter Davis Pauline Davis + Herman Esker White me I would appreciate knowing your line of descent from Captain John Autry.
