    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Caldwell, Jernigan, Jordan, Taylor, Rhodes Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ic.2ADI/708.913.1 Message Board Post: Hi Judith. I do have some additional information since that last post. Part of the information below is the same as in my previous message but with some new additions. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Lamar Moore, we were able to prove that the father of Augustus D. Caldwell was Samuel Caldwell. I will post information on John Littleton Caldwell soon. Need to do some organizing. 1. Samuel Caldwell, born about 1785 in Maryland(?), d. December 1836 in Greene Co., GA. Information I found on the internet shows his wife as Sarah Miles. Samuel & Sarah Caldwell moved to Greene Co., GA, apparently with all of their 10 children, sometime in the early 1800s. They were parents of Littleton D. Caldwell, No. 2 below. 2. Littleton D. Caldwell, son of Samuel & Sarah (Miles?) Caldwell, born about 1804, died about 1833 in Greene Co., GA. He was married Sept. 4, 1825 in Greene Co. to Cynthia McHargue. (I’ve not found her parents yet.) After Littleton’s death, Cynthia (McHargue) Caldwell remarried to Norwood H. Finley/Findley, Jan. 1, 1835 in Greene Co. Littleton & Cynthia only had three children before his death, as follows: (1) Augustus Greene Caldwell, son of Littleton D. and Cynthia (McHargue) Caldwell, was born Nov. 18, 1826, Greene Co., d. Feb. 24, 1899 in Greene Co. He was married in Greene Co., Aug. 9, 1848 to Frances Jernigan, b. Aug. 16, 1836 in GA, d. June 16, 1917, Greene Co. I believe her parents were John E. Jernigan and Margaret Rankin, married Dec. 9, 1830, Greene Co. but haven’t found absolute proof. In the 1850 census we find Augustus G. Caldwell & wife Frances living in the household of Margaret Jernigan. Augustus and his wife are buried in Siloam Cemetery, Greene Co. (2) Martha Ann Caldwell, dau. of Littleton D. and Cynthia (McHargue) Caldwell, was born about 1830 (1850 census shows her as 20 years old). She was married twice – (1) Parker C. Miller, Sept. 13, 1843, Greene Co. and (2) Edmund R. Jordan, Dec. 30,. 1847 in Taliaferro Co. Edmund R. & Martha (Caldwell) Jordan were parents of Corilla V. Jordan who married Elizabeth Savannah Taylor (sister of my grandfather, William Chesley Taylor) (3) Adaline D. Caldwell, dau. of Littleton D. and Cynthia (McHargue) Caldwell, was born ca. 1832, Greene Co. In the 1850 census she was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Martha & Edmund R. Jordan, listed as age 18. She married (1) Absolom Loyd Taylor Oct. 19, 1852 in Taliaferro Co. Loyd Taylor was son of Albert & Rutha (Rhodes) Taylor. (Albert Taylor was brother of my gr. grandfather, Robert S. Taylor.) Loyd Taylor died soon after their marriage and Adaline married (2) John Rhodes son of William & Emily (Evans) Rhodes. I will post again soon with information on some of the children of Augustua G. Caldwell. Hope the above helps some. Rhoda SOURCES: Research of Mr. Lamar Moore. 3. Fir what it is worth. We are picking up quite a few indications that seem to indicate a lot of the folks that ended up in GA had earlier Maryland connections, especially to families in the Somerset and Frederick County, MD areas. These connection may well have included families in adjacent PA counties and even Fairfax, Accomack and Stafford County, VA areas, as well. It seems there were two migration paths to GA, one through western VA and eastern TN and the other down through VA, eastern NC and then SC. Later, these families, once again, begin to re-establish their family links from their original locations in MD. John R. 3. Hey John, It's only taken me 20 years to nail down a pattern of VA to MD to NC to SC to GA for my family...glad to see more climb aboard. Perhaps it will start getting easier to convince people. Initially, we have folks leaving VA for their religious intolerance and hitting MD. They stay there several generations. One group leaves in the 1760's or so, and one waits till the early 1780's. The earlier group goes to NC and gets involved in Regulator activity. Governor Tryon and his property confiscation of the early 1770's led these folks to "get out of Dodge" so they became Rev Soldiers in SC. When GA started handing out land to soldiers of any state, they were off. This seems to be where they pick up with many old MD neighbors...right in Greene Co GA in the mid 1780's. 3. Maryellen, I have two lines that fit into this equation. There is the Francis ALEXANDER (1693-1760) whose daughter, Jane. married Reynolds RAMSEY (also of Somerset, later Frederick County, MD) and their daughter, Jane RAMSEY (ABT 1765-1851) married Rev. Thomas Means RENEAU RS-VA (1760-1840) whose son, Louis O. RENEAU, Esq. (1784-1863) married a Jane NORRIS and their son, Rev. Russell RENEAU (1807-1865) married Elizabeth STOCKTON (1810-1888) and their daughter, Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912) married Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) of Bethany, Jefferson County, GA in 1852. Robert and Mary Jane's daughter, Alice E. DANIEL (1854-1924) married John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907) of Madison, GA in 1872 - my paternal grandparents. Then, we have the other line. Robert W. DANIEL was the son of Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) and Penelope LANE (1773-1846) of Greene County, NC, later, Burke County, GA. I do not know who RCD's parents were. However, I do know who Penelope's parents were, they were Capt. Isham, Isam, Isom LANE (ABT 1730-1801) of Edgecombe, later Greene County, NC. I believe he was related to the Walter LANE, Sr. and Sarah WILSON family of Somerset, later Worchester County, MD. I think that Capt. LANE was married to Lucretia GRAY (ABT 1735-AFT 1773), d/o John GRAY (1690-1756) and Ann BRYAN(T) of Bertie County, NC and I think his family rolls back to MD, probably Somerset but maybe Accomack County, VA, since all of the families in this area were rather close. Your information seems to match up with what I am seeing but do not overlook that western migration through TN and then down into GA, either. All of these families were top level folks which means a lot of folks have linked to them when they were not related to them, at all. For an example, the brother of Rev. Thomas Means RENEAU, also a preacher, Rev. Francis RENEAU RS-VA married Lydia SEVIER, d/o Gen. John SEVIER, first governor of TN and general during the RW. There are also a lot of links that roll down from PA and MD into the Shenandoah Valley and Staunton, VA areas including Augusta County, VA, and these same links roll down into GA, later. The PONDERS, BENNETTS and PATTERSONS are perfect examples of this and the PONDER family of Camden District, York County, SC, later Morgan County, GA, followed this route. There were also more than a handful of Tories in all of this too, including a good portion of the PONDER family. Their land in SC was confiscated by the folks in SC although some supposedly served the Rebel Cause in GA, later. A lot of these folks were Quakers, too, and this may be why some of them became Tories and we know from history a lot of Quakers later became Methodist. The way these folks got to SC was down the Green Mountain Highway from PA through the Shenandoah Valley into the Rowan County, NC area, through present day Charlotte, NC to York County, PA. Some of these folks stopped off in PE County, VA, probably also migrating over into neighboring Granville and Rowan County, NC and then on to SC. Local Greene County, GA families that seem to match this profile are the CUNNINGHAMS, DANIELS, CARLTONS and COFFEE families and they also say the CALDWELLS also were a part of this migration. I cannot say my DANIEL bunch was Tories because they married into too many families that were not but that does not mean they, like the PONDERS, did not have some in their family that were Tories because many of these upper level families tended to play all ends against the middle -- Tory early and rebel, later, after the tied had definitely turned in favor of the rebels. <grin> I think a lot of my maternal lines, especially the TOMLINSONS, did the same thing. <grin> John R.
