My great-great-great grandfather was William Greene, born in North Carolina in 1764, and died in Greene Co. Ga in 1819. He was a second cousin of General Nathaniel Greene of the American Revolution. They both were decendants of the de Greene family, members of which came to England from France prior to 1353, at which time Sir Henry de Greene was Lord Chief Justice of England. Other ancestors down the family line were Robert Greene of Dillingham Dorcetshire, 1545: Richard Greene of Bourridge Hill; John Greene of Salisbury and James Greene of Warwick born 1636, who was the great-great-great grandfather of Gen. Nathaniel Greene and of William Greene, father of the William Greene of this sketch. William Greene was named for his father, whose full name was George William Greene. His mother's name was Nancy, but do not know her maiden name. William Greene was married in 1784 or 1764? to Ruth Hunter, also of N.C and was born the same year as her husband. I don't know her fathers name but her mother was a Miss Alston, and she had four children. Ruth, Lemuel, Elizah and Philip Alston Hunter. William and Ruth Hunter Greene came to Georgia after they married with a party of friends and relatives, making the trip by Ox and Wagon train and settled in what is now Greene Co. Ga., on a plantation near the present town of Greensboro. They had 10 children, nine being born on the home place, and the eldest, Lemuel, being born in a Fort where his parents had taken refuge from hostile Indians. He and his wife are buried in Greene Co. Georgia. On Augustine, Augustine Greene, fifth son of William and Ruth (Hunter) Greene, was born in Greene Co. Ga in 1797. He was one of the Greenes who remained all his life in his native country. He married 3 times. First to Phoebe Burke, second to Nancy Baldwin, and third to Nancy Fisher, but his two sons and four daughters were all from his first marriage. Augustine Greene is buried in Greene Co, and the names of his decendants include GERDING, BRADFORD, LOMBARD, MATTISON, KING, JESTER, MELTON, ROBERT, CAMPBELL, PHILLIPS, STROZIER, BECK, HENDERSON, MANASES, FRAZIER, BUSH, DOOLITTLE, MARKEE, ARRANT, SHAW and BOYD. His childrens names were William, Lemuel, Harriet, Sarah, Amoretta, Anna. Hope this helps some. Katie
Katie, This is interesting. Ruth Greene HUNTER was the sister of Elisha Sparks HUNTER, Sr. whose grand daughter, Mary Lou HUNTER (1848-1917) married my grand uncle, Professor Charles W. RICHTER, Jr. (1837-1907) of Madison. Charles's younger brother, John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907) married Alice E. DANIEL (1854-1924) in 1872 in Madison. Alice was from Jefferson County, GA, the d/o of R. W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) and Mary Jane RENEAU, his 3rd wife. A lot of this bunch seems to roll back to Brunswick and Greenville County, VA. We do not know from whom Alice's DANIEL family descend but we know to whom they are related - 25/25 marker matches with the descendants of Capt James DANIEL (1709-1761) and Jane HICKS of Albemarle County, VA. I have a pretty good layout of the HUNTERS but would like more on the GREENES if you have it. Send it to me, privately. Thanks. John R.
