If not, let me know. Apparently Augustus was wounded during the Civil War and was discharged 24 Apr 1862. Its very possible he died soon afterwards as a result of his wounds. Does the pension application shed any new light on this? A while back I made a concerted effort to sort out all the children of James Backus using his will and existing census records. I came up with 18 in all by three different wives. Fifteen of these are named in his will. Only an unknown girl, an unknown boy, and William are not. Without the will, this would have been next to impossible.
