Vivian, Since you brought up Oglethorpe County, GA there is also a additional HUNTER family tied to the RICHTERS of Madison, GA that is out of Oglethorpe County, GA. This HUNTER family, unlike the Elisha Sparks HUNTER family of Greensboro, is supposedly from Ireland. Nathan HUNTER (1806-1861), supposedly born in Antrim County, IRELAND, married Annie Harrison SMITH (1821-1906), d/o Nathaniel Harrison "Nat" SMITH (1781-1836) of Dinwiddie County, VA, later of Stephens, Oglethorpe County, GA. Nathan and Annie were the parents of Col. Nathaniel Harrison HUNTER (1841-1883) who married Sarah Caroline RICHTER (1842-1908) of Madison, Morgan County, GA in 1862. Nathaniel and Sarah are buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Oglethorpe County, GA. It was Sarah's older brother Charles W. RICHTER, Jr. (1837-1907)who married Mary Lou HUNTER, d/o Elisha Sparks HUNTER, Jr. of Greensboro. When I see siblings marrying persons of the same surname I generally say "same family" but I have been told by other RICHTER family researchers "they were not from the same HUNTER family." I do not know but what I do know is where Annie's family came from and who they are tied to. Her SMITH family was out of Gloucester County, VA, later Brunswick County, VA and even later, Greene County, GA. They are tied to the CHAMBERLAINS, DREWS and COLLIERS. In fact, this SMITH family is very closely collateral with the COLLIERS of New Hanover County, VA, Brunswick County, VA and later Greene and Oglethorpe County, GA. I am also sure the name, Nathaniel Harrison SMITH, also rolls back to Col. Nathaniel HARRISON of Brunswick County, VA since Nat SMITH's parents were Charles SMITH and Ann HARRISON. The two families that are really tight in Brunswick are the HARRISONS and the HICKS. The HARRISONS descend from Nathaniel of Surry County, VA who was married to a CARY and the HICKS who descend from Capt. Robert HICKS of Brunswick County, VA. My DANIEL family which marries into the RICHTER family of Madison at the same level (grandfather, grand aunt and uncle level) as these HUNTER families is a 25 marker DNA match with descendants of Capt. James DANIEL (ABT 1709-1761) and Jane HICKS of Albemarle County, VA. Researchers have tried to force her HICKS family to be a different HICKS family than is found in Brunswick County, VA but I think they Jane HICKS was out of the same HICKS family we see tied to the HARRISONS. I also do not buy James as being what we term a "Middlesex DANIEL" and DNA supports this since DNA is not matching up across descendants of Capt. William DANIEL (1625-1698) of Middlesex County, VA. However, I do not know where the break occurred and we will not know until more DNA testing is done. I generally think Capt. James DANIEL of Albemarle County, VA was what I call a "Woodson DANIEL," and a descendant of Gent. Roger DANIELL, who was also married to a CARY. Some disagree and some do so, strenuously, however I think DNA is beginning to show they are wrong in their assessments because we are getting DNA matches in locations where "we are not supposed to" and not getting matches in locations where "we are supposed to." That, tells me that many early DANIEL assignments are all wrong. I think parts of the DANIEL family of Middlesex County, VA, the Woodson-Watkins DANIELS of Henrico, Goochland and Cumberland County, VA, some of the DANIEL family of Chowan, Tyrrell, Beaufort and Pitt County, NC and quite possibly the DANIELL family of Charleston, SC are parts of the same DANIEL of DANIELL family, since the DANIEL family of Middlesex, this DANIEL family of Henrico and the DANIEL family of Charleston all spelled their names, early, as DANIELL - double L. It was only later that their descendants started dropping the "double L" and resorting to a single L spelling of their name. I also think they were all Royalists who supported Charles II and were rewarded, handsomely by Charles, after he regained the throne in 1663. I also know there is a strong Quaker connection to this overall family, although many later joined the Church of England. It must always be remembered the Quakers were primarily English Royalists who fled England during the English Civil War, many to Barbados, where they aligned with other Royalists to help defeat Cromwell. Also, many in these overall families were real heavy in the mercantile and trading business and this seems to be a general avocation in their families for generations, afterwards. The LANIERS, CHAMBERLAINS and DANIELS were all in this group and the haplotype of my DANIEL family is a perfect match to the Anglo-Saxon haplotype, all of which seems to support, at least, some of these assessments. It is going to take a lot more DNA testing before we know for sure how some of these lines break out. Right now we have tested about 50 different DANIEL persons and have 20 different DANIEL lines, many of which were probably McDANIEL, McDONALD, DONNEL, DANINLEY, etc. at some point, but my DANIEL line from Greene County, NC matches seven others and they match 16% of all DANIEL lines tested (8 out of 50) and I expect this percentage will go up as we continue to test other DANIEL descendants. While deeds and wills may help us sort out later connections in all of our families, the only way we can get these early family connections, correct, is through DNA testing. If your family has not participated in a "Y" DNA test, then I strongly advise that you do so because I think these tests are going to overturn many long held family myths. John R. I believe the Nathaniel Harrison Smith referred to in this item is/was husband to Elizabeth Hudson, dau. of John Hudson of VA (d. 1790) and Mary Beasley, making her a grand-dau of Ward Hudson of VA. Elizabeth, along her remarried mother, now Mary Beasley Ward, (she married John's cousin, Seth Ward in 1794) were in Oglethorpe county by 1800. They lived in the area that changed boundries often, once Greene, then Oglethorpe, back to Greene, maybe back to Oglethorpe........they could have been in both counties and never moved. If this HUNTER lady, Annie Harrison Smith, is a daughter, then I have at least the name of one of the children. Anyone have clues or information for me on that family? God Bless, ear
The children of Nat SMITH (1781-1836) and Elizabeth (HUDSON) that I have are: i. Robert B. SMITH born 4 Sep 1819, died 3 Sep 1851, buried Smith/Sanders Cemetery, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. ii. Annie Harrison SMITH born 9 Jul 1821 in Bowling Green, Oglethorpe County, GA married Nathan HUNTER on 17 Dec 1839 in Oglethorpe County, GA and died 22 Jul 1906 in Bowling Green, Oglethorpe County, GA. She and Nathan are buried in the Smith/Sanders Cemetery, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. iii. Stephen B. SMITH - 8 Feb 1828 - 20 Mar 1855, buried in Smith/Sanders Cemetery, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. iv. Rebecca Elizabeth SMITH - b. ABT 1830, died 17 Dec 1905, married Edward Lloyd SANDERS b. AFT 1820, s/o Jonathan Jones SANDERS and Harriett WAILS. Were any of your ROSE family ever a part of the ROSE family of Marion (then Harrison County) County, TX - located near Caddo Lake, north and west of Shreveport, LA. John R.
