Rabun appointing Joseph Major in Balla????? Milita unit, dated 10th of day of May 1817. Can anyone identify what Militia unit this may have been? I believe William Rabun was the Speaker of the House around that time, so I don't think he was a Military official Joseph Riley was born Jan 7, 1780 and married Elizabeth Smith (1787) and later Nancy Smith in Greene Co.
Well, Joseph is my family-and really appreciated his Bible put on recently, by Virginia Crilly, I am told. Anything to help straighten out the Riley Clan- in Greene and later Taylor-Talbot area.(From Pat Richardson) I have the senate page from Atlanta, was just looking at it when I sent some material to the lady who had the bible info. (She sent me an envelope of Riley's) Williiam Rabun-I am supposing was the one died 26 Oct. 1819 Sparta, Hancock Ga- Gov. of Ga. I am not sure if Elizabeth Battle was his wife-but have her dates as 24 Sep 1784 Fishing Creek, Edgecombe Co NC-12 Dec 1803 Powelton, Hancock, Ga and a good bit more on her family. Joseph Riley-married twice- two sisters. He had one son-Thomas Jefferson by the 1st one and that son is buried in what is now Taylor with my Grays. (Mary Riley married James Gray Rev. sol. and had Archibald Gray married Cynthia Armour in Greene) He had 8 kids by the second one. They were the children of William Smith (Rev Sol Pa-of Cumberland Co Pa, Mecklenburg Co NC and Greene Co. Ga.) and Patsy Moore. Joseph came from Mary's brother John-who is also my ancestor and both married back in Orange Co. NC. Would love a copy of your bad copy- internet is find-but this address probably will not take it-filters? Anyhow I have gerryinga@yahoo.com which does just fine. I am thinking the Militia Units were named for a person of the area-like the tax unit et. By the way-my sheet mentioned from the Archives-is all on Riley's but they had them on all the other surnames. Mine includes several of this Riley Family-dates ranging from 1783- John his Father-Messenger and door-keeper, Executive Council, 1783, Messenger, Executive Council, Jan. 13, 1784, Jefferson-which is Thomas Jefferson Colonel, 83d Regiment (Talbot Co) Jun 10, 1843,1844 1802- John Justice of the Peace, Greene Co Aug. 10 Thomas J Senate Taylor Co. 1857-58 Justice of the Inferior Court, Taylor Co. Feb. 7, 1852-Jan 12 1857 Alexander H Senate, Taylor Co. (Another son of Joseph's) 1855/56 Constitutional Convention 1865, Taylor Co. Judge County Court Taylor C. May 10, 1866 Justice of the Inferior Court, Taylor Co.
