Lee Anne: I am sorry but I don't have anything more on Nathaniel Bates. There were Channell families in America as early as 1700. By 1800 they were found in New England, the northeast, Virginia and North and South Carolina . My gg grandfather, John Channell was born in VA in 1797. Michael Channell, who died in 1836 at age 65 in Greene Co., was born in 1771. Michael appears to have been a brother to my ggg grandfather, Thomas Channell, who was born in the same time period. It is interesting that there was a Michael and Thomas Channell in Robeson Co., NC in 1800. But I have never been able to confirm that they moved to GA. However, the census records indicate that descendants of some of the early residents of NC and SC did come to GA, then to AL and westward. The first record I have of the Channells in Greene or Hancock counties is 1804. I believe that the father of Nancy Channell who married Nathaniel Bates in 1827 would be one of these: Michael Channell (who died in Greene Co., GA at the age of 65) Thomas Channell (1804 Hancock Co., GA tax list) (father of John Channell, my gg grandfather, who moved to AL before 1845) Littleton Channell who married Sally Skinner 29 Nov 1804 in Greene Co., GA Hudson Channell from the 1809 Greene Co. GA tax list (Harmon Channell was also on this list but all of his children are accounted for) However, listed in the 1821 Land Lottery is also a George Channel from Greene Co. and a William Channell from Hancock. It think that these were younger and one or both might have been the brother of Nancy Channell. Here are some others who might have been her siblings although some might have been older and had a second marriage: William Channell m. Elizabeth Wilson 29 Sept 1826, Greene Co., GA Isham Channell m. Nancy Howell 2 May 1830, Greene Co., GA Michael Channell m. Tabity Marchman 16 May 1831, Greene Co., GA Littleton Channell m. Nancy Tolver 24 May 1832, Greene Co., GA Thomas Channell m. Elizabeth Montgomery 17 Jan 1835, Greene Co., GA Mary Channell m. Richard H. Moon 29 Aug 1839, Hancock Co., GA James Channell who m. Caroline Moon, 1845 There are many Channell/Moon connections. James Channell is probably the most documented Channell family in either Greene or Hancock counties. I believe that the Channell families in both counties were closely related. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Anne Center" <lacenter@comcast.net> To: <GAGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 04, 2004 11:36 AM Subject: RE: [Greene] Channell family > Emmitt, > > Who are her candidate parents? > > Who do you have as Nathaniel's parents? Lee Anne...I have been all over for this...a $15 pamphlet on the 1807 lottery now sells for $275. Nobody reprints. The Library in Augusta won't loan any, every genealogical Society says, "gee, no, we can't copy that" ...I don't see why not...the dumb lists are public record. Everybody has a copy of what their family got, but the real value is who got land with them...grrr. I am on a campaign...Maryellen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Anne Center" <lacenter@comcast.net> To: <GAGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 04, 2004 12:19 AM Subject: [Greene] Lookup - Is there an index to the military land bounties prior to 1827? > Does anyone on the index have a land bounty list for GA bounties prior to > 1827? I would love to hear from anyone who is descended from any Channell or Channel in Greene or Hancock counties. I am also researching the Gilbert family. They were in the same counties by 1820. Emmitt Channell
I would be interested in what anyone has to say about the Channell family. A Channell married into a Bates family in a close timeframe to my John A. Bates marrying Elizabeth Alford in 1818.
