Concerning Goodwin (Godwin) - I have a copy of the will of EDMON GODWIN, son of THOMAS GODWIN II who m. Mary Mills. This will is dated 1753 in Nansemond, VA. It is witnessed by Thomas and Arthur Channell and Thomas Wakefield. I was just wondering if this is the same GOODWIN (GODWIN) you have? My ggg grandfather, was THOMAS CHANNELL. He was in Greene/Hancock counties by 1800. His son, JOHN CHANNELL, was born 1797 in VA. I have been trying to link the CHANNELL and GODWIN families. If this is the same GODWIN then perhaps they came to GA about the same time. Thanks for any clues you might have. Hi, All of what you stated is well known. FYI, he was William GREENE, Jr.. Do you have anything on William Sr? If he was a second cousin of Gen. Nathaniel GREEN that means their grandfathers were brothers. I also know of several other families that came through Warren County, NC and I wanted to see if there were other connections in this GREENE family to my bunch. I already know the ALSTONS were in this bunch. I also assume you know the GREENES were from Rhode Island... <<< pg. 4 "In East Greenwich, R. Katie, This is interesting. Ruth Greene HUNTER was the sister of Elisha Sparks HUNTER, Sr. whose grand daughter, Mary Lou HUNTER (1848-1917) married my grand uncle, Professor Charles W. RICHTER, Jr. (1837-1907) of Madison. Charles's younger brother, John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907) married Alice E. DANIEL (1854-1924) in 1872 in Madison. Alice was from Jefferson County, GA, the d/o of R. W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) and Mary Jane RENEAU, his 3rd wife. A lot of this bunch seems to roll back to Brunswick and Greenville County, VA. We do not know from whom Alice's DANIEL family descend but we know to whom they are related - 25/25 marker matches with the descendants of Capt James DANIEL (1709-1761) and Jane HICKS of Albemarle County, VA. I have a pretty good layout of the HUNTERS but would like more on the GREENES if you have it. Send it to me, privately. Thanks. John R. Dear List Members, Can anyone identify these TOOLE family members I found listed as being buried in Oconee County, Georgia, and how they might fit into the family of my 2-great uncle, ED/EDGAR/EDWARD/E. L./THOMAS E. TOOLE? He was b. c. 1861-2 Barnwell District, South Carolina, d. between 1920-1930 probably somewhere in the general area of Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Oconee County, Georgia. Maybe even Greene County??? He married twice in Oconee County, Georgia. Ed L. Toole to Louisa Chancey 13 Dec 1880 (Any children by this marriage???) E. L. Toole to Samantha Brooks 24 Dec 1887 I have my Toole line back to Barnwell District, South Carolina, and back to Edward Toole who was in Cowan County, Bettie Pact. (present day Bettie County) North Carolina as a grown man by c. 1735. I am trying to bring the lineage of this Uncle ED Toole forward to the present times which is sometimes harder than going backwards. His parents were R. I. Manning Tooled and Mary D. Green on the 1880 Census of Oconee County, Georgia. My parents were cousins on the Toole side; I am descended from two of their other children (P. C. & Hattie). Pierce Columbus Toole m. Amanda C. Crow Oconee County 1875 Moved to Augusta, Georgia Two sisters married the same day at Carey in 1875 Recorded in Greene County. Agnes m. Frank Barnette and Hattie A. (Harriet Ann) m. Joseph Vinson Durham Agness Toole and Frank Barnette died young leaving only one surviving child. Hattie Toole and Joseph Vinson Durham reared a large family southeast of Woodville & Temperance Bell Crossroads, Greene County, Georgia, area now called "Durhamtown." Mary D.Green Toole, the mother of thes children, d. 1889 buried in Temperance Bell/Lindsey/Bowles Cemetery. Albert moved back to Barnwell County, South Carolina, after 1880 m. Frances Heath She was a distant Toole cousin. Both buried in Old Springs Methodist Church Cemetery near New Ellenton, South Carolina. I posted a query to the lists a few days ago about Ed Toole's family and received a couple of bits of information back from the list members that was very helpful, particularly the page citation for part of his family on the 1930 census of Clarke County, Georgia. So by some "dumb luck and guess work" I have finally found his family in 1900 Clarke County, 1910 Oconee County, and 1920 Oglethorpe County, and his widow is back living with a married daughter, Effie, in Clarke County in 1930. Now with the census information and bits and pieces of information I have collected over time, the family is beginning to fit together. Ed Toole's family from his second marriage appears as follows: Elizabeth N(?)/Lizzie Toole m. Ola Anglin 1908 Oconee County Mattie Toole m. Lomas (indexed Travis in 1910 Oconee) Clark 1908 Clarke County (one or both may have died by 1920??? A Clark niece is living with Albert and a Clark grandson is living with Ed and Samantha Toole in 1920 Oglethorpe County) Effie Toole m. Newton Pierce 1930 census Clarke County Albert Toole m. Lillie [_?_] 1920 census Oglethorpe County. John H/K Toole Maybe the 2 year old son b. May 1898 in 1900, 12 in 1910, 16 in 1920. On the various census some of the handwriting was terrible and particularly in 1900 there were black splotches and discolorations over the given names of the last two children. Also with a lot of census some of the information appears to be scrambled and the ages might be off several years, etc. I have no other family information with which to compare it. Only family information that I have had all of these years is that there was a brother Edgar, that he had descendants in the Athens, Georgia, area and that one of them was murdered by a man robbing a store robbery, maybe about 1911, which does not fit very well. Is this son, John, the same as John H. Toole buried in the Watkinsville Cemetery below??? Did he have a sister, Mattie, and also have a wife named Mattie M? Who is the John Thomas Toole who served in WWI in an Alabama unit??? BOOK; CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF OCONEE COUNTY, GEORGIA. If not, let me know. Apparently Augustus was wounded during the Civil War and was discharged 24 Apr 1862. Its very possible he died soon afterwards as a result of his wounds. Does the pension application shed any new light on this? A while back I made a concerted effort to sort out all the children of James Backus using his will and existing census records. I came up with 18 in all by three different wives. Fifteen of these are named in his will. Only an unknown girl, an unknown boy, and William are not. Without the will, this would have been next to impossible.

Backus is mispelled Bachus. Either correct this or type in http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/haralson/wills/backus.txt and you should pull up the will. I wish I did, but I don't know why son Augustus (as well as daughter Emily Barnwell and son James) was disinherited. Augustus and Emily were children of his first marriage. James Jr. was a child by his 2nd marriage to Lucinda Knight. The will coupled with census records from 1840 thru 1870 offer substantial evidence that this family existed. The only missing piece is the identity of James' 1st wife, the mother of Augustus, Emily, Nancy A. (Jacobs), and an unknown son and daughter. It's interesting that James was the only son of John Baccus who adopted the surname spelling Backus. His other known siblings; William, John H., Joseph, Gillery, and Green Berry either adopted or kept the Baccus spelling.Census records also suggest there were two other siblings, a girl and a boy, but their names are unknown.

I've had a change of address since my original query on Augustus. Unfortunately, the will you mentioned doesn't seem to be at the Haralson Co. site any more. I know there have been some changes with the GenWeb, so maybe it will be there again eventually. I may already have a copy of the will, though. I had come across this Backus family awhile back, but wasn't sure if it was absolutely the connection for my Augustus Backus. But you say that James married a Lucinda who would have been Augustus' stepmother and Augustus did name one of his daughters Lucinda, so it sounds like this could very well be his family. Do you have any idea why Augustus was cut out of his father's will? I'm definitely interested in any information you have on this family. Thanks so much. Darleen

I have a small amount of Thornton information that I will gladly send you - if you are interested? This Hart Sibley was said to be a close friend of my 2nd Great grandparents Charles Davis and Lois Pearl Gunn Davis. They named my great grandmother Jennie Hart Davis, and it was said that her middle name was from this Hart Sibley. Any information would help. Melissa Turner
