I am replying to the following query about ALLEN families in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in the 1760-70's era that appeared on the Edgefield District/County, South Carolina, list. I am cross posting to several Georgia lists as well. My Phillip Allin (Philip Allen) S31514 received a pension under the Pension Act of 1832 as a Rev. War Soldier as a resident of Clarke County, Georgia. Information in his pension claims that he was about 72 years old (b.c. 1760). Was born in King and Queen County, Virginia. First elisted in 1776 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was serving in South Carolina in 1781 under General Greene and others. He apparently died in Clarke County, Georgia, c. 1838-40. I am not sure when he moved over into Georgia. He was probably in Wilkes or Oglethorpe or Greene County, Georgia, prior to showing up on the Clarke County, Georgia, taxlists on Robinson Creek in the section of Clarke County, Georgia, that became Oconee County, Georgia, as early as 1810. His post office was Watkinsville where Parmenas (sp?) Haynes was postmaster. Haynes and a Jeremiah Daniel were his character witnesses on his pension application. Haynes had previously appeared in Greene County, Georgia, land records around Woodville and Temperance Bell Crossroads (Jeremiah Lindsey's 200 acres of land). In 1819 Clarke County, Georgia, he married Sarah Robinson b. c. 1790 d. between 1870-80 Clarke County, Georgia. This was more than likely not his first marriage. Was Robinson her maiden name or from a previous marriage? They had several children gleaned from the census. He owned land, but appears to have either lost it or sold it by c. 1832. Their daughter, Mary Frances Ann Allen, m. James Crow in Clarke County, Georgia, in 1846. These were one set of my 2-great grandparents. Any early Robinson information would be appreciated. Any connections to the Allens of Mecklenbury in the query below? Anyone researching my Philip Allen? I have a Robert Christie who, in October of 1796, witnessed the will of Josiah Allen in Colleton County, along with Aaron Etheredge. Robert and Aaron were neighbors in Edgefield SC, and as far as I can tell have no other connections in Colleton District. Robert went on to name his first son Josiah Allen Christie, so I suspect a connection somewhere. I do not know the name of Robert's first wife and Josiah Allen Christie's mother, but have always suspected her to be a daughter of a Josiah Allen. I have also read that Elizabeth went on to marry Aaron Etheridge, presumably after the death of Josiah Allen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Audrey Pool" <aep@madnet.net> To: <SCEDGEFI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2004 8:17 PM Subject: Re: Compare ALLEN names on previous records to this will > Note Drury ALLEN in the will of William ALLEN of Mecklenburg Co, VA. Hello Folks, The Greene County Tax Defaulters (1797 & 1798) lists a few REIDs: Henry Reid Zack. Reid Thos. Reid (1797) Reubin Reid Jas. Reid Thos. Reid (1798) I am interested in Reubin Reid, who I am more or less sure is my ancestor. I descend from a female who had children from 05 NOV 1806 to DEC 1829. I think she is a daughter of Reubin. I have seen his name spelt elsewhere as Reuben Reed, etc. I am mostly interested in the REIDs who were in Wm. Wiggin's district, as there are other defaulters (in that district) on that list who are clearly part of the collateral families into which my ancestress REID married. I would very much appreciate any information on any Reubin Reid who could have plausibly been in Greene County, Georgia and had children in the 1780s and/or 1790s. Thanks In Advance :) Gregg Bonner Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Hello! I would like to know more about Elizabeth Williamson Harris. You see, I am a descendant of Wilmot Egerton Harris and his wife, Coley Morris, but I know nothing about Elizebeth Williamson Harris. I am descended from Wilmot's son, Benjamin E. Harris, who was married to Susan Pyron and eventually lived in Pike County, Georgia. The only one that old I show a date on is James married Jean Kelso. The Harris in Greene I'd love to know more about- 2 different Bunches- are: My Nancy Caldwell born a 1765 Mecklenburg Co. NC (Married 1788 Greene Co Ga John Armour also of Mecklenburg Co NC) Her Father appears to be William Caldwell born 1748 Ireland died 1802 Greene His Parents David Caldwell and Ann Harris. Ann is the child of James Harris born a 1662 Ireland & Mary Simpson son of Edward G and Flora Douglas... David Caldwell died 1780 Mecklenburg Co. Ga. His dtr. Isabell "Ibbe" born 1746 Ireland married 1796 William Harris who died 1796 Greene Co. Ga. He was the child of Samuel and Martha Laird, son of James Robert & Dorothy Wiley son of Edward G & Flora Douglas. (And other Greene Co. Connections) My other line is Elizabeth Williamson Harris who appears to be the dtr. of Wilmont Egerton Harris born 1769 Warren Co NC d aft 1830 census (Greene Co GA?) and Coley Morris- son of Charles and Rachel Egerton son of Robert & Ann Fulgham, son of Thomas & Ann Martin going back from Warren to Isle of Wight to Charles City to Wales to England. This Thomas was son of THomas & Alice West etc.etc. Both lines wound up in Greene Co. Ga. I collected for years because someone had to Father my ancestor who married there- (Elizabeth Williamson Harris) and I looked for the Harris and Caldwell-for many years, never suspecting I had a Harris in the Caldwell line too- and that all my material would some day come in handy as my probable folks. _______ Chesley -my thoughts on him- not many. He appears 1894 and married Taylor. His Mother was Mandy. And he was born 1859. Since he married too late for the 1880 Census- I have found no more on him yet, except that he had Chesley Grady- a blind Lawyer-born 1897. Her Father was in Macon Co. before coming to Taylor. This family is supposed to have moved to Jacksonville Fl. in 1916- and lived there to death. Penelope Lane-believe it or not, is a common name. It comes from the Joseph Lane 1710-1774 & Patience McKinney line... (His Parents Joseph 1665-1758 of Surry and Jillion Alderson.) I don't place that particular one-with that husband but I have her- (I guess) Penelope Ann born 1773 dtr of John Lane Rev. Sol. and Mary "Polly" Shephard. He was son of Joseph mentioned above and Patience. Joseph was married Halifax Co Va--and his son John above was a Rev. Sol.-where I do not know. James Daniel 1709-1761 and Jane Hicks of Albermarle Co Va were completely new to me... and I thought I'd seen pieces of all the older ones. Thomas Harris-who married Ann Martin, I show died 14 Mar 1688 WILL OF THOMAS HARRIS Edward Harris Executor In the name of God Amen: I, THOMAS HARRIS, OF THE ISLE OF WRIGHT County , BEING SICK AND WEAK IN BODY, BUT IN SOUND AND PERFECT MEMORY, I DO FIRST AND PRIMARILY BEQUEST MY SOUL UNNTO GOD ALMIGHTY WHO GAVE IT, AND SECONDLY, MY BODY TO THE EARTH TO BE BURIED IN A DECENT AND CHRISTIAN LIKE MANNER, AND DO ORDAIN THIS TO BE MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT IN AMNNER AND FORM AS FOLLOWETH: LLY. There were members of two DIFFERENT Harris families in Greene Co. Ga. (I belong to both) The descendants of Charles Harries b a 1600 Bogrie, Scotland d 5 Dec 1637 had Edward Garrus Harris (Herries) b a 1620 Dumphries, Ayrshire, Scotland died 1673 Done, Ireland Samuel & Martha Laird in Greene, came from the above His son Thomas who had Samuel Baker, Eli, Th.-others And back to James - dtr Ann married David Calwell- whose family wound up in Mecklenburg-(As the OTHER bunch of Harris) and on to Greene Co. Ga. dtr. Isabelle "Ibbe" married William Harris son of Samuel & Martha Laird, and Isabelle's brother William also wound up in Greene- ______ The other bunch- go back (on my records they stop there-anyhow) to William of England who came over with William the Conquorer -to son Wm. of Prittlewell b a 1440--on down through Arthur & Johanna Percy, Wm, Arthur & Dorothy Walgrave, Wm. & Alice Smythe, John, to Thomas b 1616 Wales died 1672 Charles City, Va. to Thomas & Son Robert both died Isle of Wight Co Va. whose children and Grandchildren wound up in Greene. Charles- of Warren Co. NC son of Robert and Ann Fungham had children in Greene His brother Matthew died there- but it appears his children migrated to Hancock, Fayette and other nearby counties. This Matthew married Mary House. _____ The Matthew who married Hannah Ross-came down through Samuel & Martha Laird, James & Dorothy Wiley, Edward & Flora Douglas etc. (Scotland to Ireland) Here is one more ref. on above: HARRIS HISTORY a History of American Descendants of Edward Harris and his Wife Flora Douglas of Scotland 1650-1984 by Carlista V Leonard Santa Monica Ca and another A Genealogy of McGee Harris Latter Day Saint Pioneer by Kenneth C Bullock. I have not done any hard research into my Greene County Harris family and I thank you for those suggestions. My gg grandmother was Mary Catherine Harris (1819-1910) who married John Robert Eidson. They settled in Oglethorpe County and that is where she and her husband are buried. I have a picture of her standing in front of her home that was probably taken around 1905. I cannot place her with any known Harris family and would appreciate any information someone might have. Jim Sands Lawrenceville, GA
I to am a descendant of the Harris family of Greene County GA. Jane Harris daughter of Matthew Harris and Hannah Ross married William Gillespie Orr in Greene Co. in 1820. Hi, Your Thomas HARRIS definitely fits into the Nathan HARRIS (1716-1793) and Catherine WALTON family but Thomas was not listed as their son. This HARRIS family was from Brunswick County, VA, according to most. However, Nathan's grandfather was Thomas HARRIS II (1636-1698) of Charles City so Nathan could have had a cousin of the same name, or even a son of the same name, that we do not know about. I know that Thomas II had a son, Thomas III ( Thomas HARRIS b: 1677 Marriage 1 Judith EDWARDS) who could well be the ancestor of your Thomas. There are two names around my DANIEL family that I cannot account for if they were from where most now say they were from -- EDWARDS and HICKS. We know my DANIEL family of Burke, Jefferson and later, Morgan County, GA, are 25/25 marker matches to descendants of Capt. James DANIEL (1709-1761) and Jane HICKS of Albemarle County, VA. We also know that two or more of their descendants moved to Granville County, NC (Chesley, Josiah and James DANIEL, Jr.). We just do not know how my DANIEL bunch are related to them since my DANIEL family was located over 100 miles to the SE of these folks in Granville down in Johnston, Dobbs and later, Greene County, NC in about the same time frames, yet both of these DANIEL families share a most recent common ancestor. However, Chesley is a given name in my DANIEL family of Burke County, GA but there is no known connection from it to Chesley DANIEL (1730-1814) and Judith Woodson CHRISTIAN of Granville County, NC but they have to connect. However, Chesley does not have a son named Robert Chesley DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) or even any known attachments to a Penelope LANE (1773-1846). who was RCD's wife. However, they are family as DNA tests have shown. I do not know -- maybe you have some thoughts. John R. Hello List Members, I have just joined the POLLARD list though I have been doing genealogy research for over 37 years and am on a number of other e-mail lists. I have been "stuck" on my POLLARD line in Georgia for over 30 years in Taliaferro County, Georgia. My James M. (Monroe?)Edmonds/Edmunds m. Sarah Pollard in Wilkes County Georgia, in 1849. They are listed on the 1850-60-70-1880-1900 censuses of Wilkes County, Georgia. They are buried in the cemetery at Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia, which seems to have gone by a variety of names including the Silvey Cemetery. His sister married Dolphus Silvey. I think that Sarah M. _?_ and Seaborn Pollard were the parents of my Sarah Pollard. They were members of Bethesda Baptist Church in adjoining Greene County, Georgia. From various internet postings of others Seaborn Pollard has a birthday of c. 1790 son of William Pollard and Jame Thompson. Where is the proof of this? On the familysearch.org/Mormon site page I found definite death dates, but no names of the submitters and no original source for the death dates. I have a copy of Lunceford's book of Taliaferro County, Georgia, records. It includes just about everything except the estate records where there was no will. I was in the courthouse at Crowfordville in July. Could not find any estate records for these Pollards if the records were there. Seaborn Pollard d. July 2, 1841 Elizabeth Pollard d. January 5, 1844 (Listed as a daughter at family search. org) Seaborn J. Pollard d. July 18, 1843 (Listed as a son at family search.org) These Pollards seem to have ranged over Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Taliaferro, and Greene County, Georgia, making them hard to trace. Taliaferro County was formed c. 1827 by taking slices out of adjoining counties including Wilkes, Greene and Oglethrope Counties, Georgia. What is the source/reference for these death dates. I have no family tradition or oral history on this branch of the family. Only going by records as I find them that seem to match. POLLARD verical file folder at the new Georgia Archives at Morrow, Georgia, was not helpful either. I will see this this posting works. Something seems to be wrong with my e-mail lists at rootsweb. My posting to the lists are not coming back to me so I don't know what else I am missing. If it does work, I will post more information later from the family group sheet I have compiled on this family.
