    1. Netiquette
    2. Joe & Laura Schmidt
    3. Hi List Members! Since it is at that time of year when the lists start to get busy, I figured I would give you all some hints at writing more productive emails and a little bit of netiquette. Hopefully some of you will pick up on a few of these! 1) Please when writing to the list, look at the subject line in your email! Is it pertinent to your query? Or have you just hit the reply button to someone else's mail and the subject has nothing to do with your letter? Please make that subject line special to your query! 2) DO NOT hit reply to on the entire digest! DO NOT have a subject line that says Re: LISTNAME-D Digest V00 #266! That subject has nothing to do with your query or anyone else's original message! 3) When writing a query, DO NOT write in all UPPERCASE LETTERS! This is only done when you are SHOUTING at someone! 4) When writing an effective query, please put SURNAMES in UPPERCASE as this makes it easier for others to spot when reading their mail, thusly making your query more effective! 5) Try to list any dates and locations that you know! Maybe someone else will be searching that SURNAME in that time period and locality, (not necessarily your ancestor but maybe a brother, sister or cousin) 6) Always include your email address in the body of the letter too! The messages are archived. It will be easier for someone to do a search in the mail lists and see your email address in the body so if they are not list members, they can still answer you easily! 7) Be polite! No one is perfect and not everyone will take the time to use common netiquette, but that doesn't mean you have a right to tell them what to do. If you have a problem with a list member, write LISTNAME-admin@Rootsweb.com and let the list maintainer decide what to do. You have no right telling fellow list members what to do or not to do! 8) When sending a web site address, always type it in the form of "http://." because some e-mail programs will permit the user to click on a web address to go right there. Without the "http://" prefix these programs will not recognize it as such. 9) Do not blatantly promote your business by posting an advertisement to a discussion group, unless it is clearly an accepted use and you have cleared it with the list maintainer first. Otherwise, you are "spamming." 10}Do not forward personal e-mail to a discussion group without getting the author's permission first. Also do not forward from one mail list to another without the original author of the message's permission! 11) Read over your e-mail before you send it. Although e-mail is an informal method of communication, be sure you make your points clear and concise. Use a spell checker if available! 12) Consider that a large audience will see your posts. Take care in what you write. Remember too, that mailing lists are archived, and that your words will be stored for a very long time in a place to which many people have access. 13) If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you summarize the original at the top of the message, or include just enough text of the original to give a context. This will make sure readers understand when they start to read your response. Giving context helps everyone. But do not include the entire original! 14) Be careful when you reply to messages or postings. Frequently replies are sent back to the address which originated the post - which in many cases is the address of the mail list! You may accidentally send a personal response to a great many people, embarrassing all involved. 15) When sending a message to more than one mailing list, especially if the lists are closely related, apologize for cross-posting! 16) When unsubscribing from a list on RootsWeb write a new email in plain text to LISTNAME-L-Request@RootsWeb.com (or -D if you are a digest mode member) with only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message and please spell unsubscribe correctly. You have to unsub from the address you are subscribed under, otherwise you will never get off the list! If you can't use the address you are subscribed under, write LISTNAME-admin@RootsWeb.com and explain the problem. 17) Do not post virus warnings to the mail lists! RootsWeb has filtering set up where you will NEVER get a virus from a RootsWeb mailing list! 18) Always post in "plain text" If you don't know how to switch your program to plain text, see http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/html-off.html and it will walk you through it! 19) Write LISTNAME-admin@RootsWeb.com before deciding to promote a new mailing list. Ask permission first! 20) Most of all have fun!

Earlier in the book, it is worth mentioning, it is noted that John Alston's wife was General Francis Marion's sister. Since the author mentions this important historical connection and many others in the Alston family, I find it curious that he would not mention a connection to General Nathanael Greene. First, my great aunt also had listed that William Greene was Nathanael's 2nd cousin. We have all the same information that I have seen online repeatedly. But, we know that after the Revolutionary War there was a big movement of people southward due to the land lotteries that followed the war. We also know through historical documentation that the great majority of those who moved first to North Carolina and then into Georgia were Scot-Irish. My guess is that my line of Greenes (my great grandfather was Augustine Green, brother to Lemuel Greene both of Greene County, GA) were most likely Scot-Irish, and if this be the case, they are not related to Nathanael Greene. Also we know that because of discrepancies in the dates that George William Greene and William Greene have to be two separate individuals. Only thing I have been able to confirm about the Greene side beyond a ! shadow of a doubt is that Augustine Greene was married to Phoebe Burke and the she was a member of a Baptist church in Greene County, and he was not. That Augustine died of smallpox at his brother Lemuel's farm, and that same Lemuel was born in an army fort where the family had taken refuge due to Indian hostilities. Lemuel and Augustine's father was William Greene, Jr. William's wife was Ruth Hunter (listed as Ruthie in my grandfather's Bible). William's father was also William, and he was married to Sarah Alston. The Alstons and Hunters lived in Newbury, South Carolina (where my husband's family is from so I have found some on them) and these families intermarried a lot. This is what I have been able to find independent of the Internet using the family Bible and records at the historical society here where I live. It is also notated in family Bibles that my great-great grandmother (Sarah Greene Harris) was named after Sarah Alston, and my cousin Ruthie was named a! fter Ruthie Hunter. None of the documentation I have lists William, S r. as George William. Not much help, I know. William Sr. is where I have gotten hung up for about 20 years.

    2. Vivian Toole
    3. List Members, I am again cross posting with additional notes on my POLLARD and EDMONDS line with connections that migrated through Wilkes, Taliaferro, and Greene, and Oglethorpe County, Georgia, at various times. On the POLLARDS, I think my line goes: William Pollard of Culpepper Co., Va. William Pollard b. by c. 1760 Va. d. before 1820 m. Jane Thompson I think he is the one who servied in the Rev. War. I have not research this line this far back, This is from other people. Seaborn Pollard, Sr. b. c. 1780 m. c. 18000-1805 Sarah M {_?_} b. c. 1782 d. October 9, 1872 from newspaper reference of that time period in Greene County, Georgia. Sarah Pollard m. 1849 Wilkes County, Georgia, to James Edmonds On the EDMONDS line: Francis Edmonds m. Rachel [_?_] in Halfax County, Virginia, on Bannister River 1768 John Edmonds m. Winnifred Buckner d. Anthony Buckner and Amy Powell Powels back to c. 1715 St. Paul's Parsih, Stafford County, Virginia James Edmonds b. 1776 m. 1st. in Lincoln Co, Ga. Stratham (various spelling) m. 2nd 1812 Wilkes County, Ga. Sarah/Sallie R./Ross Bruce dau. of Elizabeth [_?_] and Daniel Bruce d. bef. 1803 James M. Edmonds m. 1849 Wilkes County Sarah Pollard Buried with markers in teh Rayle Cemetery, Wilkes County, Georgia. I am estimating the Seaborn Pollard, Sr. was born somewhere around 1780 or so, ball park figure, and died before the 1850 census. Through the Conference Minutes of Bethesda Baptist Church I have established that his wife was Sarah M. {_?_}. This matches up with the census and the Taliaferro County deed below in my notes. She is suppose to have died October 9, 1872. I have estimated her birth as being somewhere before that date in 1782 in Virginia according to the census. I am also making an educated guess that their marriage would have been somewhere around 1800 to 1810. I don't have age estimated on some of their children. At the present time I have 661 people in an Edmonds file who are either descendents of Francis Edmonds and Rachel[_?_] or connected to some of their descendents. When I published the Bethesda Church Minutes I was looking for my Reynold line, but found a lot of other "stuff" instead. Not much entered on the Pollards yet. I still have copies that would make a nice Christmas present. Lots of Taliaferro County folks in the index. I am originaly from Georgia. My family lived with my maternal grandmother when I was a preschooler and I went to Church at Bethesda east of Union Point in Greene County. I still have first cousins there. I just married a Texan. So don't e-mail me about other lines that came to Texas unless you know that they connect back to these counties in Georgia because I can't help you. I am still not clear on the McAvoy connections. Maybe more than one Pollard-McAvoy marriage. Vivian Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates NOTES I HAVE ENTERED IN MY GEN.
