    3. Well, Joseph is my family-and really appreciated his Bible put on recently, by Virginia Crilly, I am told. Anything to help straighten out the Riley Clan- in Greene and later Taylor-Talbot area.(From Pat Richardson) I have the senate page from Atlanta, was just looking at it when I sent some material to the lady who had the bible info. (She sent me an envelope of Riley's) Williiam Rabun-I am supposing was the one died 26 Oct. 1819 Sparta, Hancock Ga- Gov. of Ga. I am not sure if Elizabeth Battle was his wife-but have her dates as 24 Sep 1784 Fishing Creek, Edgecombe Co NC-12 Dec 1803 Powelton, Hancock, Ga and a good bit more on her family. Joseph Riley-married twice- two sisters. He had one son-Thomas Jefferson by the 1st one and that son is buried in what is now Taylor with my Grays. (Mary Riley married James Gray Rev. sol. and had Archibald Gray married Cynthia Armour in Greene) He had 8 kids by the second one. They were the children of William Smith (Rev Sol Pa-of Cumberland Co Pa, Mecklenburg Co NC and Greene Co. Ga.) and Patsy Moore. Joseph came from Mary's brother John-who is also my ancestor and both married back in Orange Co. NC. Would love a copy of your bad copy- internet is find-but this address probably will not take it-filters? Anyhow I have gerryinga@yahoo.com which does just fine. I am thinking the Militia Units were named for a person of the area-like the tax unit et. By the way-my sheet mentioned from the Archives-is all on Riley's but they had them on all the other surnames. Mine includes several of this Riley Family-dates ranging from 1783- John his Father-Messenger and door-keeper, Executive Council, 1783, Messenger, Executive Council, Jan. 13, 1784, Jefferson-which is Thomas Jefferson Colonel, 83d Regiment (Talbot Co) Jun 10, 1843,1844 1802- John Justice of the Peace, Greene Co Aug. 10 Thomas J Senate Taylor Co. 1857-58 Justice of the Inferior Court, Taylor Co. Feb. 7, 1852-Jan 12 1857 Alexander H Senate, Taylor Co. (Another son of Joseph's) 1855/56 Constitutional Convention 1865, Taylor Co. Judge County Court Taylor C. May 10, 1866 Justice of the Inferior Court, Taylor Co. Jan 23, 1865-1866 Gerry Hill ----- Original Message ----- From: <varcsix@hot.rr.com> To: <GAGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 2:43 PM Subject: [Greene] 1812 Militia Balla ???? > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ic.2ADI/1763 > > Message Board Post: > > Joseph Riley - have a bad copy of certificate signed by Wm. Just wanting to add that the Library in Albany is a wonderful place!!!!!!! Jeanette Driggers in the Genealogy Room there (downtown Library) is so very knowledgable about all their holdings & is wonderful about helping. I've been to many Libaries over our state of GA while husb was on business & amazing what you can find in even the smallest of Libraries! Memorable, of course is the Washington Memorial Library in Macon - a pure treasure! A really well organized one was the collection in the Library at Statesboro, when Henrietta Royal was there - haven't been since she retired, I think...... but this was when they were even in temporary quarters while the Library was being renovated. Also, the treasure at Moultrie, Ellen Payne Odom Gen. Library - the respository for so many Scots' Clans. The Ladson Gen. Library at Vidalia, GA - don't know if Emily Hartz is still there - but she was a wonder also! Then there's the Huxford Gen. Soc Library in Homerville, GA......with Violet Bennett who was so helpful..... Also a small Library at St Simons, GA as well as the one in Brunswick, GA - the Lib. in Rome, GA, Lib. in little Clarksville, GA & in Tifton, GA - from one end of the state to another....... It is amazing what can be found but for going & looking....... Another pure delight, far more than worth the trip - even tho I don't have lines in ALA, is the Library over in Birmingham, ALA - downtown - it has an absolutely beatiful Gen bldg connected to the main Libaray by a covered "bridge" & parking is easy......is right off the interstate. I've been told that their collections of Quarterlies is one of the largest found...... I would compare it to the quiet, peaceful area in which to work w/the GA Historical Society bldg in Savannah....... I miss those "Family Puzzler's" but am so glad they were still being pub-lished when I started - was like Christmas every week!!!!!! <g> Thanks for giving me a chance to remember all these places so thankfully! 3. I think in previous years-I did give you this once-but it bears repeating. Mary Warren wrote a little weekly thing for many, many years called Family Puzzlers. She has done many books on Ga. records, and had Heritage Pub. which I think her dtr. runs now. The mag. pittered out after her retirement. Family Puzzlers #1188 Pg. 2 Greene Co. Ga. Church Records A lady in Jacksonville Fl., had ask where to find extant church records for Greene 1790's -1800 Mary advised her that there were probably only three denominations active in Greene during this early period. Babtist, Methodist and Presbyterian Baptist-Microfilm of many early congregational minute books available through interlibrary loan from Georgia Baptist Historical Collection-Mercer University Library, Mcon Ga. (And you may search them there GH) Methodist Almost no congregational records, since churches in that area were part of a "circuit" tThey were served by a "circuit rider" a minister who rode from congregation to congregation to hold services. Records, if any survived may be available from Methodist Archives, Drew Universon, 26 Madison Ave. Madison NJ (I am leaving off zips not to comfuse you OR the postman, as so many have changed GH) Presbyterian: Presbyterian Historical Fou ndation, Montreat, NC (Additons-from me) Also folks-a good place to look are funeral homes that have been around a while. I have always found them willing to share. And the Masonic Temple-not local, but on the State level- and a lot of old insurance companies. Remember you are talking long dead folks. They would be a bit stickier about recent ones. Ms. Gerry Hill-Albany Ga
