    3. My records show John W. Thompson on the Gilmer Co. Ga. 1850 Census as a 7 y/o son of Samuel J. Thompson and Sarah Carter Thompson. Sub. 33 Page 351. The 1860 Census, Sub. 33 pg 19 show him (16) living with mother Sarah Thompson and 4 sisters and grandfather Henry Carter. He was a brother to my gr grandfather James J. Thompson. They were in the Confederate army and deserted went to Tenn. and joined the North. This John W. Thompson married Elizabeth Teague. On the 1870 Gilmer Co. Census he is 56 and living with wife Elizabeth and 7 daughters and 2 sons. I have a note that he died about 1902 and had his funeral at Clear Creek, Ga. Now there was another John Thompson living in Gilmer Co. Ga listed on the 1840 and 1850 census. 1850 Census Family # 1299, pg 877 & 78 John Thompson (no wife listed) has a son John age 9. I wonder is this could be the one is question. In the court records of Gilmer Co. is a John Thompson that died around the 1st of Sept 1886. The county had to bury him. In 1840 he had 9 slaves and was very prosperous. He probably lost everything in the Civil War or was wounded and unable to work. Samuel J. Thompson arrived in Gilmer Co. Ga in the early 1830's. He was a carpenter. Court records he was paid $11.00 on Sept. 3. 1840 for building the table and chairs for the first court house. He was on the grand jury and listed as a teacher once. We have not been able to determine the parents of Samuel J. Thompson and have heard that he had a brother. I have wondered if this John Thompson listed in the 1840 and 50 Census was his brother. Hope this clears some of the questions. I might add that my grandparents came from Gilmer Co. in 1887 to Celeste , Texas. He was Martin C. Compton and she was Sarah Ann Thompson. Will send more info later.
