Since I have family Bible pages listing the children of Sherod James and Leodocia (called Dicey) Sandlin, I might disagree that Joel and Cynthia were issues of this marriage. Follow the links to Archives at www.studiosr.com/research/ to see the scanned pages of the Bible online. I have never seen a Joel James in any of the research I have done about the James family in York or Union, SC>Gilmer/Pickens County, GA. The Joe Hart Collection in the McKelvey History Center in York has been the best source of information about the James and Sandlin families in York. And I thought I had sifted through every piece of paper in the court houses of Cherokee, Gilmer and Pickens Counties that mentioned James and Sandlin! Two Cynthia James?? "Cynthia James" is mentioned in the Joe Hart Collection as possibly living with the household of Sherod and Dicey at one time. And I have encountered researchers who believe that she is a child of Sherod and Dicey. Because of the Bible pages and what I have found in Fulton family manuscripts in Garland County, AR (Gilly James was married to Horatio Sparburn Fulton) and certain pieces of evidence picked up in Poor School Records, etc, in Gilmer/Pickens County---I believe that Cynthia James (born 1821 SC) was daughter of Edmund (and Betsy) James who was a sibling of Sherod's. (See 1840 Gilmer census.) I have found a marriage record in Gilmer County for the marriage of Cynthia James to Joseph Williams. And they are in the 1860 census of Pickens County (HH 124) with a 14 year old daughter, Amanda E. Williams. Amanda married John H. Tough on 27 Nov 1876 in Pickens County (Book A, page 498). "Cynthia James" witnessed a land transaction of Sherod James's in Gilmer County, as did Edmund and Betsy. And when Sherod's estate is auctioned after his death, both Cynthia Williams and Joseph Williams are listed in the probate records. Additionally, Cynthia and Joseph purchased the grist mill on Talking Rock Creek shoals from Sherod's estate, I believe. The 1860 Pickens County census shows Ellison Cobb and Cynthia Cobb (both age 65 and born in SC) in HH 202 and Williams families in HH 204, 205, and 206. There are Moss families in HH 197, 198 and 208. For mention of the Moss families in letters that Selina James Reid wrote to her family in Arkansas, see my online archives also. While this Cynthia may certainly have been a James, I have never personally seen evidence of it. Since she must have been married about 1815, she was no doubt married while still in SC? I seem to recall the Joe Hart Collection mentioning this marriage. The James families belonged to Antioch Church in York District, and many family marriages are mentioned in their records---so this might be a good resource. also. I have tracked down all of the children of Sherod and Dicy, I believe. Listed in order of birth: --------Elizabeth James married William Caldwell in SC and came to Gilmer/Pickens with her family in late 1835. William Caldwell was in the militia who rounded up the Cherokee for removal, and probably joined Federal troops for the Trail of Tears. He never returned, but Betsy stayed in Pickens County until her death in 1873. Her children (married to Baileys, Mullins, Fulton, etc) scattered to Alabama, Arkansas and Texas. --------Daniel James married Arabella Clement Fulton in Yorkville, SC. He died in 1845 and his family never migrated to Georgia. His son Albert Allison James was an Episcopalian minister of some renown in SC. --------Abigail (Gilly) James married Horatio Sparburn Fulton, brother of Arabella. They came to Gilmer briefly in the 1830s before moving on to Alabama. They returned to Gilmer County briefly after the death of Dicy and Sherod, but then moved with all of their family to Arkansas. There is much about this family in Garland County, AR. --------Mary James was married first to Joseph Reed, and they came to Georgia with Sherod and Dicy. Mary was married second to Jeremiah Meek and she died while living in the household of Allison Caldwell, son of Betsy and William. There were apparently no children born to Mary. --------Sarah James married Baylis Earles and stayed in the vicinity of Blacksburg, SC. --------Sharud James, Jr, married Doria Maria "Dunken" (according to a Bible inscription), and was probably married at least twice after her death. This family is most likely to be found in Walker County, GA after 1850. --------John Shelton James, who was executor of old Sherod's estate, was married to Martha Harriet Henry in SC. After her death, he married Mary Anne Street (a widow). John died in Texarkana, AR. His son was a Baptist minister of some renown in Birmingham, AL. --------Nancy Elizabeth James married John Calhoun Smith and their family lived in Cherokee County, SC. --------Selina James married first Johnson Alberty, son of a wealthy Cherokee planter family living in the vicinity of Talking Rock, GA. When he left on Trail of Tears, she remained behind with her baby, who came to be called William Washington James. Later Selina married Hiram Reid and had more children. She stayed in Talking Rock until her death in 1905. Part of Selina's legacy are several newsy letters that she wrote to her niece, Rachel Caldwell, in Arkansas in the late 1800s. They are transcribed online in my Archives. I would love to find out more about Cynthia and Ellison Cobb, if Norm or Donna would like to share!!
