Please be aware that although Lawrence Stanley's books give a personal glimpse into Gilmer County history, there are many errors concerning family relationships. He interviewed people in the county but apparently didn't do extensive research in public court records. I've found quite a few mistakes in his work, and anyone who depends solely on these books to connect local families will have lineage problems. The books are great for getting an idea of early mountain life in Gilmer County, but don't let them stop your research just because he says the families aren't related...mine were!
