Good morning to you All, I wanted to let you all know about a project going on in North Georgia that is very dear to my heart. The Prater's Mill Foundation is starting the genealogy section of their Southern Appalachian Folklife Center. The plans are for this to ultimately be a museum, research library and much, much more. We are in need of Family Group Sheets or even entire family trees for the families that settled in this area including those that lived here for a while and moved on. If you have extremely old photographs of your ancestors a copy of those included with your records would be great. As it grows, we foresee this genealogy collection to be a wonderful place to research your missing ancestors in this area. If you want to have your ancestors included in this collection, please mail your Family Tree info or Family Group Sheets to: Appalachian Folklife Genealogy % The Prater's Mill Foundation P. O. Box H Varnell, Georgia 30756 Join us in making this dream come true. Send in your family history today. Thank you all in advance for your help, Paula Franklin [Volunteer] http://pratersmill.org/

I have added several pages to my website. These pages list the heirs who lived outside of Henderson County NC and are included in "Abstract Henderson County Estate Records 1838 - 1900" I hope this helps you link to Henderson County. The heirs are listed by State and then County, if the county was given in the documents. This is by no means all the heirs who lived outside Henderson Ct - just the ones I noted from the documents. Click below to review the list: http://ksummers55.home.mchsi.com Kathy Summers
Good hot afternoon to you all, I have reindexed the search engine on the Gilmer County AHGP web site at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/gilmer/ after adding about 500 more names to the marriage database. We now have online A,B,C,I, Q,U,V brides and grooms and Z grooms, no brides. Come check out your Gilmer County folks. Adjoining counties might want to search here too just in case this was the closest place to where the persons lived. Good luck, Paula
Good morning, I have just added some new info to the Gilmer County AHGP web site at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/gilmer/ I have added partial cemetery surveys for Ellijay City Cemetery and Tails Creek Baptist Church Cemetery to go along with the partials on Rock Creek and Ebenezer that were already online. I have also added a huge list of marriages for brides surnames beginning with A and B compliments of Dianne Wood. There are plenty more of these to come from Dianne's list submitted to me for posting so keep checking back. If you have cemetery or other information that you would be willing to share please feel free to submit it for posting by using any of the email buttons on the web site or email to gilmerkin@yahoo.com Happy hunting, Paula
Hi, Gilmer Countians. New here. I find on the 1850 Gilmer CO census Burton McGEE, 30, b.NC, m.Martha Unknown, 28, b.NC, with children John B., 8, b.NC, David L., 6, b.NC, Cinthia, 4, b.NC, Sarah, 2, b.NC and Martha A., 8 mos, b.GA. Seeking to place this family in three different ways. (1) I believe, but have no solid proof, that this Burton is the same Burton McGEE who appears on the 1840 Wilkes CO NC census. That Burton McGEE is 20-30, has in his household a female 20-30, and one male under 5. If I am correct, the female is Martha and the child on the 1840 census has died by 1850. (2) I believe on some evidence that this Burton is the son of Bluford McGEE who appears on the 1840 Wilkes CO NC census aged 50-60. Bluford is the brother of a James McGEE who I believe to be the same James McGHEE who appears first on the 1834 special GA census, then appears again on the 1840 census with 12 persons in his household. Another brother of Bluford, David, jr. once wrote that by the time he reached AL, one of his brothers had reached GA. Is that James? There is other reason to believe the Murray CO and Wilkes CO James McG(H)EEs are the same. Both are married to women named Mary (Polly) and both Marys are born NC. Finally, James McGHEE had a son who he named Burton but who, I am more than little positive, is not the Burton in Gilmer CO GA. (3) It gets trickier. I believe on almost no evidence but surmise that David L., the son of Burton McGEE in Gilmer CO, is the same David Leander who appears on the 1870 Osage CO KS census, 27, b.NC, m.Amanda (Greenlee, I think), children Martha P., 2 (named after his mother Martha?), b.NE and Mary E., 3 mos, b.KS. According to some records which appear on Familysearch.org, this David's father was a Burton McGee, m.Narcissa (Greenlee, I think), sister of Amanda. So, did Martha die? And Burton and son David travel to KS where they married sisters? Additionally, some Familysearch.org records show a son born to David L. who was named Ambrose Burton, which just happens to be the names of two sons of James McGHEE of Murray CO (Ambrose is my grx2grandfather). It is possible that this David L., who I have no reason to think is Cherokee, may have fought with the Cherokee Mounted Volunteers during the Civil War and in the same regiment in which the sons of Ambrose McGHEE fought. Can anyone help with this family and the making (or unmaking) of these connections? All the ages of these folks, with the exception of the male appearing in on the Wilkes CO census in Burton's household, match up with my speculations. Any help appreciated. Always happy to share anything I have. Happy searching! Leo

Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be out of pocket for a while. Taking in a family reunion and doing some research on my own family while on vacation or so I hope. Will see what I can pick up for my counties here in Georgia while I am at it. If you have submitted info to one of my counties for posting and it is not yet online please be patient just a short while longer and I will try to have it up very shortly after I get back home. I have a lot of new stuff posted on the sites but did not have time to update the search engine on the sites so the new stuff can only be hunted out manually. Please feel free to visit the site and fill my mailbox up with addtional info for posting while I am gone. I love it and love genealogy and love all my volunteers that contribute to the sites so other researchers can benefit. YEA!!! http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/gilmer/ Thank you, Paula gilmerkin@yahoo.com

List, I looking for the burial place for a John Underwood, son of Elijah Underwood and Eleanor Redman Underwood. John Underwood died ca 1849. The family was residing in Gilmer County, in the 1850 census and John's children are living in the household of David ( cousin ) and Frances Underwood. The circumstance of John death is a mystery as well as the name of the mother of his children. Harold Cochran
I am posting the following for the author of the following book. These are records that have not been available before now. Remember Henderson Co., NC was formed in 1838, and in 1861 Transylvania Co., NC was created out of Henderson Co., so you will fine records during these years here also for Transylvania Co., NC. Any questions, just ask? Wylene Alston These valuable records have been in Raleigh NC since 1960 and never available in any printed form before now. Estate records, or probate records, were generated when a person died without a will. The court settled the deceased estate and in doing so generated a tremendous amount of documentation. These documents usually listed the widow/widower, heirs (children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters), sometimes where the heirs lived, names of slaves who were sold to settle the estate, dower issues, inventories and accounts. In fact, estate records give much more information than a will. I have published an abstract of these records. There are over 750 sir names listed and over 5000 names. The amount of information is truly phenomenal! Click on the URL below to review the book and for ordering. If you will email the name you are looking for I will tell you if the book will be beneficial to you. http://ksummers55.home.mchsi.com Kathleen Summers

Won't you please visit our site and see if you can help them out? http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/gilmer/ Some of the surnames are Davis, Bradford, Harper, Plemmons, Withrow, Harper, Johnson and Bridges. I am searching for information on Nora Adaline Harper, b. 1884, d. 1968, m. Lee Monroe Withrow, 1903, daughter of William P. Harper and Leigh Plemmons. I have them ( I believe) residing in Board Town/ MountainTown areas of the county. I am also searching for ancestry on her parents-William P. Harper and Leigh Plemmons. I have little to no information on these two individuals. I only know, from family accounts, they lived most of their lives if not all, in Gilmer.
I am researching a John William Davis born on 3 January 1884 in Ellijay, Georgia, Gilmer County. He married Martha Kay Bradford. He died 29 November 1968 in Plant City, Florida. He had 3 sons that I know of, Claude Allen, b.1908, Columbus, b. !905-08 and Jackie, b. after 1909. Any information you have on this family and or John William or Martha Bradford's Ancestors will be sorely appreciated. Thanks John G.
