The Ellijay Railroad was chartered in 1854 to construct a line from Marietta to Murphy, NC. In 1859 the name was changed Marietta, Canton and Ellijay and in 1874 to the Marietta and North Georgia. Construction of the line to Ellijay was completed in 1874. About 1894 it joined with a line from Knoxville and became the Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern which was purchased by the L&N (now CSX) in 1902. In 1906 the L&N built the more direct line from Etowah to Cartersville through Chatsworth and this line was abandoned as a mainline. In 1987 the portion from Marietta to Ellijay was sold to the Georgia Northeastern. It is possible that the Gilmer sons could have been involved in the construction of the line. The only rail connection from Ellijay to Blount County, AL would have been either south through Marietta ar north through Knoxville. There was never any east - west connection, Fort Mountain and a few other topographical obstacles. Does anyone have any knowledge of the railroads in Gilmer County ca 1850 + ? Two Gilmer sons ended up in Blount County, Alabama working for the LN & R railroad. I suspect but don't know that there was a line connection in Gilmer. Thanks for any help. Dennis

I am pretty sure that my James W. Chastain descends from one of these men. Can someone please help me. Calvin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! I would love to know if there is anyone still in Gilmer Co who may be descended from this RATLIFF family. (That Family name was spelled SO many ways, but I have spelled them all in one way in my file to keep myself from working to hard to find them when I am working on them.) My husband's grandmother was Mary Jelillie RATLIFF, but her name was spelled RACKLIFF in her Marriage Bond, while her brother's names were spelled as RATLIFF in the same Marriage Bond, as bondsman and witness. I have finally found who she descends from, but we would love to find some other members of this family. Mary was in the 1870 census in Ellijay, Gilmer Co, GA, but they moved to Alabama at some point after that. She married John Melton CANANT in Alabama and they moved on to TX because a couple of Mary's brothers had been either badly wounded or killed in the Steel Mill in AL. She didn't want to see her sons work there. She also had a younger brother named ADOLPHUS RATLIFF, who disappeared at some point from AL, and no one ever heard from him again. We would also love to know what happened to him if anyone knows. I am sending 3 generations (not all of what I have), so that those on this list can see the names from Gilmer Co. I already know that there were some RATLIFF/RACKLEY families in Gilmer who came from SC to GA, but our line came from Buncombe Co, NC to Gilmer Co. I suspect that they were kin somehow. Thos listed under the unnamed Ratliffs may or may not have been from our line. If I have them in error, please let me know. Members of the Dover-L Message Board are becoming involved in DNA testing to establish connections with ancestors. These tests require direct male DOVER descendants. DNA is complicated to explain but there's good information at the web site. "Our service [Family Tree DNA] is dedicated to helping genealogists find lost relatives when the paper trail ends and the brick wall takes its place. We use a painless cheek scraping to obtain DNA that can help accurately determine a relationship with either a 99.9% probability of YES or a 100% certainly that no near term relationship existed." <http://www.familytreedna.com/index.html> http://www.familytreedna.com/index.html Lot of information about what the DNA does. In the upper right corner, type in DOVER and hit search. It's strongly suggested that you or those known male Dover's subscribe to the Dover-L list to see and hear what's going on. <mailto:Dover-L-request@rootsweb.com> Dover-L@rootsweb.com Type subscribe in the body of the message and send. To view the Dover-L messages go to the following link. The DNA tests have been discussed in August and September. Many list members who are not direct Dover male to direct Dover male descendants are asking to be able to participate by helping offset the cost. <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/dover> http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/dover Please contact me directly if you have any questions.

Hello! It has been a long time since I wrote to this list. I wanted to remind everyone that the Gilmer County, GAGenWeb page may be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagilmer/. I also wanted to ask each of you to send me your genealogical data. I would like to make the Gilmer County, GAGenWeb page the clearinghouse for Gilmer County data and research. Richard
Mary Gertrude Chastain was b. 1883, the d/o Dr. Wilburn Monroe Chastain and Laura Quillian. Both parents were both deceased by 1888 and Mary Gertrude was found living with Laura's sister and her husband (Alexander and Narcissa Davis) in 1890. I believe that Mary Gertrude died around 1910-1913. Does anyone have a cemetery census they could check for me? I would like to know where she is buried and when she died. Mary Gertrude's maternal grandparents were Walter Terrell Colquitt Quillian and Sarah Louisey Roberts. Her paternal grandparents were the Rev. Joseph Pearson Chastain and his second wife Mary Hunnicutt. Thank you. Lynne in the beautiful northeast GA mountains
My last note for a while, I promise! My apologies again for those getting this note more than once due to cross-posting. While looking for the marriage record of Reese J. McClure and his first wife, I searched the Rabun County, Georgia marriage records on microfilm at the GA Archives. Here's what I noted: Source: Rabun County, Georgia Court of Ordinary Record of Marriages Book A Index 1820-1850, microfilmed Clayton GA 5 July 1963, & viewed on microfilm 15 July 2003 at GA Archives; microfilm found in drawer 15, box # 19. On the box: Rabun Co. GA Probate Court Marriages Vol A 1820 - 1850 Index; Vol B 1869-1884 Index; Vol B-D 1884-1895 Index; Vol E 1895-1921 Index Volume A Index Entries noted: McCluer JR p. 41 McClure Walter p. 73 McClure Joseph p. 102 Volume A Marriage Records Noted: p. 41 R J McClure to Miss Mary Parker marriage authorized 28 November 1834, wed same day by Ba[unreadable] Do[unreadable] JJG p. 73 Walter McClure to Mary Ann Jackson authorized 2nd November 1839, solemnized 6th November 1839 by Jeremiah York, JP; recorded 31st December 1839 by James Bleckley, CCo p. 102 Joseph McClure & Mary Patterson [I think her surname is Patterson; it was hard to read], marriage authorized 22 Feb 1844, wed same day by John Killingham JP [again, I think it said Killingham] I believe this RJ McClure is my 3rd great-grandfather, Reese J. McClure who is enumerated in Gilmer County, Georgia in 1840 and 1850 and in Fannin County, Georgia in 1860 and 1870. He died, per the information I have from the Petition for Years' Support and his tombstone at Mt. Morriah Baptist Church cemetery in Fannin County, Georgia, on or about 2 November 1875. I cannot find this Reese J. McClure in the 1830 census. He is said to be the son of John McClure and Lilean Bowen from the Old Pendleton District in South Carolina, but I have not proven that relationship. I'm trying to get back that far! I'd love to hear from anyone researching this line. I'm sorry I don't have any additional information on these other McClure marriages I found during my research. These McClures are not in my database at all. And thanks to any and all who put up with all my notes! :-) Judy
My apologies to all who see this cross-posted message. I'm sharing recent research finds in hopes of helping someone and maybe even finding a long-lost cousin (or two!). I'm posting to both Gilmer and Fannin County, Georgia lists because I believe at least one of my McClures went from Gilmer to Fannin County. While researching my McClure ancestors July 15th at the Georgia Archives' new, wonderful facility, I found the following: source: Gilmer County, Georgia Marriages & Mixed Records 1836-1837; 1835-1875 Marriaged Indexed; microfilm MFL 390, found in drawer 103, box 9 Book 1836-1837 No McClure (any variation) entries Book 1835-1852 No McClure entries (any spelling) Book 2 1852-1875 MClure Miles & Walker Sarah m lic p. 22 source: Gilmer County, Georgia Court of Ordinary Marriages Book 3 1877-1892 Indexed Book 4 1893-1908 Indexed, which includes some marriages 1857-1871 re-recorded in 1905 on pp 289-345; microfilm MFL 390-391, found in drawer 103, box 10 at GA Archives Book 3 Index Entries noted: McClure & Spivey p. 212 McClure & Anderson p. 489 (entry not found, possible I read page # wrong & it's 469 though I think I looked there, too) McClure & Jones p. 475 McClure & Burden p. 512 Book 3 Marriage Records Noted: p. 212 John M. McClure & CN Spivey marriage authorized 20 Dec 1883, wed 23 Dec 1883 by Joseph King, MG p. 475 John McCluer & Marinda Jones marriage authorized 20 Dec 1890, wed 21 Dec 1890 by Joseph Phillips, MG p. 512 DM McClure & Margaret Burden marriage authorized 3 January 1891, wed 5 Jan 1891 by JM Davis (could be JW Davis - hard to tell) Book 4 Index Entries Noted: McClure & Spiven p. 8 (or p. 3 - hard to tell) McClure & Reese p. 12 McClure & Nu[unreadable] p. 30 McClure & Reece p. 68 McClure & Pierce p. 95 McClure & Chastain p. 131 McClurd & Souther p. 146 (thought it might have been mistake & should be McClure) McClure & Chastain p. 166 McClure & Chastain p. 215 McClurd & Brown p. 228 (McClure?) McClure & Parker p. 324 (the one I was looking for!) I did not have time to take notes on each of these marriages. I did type notes from the McClure & Parker marriage record found on page 324 of Book 4. The keyboard for my PDA has an annoying habit of not typing all of the 'n' keys I press, so forgive me if the notes are missing a few 'n's or have a few too many!. Marriage Recd RJ McClure & Julia Ann Parker Gilmer County Ct of Ordinary Marriage Book 4 1893-1908, which includes some marriages re-recorded in 1905 from 1857-1871 on pp. 289-345 page 324 "State of Georgia, County of Gilmer To anny judge, justice of the peace, or minister of the Gospel: You are hereby authorized to join RJ McClure and Julia Ann Parker in the Holy State of Matrimoy, according to the Constitution and Laws of the State, and for so doing this shall be your License; and you are hereby required to return this license to me, with your certificate heron of the fact and date of the marriage. Given under my hand and seal, this 29 day of Jany, 1862 JP Chastain Ordinary State of Georgia County of Gilmer I certify that R.J. McClure and Julia Ann Parker were joied in matrimoy by me, this 2nd day of Feby 1862 W A Ellis M.G. Recorded August 9, 1905 T N Tabor, Ordinary" I believe that this RJ McClure who married Julia Ann Parker is the Reese J. McClure found in the 1850 census in Gilmer County, Georgia as follows: typed page 375, Reece J. McClure, age 44, listed as head of household, a farmer with real estate worth 600 (dollars?) , born S.C., listed with 11 other members of his household: Mary, 32; Mary A, 12; John ML, 11; Lovice, 10; Benjamin F, 9; Martha J, 8; Addaline, 6; Sarah J, 5; Robert N, 3; Eliza A, 2; and Nancy H, 1. I believe this Reese J. McClure in 1860 was in Fannin County, Georgia, as follows: typed p. 1023, Reese J. McClure, 53, M, farmer, real estate value 1000, personal estate value 500, born SC. Listed with Mary, 48, Martha, 19, Hefsey? 16, Sarah, 14, Robert, 13, and on p. 1024 Eliza, 11, Harriet, 10, Thomas, 9, and Reese B., 7. And in 1870, the Fannin County, Georgia census lists: printed p. 371, written p. 51, lines 25-28, McClure Reece, 64, M, W, Farmer, owned real estate valued at 700, personal property worth 400, born SC, eligible to vote. Listed with Julia (50), Eliza (20), and Bowen (16). I'll be glad to share my research on this family with interested researchers. I've got one more note to share from my search for Reese J. McClure's first marriage record in Rabun County, Georgia. Judy
A survey of Old Cartecay United Methodist Church Cemetery has been added to the Gilmer County American History and Genealogy project website at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/gilmer/ There have been several other pages updated and additions made also. Stop by and check out this old cemetery for your kinfolks. Paula
Idella, If you find no one to help solve your relation with these people then you must use land records, plot the land they owned/sold or gave to children upon their death, and check the wills. Alot of work but you can come up with an assumption that should put them together....also read the neighbors wills/land records. This type of search is always overlooked............Pat/NJ
