    1. New Cemeteries on-line for Gilmer PLEASANT GAP CEMETERY
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Thanks to Morris Smith who has shared several Cemeteries for you to benefit from. (Pleasant Gap and Pleasant Grove) Take a look, and remember that anything you share is going to help other researchers out, and might bring you in contact with another family researcher on your own line. We also welcome tombstone photos, as we realize that some of the older tombstones are deteriorating with each passing year. Also if you have family buried there or supposedly buried there, I'll be glad to add it as a "possible burial"....and attach your e-mail and name to it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gilmer.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gilmer/cemetery.html (Pass this along to your friends and to other lists that might benefit from it. Surname lists would really benefit from these cemeteries as so many members of the same surname are buried in them) This GAGILMER-L benefits as well. When you use the "forms" to post the materials, they go through this list so everyone can see them. http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ Since Gilmer was formed in 1832, there is lots of potential of data to share and get on line there. This list is always so helpful --- so pass along what lines you're looking for and also share something from your file, like a Bible Record, a Deed, a Will....or write up a brief BIO on your ancestor. 3. I am forwarding this message from another list - perhaps someone can help her find her Anna. -----Original Message----- From: Brenda G. Kent [mailto:wt211@victoria.tc.ca] Sent: Friday, September 03, 2004 1:16 AM To: CHEROKEE-SURNAMES-L@rootsweb.com Still looking for any info on the Watkins name. This person that is my great great grandmother was named Annie or Anna Watkins (sometimes spelled Wadkins) and one of her close female relatives married a Cherokee fellow. This couple had children. Anna herself was born in North Carolina moved to South Carolina and then ended up in Blue Ridge Georgia area. Her first husbands last name was Sisson...but her second husband (my great great grandfather) was a Bradford and he was 15 years or so her junior. They had children and then Annie died in Oklahoma as the family were moving westward. The story of the Cherokee person marrying into the family held to this day. Anyone know of any woman who was a Watkins...who married a Cherokee gentleman and then had children and were living near Georgia? I know this is quite the long shot...but I wish to know my Cherokee side. thanks Brenda Kent (great great granddaughter of Annie Watkins Bradford).

There is a Pleasant Gap Baptist Church cemetery located on Hwy 282. I checked this one separately - just in case the index missed someone. He is not there. 3. My records show John W. Thompson on the Gilmer Co. Ga. 1850 Census as a 7 y/o son of Samuel J. Thompson and Sarah Carter Thompson. Sub. 33 Page 351. The 1860 Census, Sub. 33 pg 19 show him (16) living with mother Sarah Thompson and 4 sisters and grandfather Henry Carter. He was a brother to my gr grandfather James J. Thompson. They were in the Confederate army and deserted went to Tenn. and joined the North. This John W. Thompson married Elizabeth Teague. On the 1870 Gilmer Co. Census he is 56 and living with wife Elizabeth and 7 daughters and 2 sons. I have a note that he died about 1902 and had his funeral at Clear Creek, Ga. Now there was another John Thompson living in Gilmer Co. Ga listed on the 1840 and 1850 census. 1850 Census Family # 1299, pg 877 & 78 John Thompson (no wife listed) has a son John age 9. I wonder is this could be the one is question. In the court records of Gilmer Co. is a John Thompson that died around the 1st of Sept 1886. The county had to bury him. In 1840 he had 9 slaves and was very prosperous. He probably lost everything in the Civil War or was wounded and unable to work. Samuel J. Thompson arrived in Gilmer Co. Ga in the early 1830's. He was a carpenter. Court records he was paid $11.00 on Sept. 3. 1840 for building the table and chairs for the first court house. He was on the grand jury and listed as a teacher once. We have not been able to determine the parents of Samuel J. Thompson and have heard that he had a brother. I have wondered if this John Thompson listed in the 1840 and 50 Census was his brother. Hope this clears some of the questions. I might add that my grandparents came from Gilmer Co. in 1887 to Celeste , Texas. He was Martin C. Compton and she was Sarah Ann Thompson. Will send more info later.
