They have done so with the exception of one - Joseph Pearson Chastain (1830-1918). Can anyone help with this request? Lynne in the beautiful northeast GA mountains

Surnames: JONES MCCLURE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Fc.2ADI/1192.1.1 Message Board Post: Linda, Have you looked at the 1860 and 1870 for Whitfield County? There is a Richard and Sara(h) McClure living VERY close to Thomas J. JONES and his wife, Matilda, and their children. This particular Richard/Sara had listed two sons, James and Lafayette, who are approximately ten years apart in age. Also living with them is granddaughter, Martha JONES. By 1880, I couldn't find the JONES family or the nearby McClure family in Georgia. I did find James and Lafayette McClure (with the same differences in age) in the Siloam Springs, AR, area on the 1880 with Richard, but no Sara. Siloam Springs isn't that far from Johnson County. Also, in discussions with other researchers I've run into the name of RichMOND McClure with wife Sara(h) which adds further confusion. Thomas and Matilda had sons named Andrew J. ("Jack"), Robert Lafayette ("Fate"), William T. ("Bill"), Rich (my ancestor -- who apparently went by Rich his whole life, not Richard or Richmond with no middle initial or name), and Joseph W.("Joe"). Those names appear frequently in the McClure line, but I keep wondering if they were just very common first names for the times or if they were family names given in honor of other relatives. Another thing that makes me wonder if the Richard/Sara of the 1860 and 1870 census living near Thomas and Matilda are her parents is the fact that Thomas and Matilda married in 1848 and their "oldest" son, Andrew J. "Jack" was born several years after their marriage. On the 1900 census Matilda states he had ten (10) children with eight (8) surviving. We know that daughter Rebecca had died and we can account for the other seven still living, so that leaves one unidentified child. On the 1870, the Martha appearing with Richard/Sara is older than Thomas and Matilda's Jack and was born after 1848. Richard/Sara were older by then and perhaps needed help around the house, and it would seem logical for an older granddaughter to move in and help out. Of course all this is mere speculation. Thanks for any help, insights, pointers, encouragement. Raye

I had written down, but not looked up, that RichMOND and Sarah MCCLURE lived near Thomas J. JONES and his wife, Matilda on the 1850 Gilmer Co. Census. I'm interested in comparing the older children of the 1850 to the children on the 1860 (Dalton P.O., Whitfield Co,, GA) and 1870 also in Dalton. Also, in my older notes I had written down two names: Margaret Matilda McClure and Martha Matilda McClure The wife of our Thomas J. JONES always used the name Matilda. Now I have confused myself. In the past two or three posts I've made on this Rootsweb message board, I've typed in Margaret as her first name, and now I'm thinking, no, it should have been Martha. I guess I seriously need to figure this one out asap. Any help would be appreciated. Raye

I have researched part of the side lines but not all. There was a John McClure born Mary 21, 1801 in NC died Sept 11, 1881 in Heurfano County, Colorado and his wife was Sarah some of their children were married and remained before he left I know he had a daughter Matilda but I have no date of birth or death for her. Andrew McClure born 1796 in North Carolina died Before Oct 4, 1865 in Union County, Georgia wife Lois Eller born 1792 in Georgia had a daughter Margaret born 1828. All those lines in those counties work into the families of the children of Andrew McClure who was born December 11, 1748 in Rowan County and died before December 20, 1815 in Haywood County, North Carolina. He had more children than I know for him but they moved from Rowan County NC into Burke and then Buncombe and Haywood as Haywood and Buncombe came from Burke County and Burke from Rowan so have always thought they were sitting still and the county lines and names were changing. Of the three sons I know Thomas McClure born 1770 in Rowan County and died after 1856 in Union County, Georgia is my direct line but I know that he had brothers and probably sisters, in those counties as well as himself. So your Margaret belongs in this family somewhere, part of them were in there early and part came after Andrew died. Hope this helps some. Linda

The couple later lived in Whitfield County through the Civil War where Thomas served in the GA 39th. They migrated west to Howell Township, Johnson County, AR, sometime around 1878. By 1878, Thomas and Matilda have moved to Howell Township, Johnson County, AR, with nine children, with one son, Andrew J. "Jack" JONES, being married at the time. Though the Jones surname is one that there are a million families in, could be somehow related. My Sophia Jones, b. 1802 in Ga. married Barnabus ARTHUR and moved to what was then Cherokee, but became Pickens Co. They lived in Long Swamp area which housed the origional Marble Co. It is still going strong today. This will be an exciting project. I have to go out of town for the night tomorrow night so give me until Tues, if you don't mind. Will still try to get over to Pickens today. Your John and Comfort lived in Talking Rock, Pickens Co., in the 1860 census. That is a bit north of Nelson. Probably when he sold out to the Marble Co., they moved to Talking Rock. It is a very small town and my FREEMAN ancestors are from there also. As my Freeman's had the two town general stores, I am! sure the Nelson's and Freeman's knew each other. Don't you just love genealogy?! You can email me directly at justasukoch@hotmail.com. Sukochi
